30 Day Game Music Challenge

Day 18 - Music in a game released the year you were born

Marble Madness - Beginner Race (Hal Canon and Brad Fuller)

Hurray for being born just in time for FM synthesis! The game still holds up surprisingly well, too. Still, a bit of a shame I wasn't born a few months later, as 1985 was the point where Sega really started to show what they could do with arcade sound hardware.

Poor @PC Master Race - I thought I had it tough, but at least I could choose something with a melody!

You think he's got it bad. I was convinced games barely had sound effects when I was born, but after much digging...

Here's the orignal (AND BEST) version of that - I used to play M.U.L.E. with my cousins whenever we met up:

I posted that version originally, but I think I prefer the NES one.

Day 19 - Cover of music by a different artist

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix - Army Girl

Cammy’s theme existed in the older game, but the tunes in the remaster were courtesy of the OCRemix community, so I’m counting it. Having a laid-back theme in a fast-paced fighter shouldn’t work as well as it does, but here we are. :)

Day 19 - Cover of Music by a Different Artist

Bayonetta

I wouldnt exactly say that I choose to kick back and listen to lounge jazz versions of ratpack songs of an evening, but this is one of those tunes that just instantly places me back at a particular time. I consider 2010 to be one of the very best years for video games and it all kicked off with this back in the January

Day 19 - cover of music by a different artist

That's right, it's a remake of a Martin Galway tune, by Matt Gray. Matt Gray has done loads of remade covers from other c64 greats and they're all awesome.

e.g.

I honestly couldn't decide which of these two to pick so ner.

I suppose this depends on how you define 'different artist', but I'm going to assume that 'a live band that happens to include the original composer' is fine, and go for this (with bonus points for the outfits):

Day 19 - Cover of music by a different artist

After Burner - After Burner (Hiroshi Kawaguchi) - performed by SST Band

For anyone who considers that the original artist shouldn't be in the performing band, though, an honourable mention to this:

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney − Trials and Tribulations - Godot - The Fragrance of Dark Coffee (Noriyuki Iwadare) - performed by Metamorphosis Jazz Band (from the Gyakuten Meets Jazz Soul album)

I'm guessing we all are interpreting this as covers outside of a game, which is much easier than the @Jolly approach of an in-game cover?

Day 19 - Cover of music by a different artist

I tried hard not to chose yet another Sonic track but this one is just a great example of something I wanted to happen for years - game music casually inserted into a normal performance setting. Lots of great studio covers on their YouTube (Nintendo stuff, Persona, BeatEmUps mainly) but there is something about a proper live performance that shows more clearly the talent and energy. Plus it's funky y'all!

Day 20 - Music From A Racing Game

Mario Kart 8

There's a real warm, deep, richness to the orchestra performed stuff put out by Nintendo these days but this is still the peak for me. Absolutely adore the trumpets.

Day 20 - Music from a racing game

I didn't want to repeat any game already posted in the thread so:

This is an incredible re-instumentation of the replay music utilising Model 1 sound chips - the original has been buried away on 32X hardware for years until the very recent M2 work. For comparison original is below:

I really almost posted something from light trax but today felt like it had to be a Sega tune. Some of the soundtrack feels a little melancholy so

Day 20 - Music from a racing game

Wipeout 2097 [PC/Sat] - Messij Xtnd (Cold Storage)

One of the trickiest ones to pick, considering the genre is packed with brilliant soundtracks. Decided to go back to my preferred version of a song which had me sticking my game CDs in my CD Player and spacing out in my room as a young teenager.

Day 20 - music from a racing game

Leftfield are one of my favourite bands ever, and so naturally it's some of my favourite music in a racing game.

God damn, I thought I'd be the only one to post a Wipeout track there for a moment but then Wiper wiped me out.

(Different games though)

@MW_Jimmy It may not have been on the PS1 soundtrack; I had the PC/Saturn versions of both games which had no licensed tracks, but extra Cold Storage tracks to make up the difference.

I've definitely heard that track in Wipeout at some point.
