Resident Evil 8 (village?)

Finished this off the other night, just over 16hrs on the clock. Fantastic game but definitely takes a dip towards the end. The whole

Spoiler

Chris

section didn't really work at all for me.

Spoiler

Despite now being massively tooled up the game throws such a ridiculous amount of enemies at you, making it more like a Call of Duty clone, at one point I thought maybe I just needed to hit a checkpoint in order to stop them generating but eventually they stopped coming. Maybe it was supposed to be a cathartic release after the nip and tuck/evade ammo conservation mechanics of the whole rest of the game but it just ended up feeling like a complete chore to wade through, culminating in a couple of encounters with ridiculously over-powerful enemies in confined spaces, where the mechanics don't really work and you just get through it by having masses of ammo and health boosts.

Was all set for an immediate re-run using an infinite ammo Magnum but realised that I'd missed an upgrade for it, which is right towards the end of the game, so I'm basically going to have to do another complete run-through without it first (albeit with some significantly upgraded other weapons), not sure I have the stomach to do it again just yet. Will do eventually though. Having the infinite Magnum makes it into such a completely difference experience, almost playing a different game.

Yeah despite how I felt about the game at the end I do love going through an RE game with all my kit and unlocks again :D

The whole game was a hodgepodge for me. Some worked for me, quite a lot didn't. The actual village hub bit itself was the strongest aspect.

Spoiler

The part with the dolls looks like it would just slow down repeat playthroughs.

The Castle's... okay, but I'm totally over running from randomly appearing bosses.

Fish dude's just dumb.

Heisenberg section... hmm. I don't mind the gameplay there, but the factory's a dull arena to set it in and it lasts for way too long.

Chris' section's okay, but kinda dull too. You're overpowered for it, so there's basically no challenge and it's not spectacular enough to work as a setpiece.

I don't really have any urge to replay, despite the additions and weapons that get tacked on after completion. Finished it close to launch and never been back.

Agree tbh. Finished this back in November and only now revisiting it to try and work towards the all achievement completion. Just started with Mercenaries mode at the moment which is not really all that fun in first person mode.

Looking at my roadmap, I'm going to have to replay the story at least another two times to get everything done, probably more realistically for the sub 3 hours and knife only runs and as mentioned in your spoiler, some parts of the game are going to feel like a drag to get through again.

Hence getting on the E’s 🤔

The one thing I will say about the factory is it gave me strong RuptureFarms vibes, what with the conveyors and stuff like the image you posted.

In other news, Mercenaries mode is kinda brutal.

Took me about 3-4 hours last night to get an S rank on only the second stage, you need around 1.4M points to do so and if you fuck up and lose your combo too early you may as well start again. It feels good when you finish a level having strung everything together but I find the first person view and aiming still too janky to skillfully aim and not miss consistently.

Doing a second run is actually much faster than I originally thought. Once you take out all the time you stopped on a first run to look at things and be scared etc, it's kinda rapid. Just doing a run for all collectibles etc at the moment and nearly at the factory at around the 4 hour mark.

The Beneviento section that I was worried about dragging, took around 10 mins if that, so not too worried now about smashing through it another few times for all the cheevos. Mercenaries is a different beast altogether though, haven't revisited it since I tried the third stage a few times, it is not easy.

True true, RE3 was nuts fast but then that game was barebones anyway.

Slightly unsure how the knife only run is going to go though lol but will give it a go without any hints and stuff first and look up strats if/when I fail dismally.

I'm watching the excellent RKG guys play this and have come to realise something about a game I formerly absolutely loved.

Spoiler

They show Lycans on horses near the beginning and then... never again! That's it? They never come back! We never get to shoot them off of horses or be chased by them on our own horse or see if they have some kind of Lycan jockey horse racing day where some of the smaller Lycans ride horses and some of the Lycans wear fancy hats and place bets.

They show you Lycans on horseback at the beginning and then that's it and I am furious about this.

Or Lycan Jousting tournaments like in Game of Thrones. If you get beat you rip your horses head off.

Finally starting to get to grips with Mercenaries mode now after hours of practice. It's kinda growing on me a bit not gonna lie, as soon as you realise you don't need to be deadly accurate and that it relies more on taking the right route/weapon upgrades it feels a lot better.

Unlocked 6 of the 8 stages now and even managed a couple of SS ranks in there. Will keep plugging away at it and learning the ones I haven't done so well on, hopefully get them all S ranked in a week maximum.

Cracked Mercenaries last night and got my final S rank.

Weirdly, the later levels that set on VoS difficulty are actually way easier because you get the magnum so can just save that for the tough enemies. All done with that mode now anyway.

Looking at my roadmap, all I have left now (hopefully) is

- 1 NG+ combining a no knife run/less than 3 hours/ less than 10k lei spent and less than 3 healing items used.

- 1 NG+ run on VoS difficulty using the infinite magnum.

Should try and replay this at some point, to see if I will enjoy it more a second time through. I bought and finished it at release and was pretty underwhelmed by it. Maybe if it wasn’t called Resident Evil then I would have enjoyed it more for what it is but it just doesn’t feel like a resi game to me at all, the story was pretty weak and Ethan just is not an interesting character. I still dont like the change to first person either, and after playing the Resi 2 & 3 remakes it seems a bit strange that they went back to first person with this one.

I think it's an average entry tbh. When I first finished it back in Nov, I didn't want to touch it again to finish off the completion. Everything up to Beneviento is amazing horror/tense atmosphere etc. It made the same mistake as 7 in that the first half is great and after that everything goes downhill for me and the factory just kills it off tbh. If they'd have stuck the landing and kept it creepy survival horror throughout, I'd have rated it higher for sure.

Finished my knife only run, ended up at around the 2h 30 mark, nothing difficult tbh, on casual your health regens so it's really hard to actually die.

Just Village of Shadows difficulty left now and I'll be done. Will have the infinite ammo magnum so not seeing any problems tbh apart from boss at end of factory.

Might be done with the completion by tomorrow at this rate.

Just started playing this - never got round to picking it up at launch despite being a huge fan of the series.

Anyway fucking hell, the opening bit in the village is a bit intense, isn't it? It's like someone said 'the start of Resi 4 is the most intense opening in any resi' and the Resi 8 team went 'hold my beer'.

I loved 7, especially the first 2/3rds, so I hope this one doesn't shit the bed like that one did.

I gotta say, everyone having an american accent in this village is really off-putting

Could be worse, didn't they make all the Spaniards in RE4 Mexican because the English voice team didn't appreciate that there was a difference?
