They've seen sense, ie that they're leaving a lot of money on the table, and are canvassing for interest in another run of the CE.

If you're interested in it please sign up! Personally I think it's the best CE I've seen, well, ever really. And absolutely worth the money if you can stretch to it and love physical.

It's weird how long it's taking to add arcade mode to PS4, given that it's already out on the Switch and iOS versions. I've played a bit of arcade mode on iOS and it's great just from the perspective of having remixed levels with new enemy placement. I'm less keen on the 'play through an entire area in one setting aspect' - it'd be brilliant to have the option to have the alternate enemies in the main game - but it's fun nonetheless. I just want to play it on PS4, on a big screen, rather than on an iPad.

It's out for the Xbox version as well, so that's slightly bemusing. Maybe they worked on each version one after the other and the PS4 version was last on the list, or there's something going on with Sony's approval process?

I've hit a brick wall with the Shogun level on Bad Ass, as I keep on dying mid-way through the level to inane enemies, so argh. Playing Dishonored as a palette cleanser then aim to come back to finish off the last challenge and then it is done. :)

How does this compare with something like Blazing Chrome? The run 'n' gun genre passed me by when I was a kid so it's not something I've any nostalgia for, and I only lasted an hour on Blazing Chrome.l before getting fed up with it. Is this like that?

It's very different. Blazing Chrome tries to be as close as possible a spiritual successor to Contra, with all the frustrations that can go along with that - I also gave up on it eventually when I got stuck. It's very much designed for Contra fans and lovers of an old school challenge.

Huntdown is a very different kettle of fish, as it has modern gameplay sensibilities despite the nostalgic feel. The easy difficulty levels are also very generous with health, and checkpoints are prodigious.

I beat him, the mines were a problem. I love this.

Yeah, the mines are the worst bit of that whole fight, as the timing to dodge them seems far more strict than at any other point in the game. I did manage to beat the boss before the mines were thrown out, but only twice mind you. For me, it seems like there is a knack to getting maximum damage output from the grenade launcher and grenades, but it can be done.

Yeah done that now. I think I’m on the last boss and it seems impossible, but loads have felt like that up til now. It’s the ads I’m struggling with. It will fall soon.

Just completed this. Really enjoyed it. Played through on normal which I found tough enough tbh. Agree with what DC says in that some boss fights seem impossible but you gradually learn what to do in each bit and then satisfaction when you finally get them.

Final boss took me 60 goes haha. I never felt like I wanted to rage quit though. The art style, gameplay and humour is brilliant.

With all that talk about the collectors edition a bit back I thought I’d point out that the second run of collectors editions have gone up on Limited Run today.

The hype from back then sucked me in so I’ve just ordered it myself now. Costs just over £80 with taxes and postage.

For anyone who hasn't seen yet, the arcade mode has (finally!) been added to the PS4 version. I've only played the first couple of levels, but it seems tremendous so far - the rearranged enemies transform the levels, so it's like having a free expansion.

It’s available, in a seemingly limited capacity. I ordered one from eBay today - with the 10% code was around £22.

I mean I'm still waiting on the collectors edition that I bought from LRG back in August.

Big fan of this! I like how it mixes the old style run and gun with modern difficulty sensibilities, with pretty forgiving default settings but the scope to go much harder. I’m half way through and liking it more and more each time I play it.

It’s £3.99 on psn at the moment.

I’ve just finished the 4th boss of the final area, been absolutely loving this although it does sometimes make me painfully aware of what an old man I am -

Spoiler

finding the mogwai made me giggle like a small child and then immediately cringe at myself.

A lot of the references are very blatant and hard to argue (particularly loved seeing the duke’s car with the candelabra on the front in the background of one level). I may be wrong about this one as most of the bosses are based on cliched archetypes, but Marlo the Mutant gave me very strong Morris Day vibes and I wonder if that was intentional too. Purple Rain fits the era that all the other references come from, so it could be.

In the first dozen or so levels I felt like I had a handle on the game and it’s challenges, but recently it’s introduced a few chaotic elements that can be quite frustrating. I’m making sure to 100% each area before starting the next, and was enjoying the challenge - until I read the start of this thread (stopped at page 3) and learned about Badass mode only giving you 1 health bar.

Given that I am compelled to achieve everything a game challenges you to do I now feel like I’m already on that mode and it’s made it difficult to enjoy the boss fights as they are, as I am constantly thinking “how the hell am I going to survive this on badass mode?”

I have found the sentry turrets to be particularly useful with the sword sisters and yuudai, but even with that there are so many peripheral threats you have to be aware of and not let yourself be forced into dodging back into the path of the boss or a stream of bullets… it’s making me tense just thinking about it.

Badass mode is basically for people who want a bit of the challenge of those old NES 2D platformer adventures and suchlike, but once you've played through on the earlier difficulties it's actually a steady curve into doing the final levels from the last difficulty into the early levels of Badass.

The game becomes more like a puzzle, as you still get the checkpoints, so the one health point means you have to find the "correct" route rather than being able to showboat.

I think the game is most enjoyable on the 3 health bars difficulty overall. Badass requires learning boss patterns deeply and taking the correct secondary weapon along in some cases - I never finished it on that difficulty as it's a bit rich for me.

My only hope is exactly that, getting killed after one hit will force you to find the ‘safe’ path until you have it memorized, and then it’s just a case of surviving the bosses. Fine in theory, but the last 2 or 3 have not been beaten by predictable patterns as much as quick reactions/luck. I finished most of them with one health bar remaining. Still I should stop putting the cart before the horse and just enjoy the moment!

The penultimate boss (VR snake lady) was a pleasant return to readable patterns and a nice break from the recent hectic shit that’s been going down. I got the survivor award on my first try, which may also be the first time that’s happened.

However it’s also the first time I’ve failed to find all 3 stashes. After scouring the whole level and finding nothing (except another nice movie reference secret area) I noticed there is a safe in the background of the boss fight, so I made the effort of getting to the boss fight while holding the C4 as my secondary weapon. It didn’t damage the safe.

There is a door that can be damaged by the explosive in an earlier area but there’s nothing behind it. Not sure what else it could be, maybe the person holding the other case is a decoy and there are actually two people on the run with the other one further ahead, that’s all I can think of for now.

edit - nvm I found it lol
