I think the new handheld has potential- the current Evercade feels cheap and the screen poor. LCD as in lowest-common-denominator. Poor viewing angles, refresh tines and resolution.

New design looks nice (have been mulling over swapping out the screen in my OG Evercade for an IPS screen) but particularly excited about the IREM and Toaplan collections.

Is that an off the shelf mod or something you're putting together yourself?

 

BTW - Just ordered the EXP. Lot of money for what it is, but hoping it will be better than the existing handheld.

Pretty much - a replacement PSP screen is an exact fit for the Evercade version 1.

 

I've coughed up for the EXP too so will probably put it on the back burner for now.

Sold my Evercade because I was moving house and I just bought a Megadrive… damn they are trying to pull me back in. My criticism of the Evercade’s library is too much sub 16bit games which don’t really vibe with me. But a premium VS would tempt me.

They’re mostly the same titles as on the C64 Mini, so presumably selection is dictated by licenses already obtained.

you can sideload more on the c64 mini though - no one buys it for those games

Sure, but what i meant was, they wouldn't need to chase the licences on the games if they already own the licences for the games.

Darren Melbourne, who was behind the licensing on the C64DTV, moved over to Retro Games Limited and is in charge of licensing there. So it’s a mix of the Hewson and Epyx games they had the rights to already.

There are some great games on both and I guess licensing by publisher makes sense for those involved but it sure makes for a weird set of games.

Surprised it wasn’t a Hewson cart and a separate Epyx cart. Both beloved brands from that era.

Hewson rep for the C64 almost entirely built on the Braybrook stuff. The exceptions do not make the rule. Epyx were epic.

Mixed bag of games, so many classics not present. Should base it on Retro Gamers's Top 25 from the recent 80s special (kudos to @strider and the gang). Obviously, it's licensing that's in the way and not emulation restrictions. 

 

Nice to Bruce Lee on there, though.

that's the business model.

They definitely need better quality control on their releases. I don’t want 15+ games if only a couple are worth my time. I’d rather they release tighter carts with only a few quality games on it.

But then they wouldn't be able to charge so much - so they add crappy filler nobody wants and they charge more.

 

They release another cart with a couple of decent games and more filler and charge more.

 

It's a business model, that I have to admire - designed to maximise profits.

 

It's exactly what i would do, if i wanted to milk it for all its worth.

From a purely selfish reason I'd love for them to do some of the modern C64 games on the Evercade. They could stick mine on there so I'd eventually bite the bullet and buy one. There's loads of other good stuff as well though:

An 8-bit homebrew cart has the potential to be really good. And cheap to license.

Antstream seem to be licensing and releasing a load of 8-bit homebrew stuff recently. I guess all of the low-hanging fruit from that era had been snapped up by now.
