Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Oh thank god. I don’t know what happened in the original Spider-Man, but Parker’s face was some real strange uncanny valley stuff. The guy did not gel with the rest of the game.

The new one is definitely a different type of face but at least it doesn’t look creepy any more. Makes for an odd contrast with Miles though.

I didn't have a problem with his appearance while playing the game, but looking at it in isolation it does have a bit of the Tobey Maguires about it.

I'm sure they have their actual reasons for doing it, just feels weird and revisionist.

Imagine if they changed Mario so he looked like Bruno Tonioli for 3D All-Stars.

It has moved into the realm of the 'Not Tom Hollands' in the same way as The Avengers game suffers from the heroes looking like imposters in costumes. The useful thing about Spidey is that his mask fully covers his face so you don't have that concern in the action scenes.

I wonder if that's specifically the point. This version of him will be the one in the avengers game maybe.

that...that just looks...terrible!?! (face, im talking about the face)

But... the lighting in the PS4 version looks better? There’s a nice bloom effect on the TV screen between them that’s missing in the remaster, and a cutaway around 0:17 which shows literally nothing now because there’s no light any more. Also the character model looks worse, as if they’ve slapped photogrammetry of real persons face into an exaggerated cartoon world. The lack of ultra defined features always felt like a consistent aesthetic choice across everyone in the original.

That video felt like the unveil for the Arkham Asylum remaster, where they were proudly showed off their ‘new and improved’ models in a side-by-side trailer where they clearly came off worse every time. I appreciate this isn’t official marketing though.

It is official marketing, was in the post on insomnia's website announcing it.

They've definitely done something strange to the lighting, it's a lot stronger and flatter and less atmospheric. Ock looks like he has been de-aged too, but I think it's related to the lighting.

I played Spider-Man to fucking death. All the DLC, difficulties, multiple times so I can’t justify going back in AT COST for new shinies.

However, for someone coming to this new and as a launch title for the PS5 with Miles Morales that really is a spectacular package. I envy those that will be experiencing Spider-Man for the first time when they get the Ultimate Edition for their PS5 launch :(

And that’s more Tom Holland in the remaster than it is him in the films.

I hope the city is more interesting in Miles Morales. Apart from the same four crimes happening over and over again for most of the game it’s as shiny and empty as GTA. The Riddler trophies are a pain in the Arkham games but at lest they give you reason to stop and look around when moving around the city.

Am I right in thinking the MM 'game' is a more contained area and not the full city? I'm hoping I have made that up :(

I doubt it. It's presumably all of Manhattan, but dressed for winter.
