Just started playing this - never got round to picking it up at launch despite being a huge fan of the series.

Anyway fucking hell, the opening bit in the village is a bit intense, isn't it? It's like someone said 'the start of Resi 4 is the most intense opening in any resi' and the Resi 8 team went 'hold my beer'.

I loved 7, especially the first 2/3rds, so I hope this one doesn't shit the bed like that one did.

I doesn't shit the bed, it's great and very silly.

I liked the creepy Texas chainsaw massacre bits of 7, not so much the poorly implemented shooting gallery it turned into. This one started as a mental shooting ground and it feels a bit better to handle.

Lady D down. Was quite the spectacle. She didn’t have quite the same pant-shitting presence as Mr X or Nemesis stomping around after you. Most times I went into a room and she was in there it was more annoyance that I’d have to go the long way round to get to where I needed to be.

Also surprised she dies so soon in the game - obviously she became a bit of a poster girl for the game and went viral etc so to find out she’s basically the first boss was a bit of a shock!

Wandering around her castle I was mostly pining for a Resi 1 remake in this engine - it would be glorious!

I still think I prefer the first bit of 7 to this. 7 to this is like playing resident evil 1 and then going straight to 6 - the change in game style and gunplay is so dramatic compared to most of the original. The engine really doesn’t feel built to handle quick gunplay, either.

Anyway, keen to see where I’m heading next.

I've been on my third play through of this, on and off over the last couple of months. Turns into such a different game once you've got the infinite ammo magnum and grenade launcher!

Yes I've still to get to the bit in NG+ where I can pick up my new purchases...need to get on that and start Beasting those weapons.

I reckon this gets better with repeated playthroughs and kit, just like RE3 Remake

In a really unusual twist for me, as I'm always too late with this stuff, I managed to both snag this at £16 AND use reward points to buy £15 of credit for it - so it actually cost me £1.64.

I thank you @Quest! And I thank you MS for a rewards program that is actually really rather decent.

So let me get this right - you can play as Lady Dimitrescu in Mercenaries, and her weapons are a glass of wine, some lippy and a fierce right hook?

And how much money wuld you like for this, Capcom?  £100?  £200?  Just take what you need and hook it to my veins!

Played it last weekend for review. The DLC story is pretty good, the Mercenaries addon is locked behind finishing the main game's content (didn't click with me at launch), and I didn't really like third person view (despite being an old school Resi fan and RE4 being the best one) as the game just doesn't feel designed for it. The lack of suplexes etc really hurts it.

There’s no supplexes in REmakes 2 & 3. Surely the third person mode is going for a feel similar to those two rather than Resi 4?

It is but the actual gameplay of VIII is much more reminiscent of 4 in terms of the number of enemies etc. The difference between it and the REmakes is particularly apparent when played in third person.

Yeah, even though I was looking forward to the 3rd-person view, as I'm no fan of first-person RE, it feels tacked on like it is a mod from the fan community. I will still play the game in 3rd-person mode though, as that is how I reckon RE games should be.

Agree that the first person mode is a bit disappointing - I was really looking forward to it, but the animation and detail just isn't quite there as it is with 2 & 3 remakes, and it does indeed feel like a mod more than anything. The story dlc is actually pretty great though, and is a little slower and more tense than the the main game.

Absolutely cannot wait to play this in VR. It certainly wont have the impact that 7 had given we've all played through it already, but just being able to roam that castle in VR will be amazing.
