 What you’re describing is utter bliss. I love the comfy slipper aspect of playing a good Resident Evil.

Yep. And saying 6 is better than 8 is like saying you'd prefer if someone curled off a big shite in your comfy slipper. By the time you've played all of the campaigns you'll have enjoyed squelching it up through your toes as it drys and hardens, the aroma filling the room of wrongness that you occupy.

You've been here too long to be a Spainkiller alt but I think the mods should check just in case.

I've long maintained my enjoyment of Resi6.  I will continue to argue that if it had all new characters and was called anything other than 'Resident something' it would have been a well received game. At least on the PS4 where it runs at 60fps.  It's not the best Resident Evil but its a lot of fun.

I just finished this and enjoyed it but it felt a bit Uncharted 3 where they designed the set pieces first and then tied it all together. Everything felt so separate. The individual characters/villains were good but it really blew its load on the first castle, I really enjoyed that part. It then became a bit derivative and whilst the 2nd and 3rd parts were good first time round, they are really one shots that don’t hold up much to repeat play throughs. I also thought the graphical quality varied wildly, as if the design had been done by different teams, the castle was again great and the characters within lifelike. But Some such as Ethan’s wife were poorly drawn and looked PS3 era.

I enjoyed it overall but all it did was make me want to play RE4 again

The first time my mate and I played RE1 back in 1996 we came to the bit where Barry and Jill (I think) were talking in the main area of the mansion when they hear the off screen gun shot. My mate said "He's shot his load!" and we pissed ourselves laughing. Funny the things you remember and cherish isn't it? Happy days...

The visuals were wildly inconsistent. Those big branch things at the end moving around at 30fps was just weird, and it definitely felt like something primarily designed for PS4 (I mean, it was basically Revelations 3 before they realised they could polish the fucker up and ship it as a full price game).

The ray-traced reflections were utterly hilarious, too. That water. Good god.

I didn't hate my time with it, but a faster-paced game with RE7's controls and movement speed was not the way to go at all. The Stronghold area was pure torture simply because it felt shit to fight about ten werewolves.

Fuck werewolves.

This game is a bit of an oddity.
One minute I’m looking at gorgeous fabrics and textures with genuinely incredible ray tracing lighting effects, then there’s a branch of a bush sticking out of the snow that is clipping horrendously and looks like it’s made out of 2 polygons.

The characters, story and mood follow a similar pattern - great then all of a sudden very bad.
Overall though, I’m really enjoying it. Whatever it’s technical or critical merits it’s still a whole lot of fun videogame.

I really enjoyed this, but 7 was just revolutionary in VR -so I can't for the life of me understand they they kept this first person and didn't include a VR mode, it would have been both terrifying (well some of it) and incredible.

To be honest if they aren't going to include VR, I'd rather they went back to 3rd person for Resi games.

That's pretty much how I felt. I found it tremendously uneven, with moments of genius wedged between total shite.

I've finished it recently and completely agree, I loved the first act and it's all over the place after that. The final area is especially terrible...

Spoiler

Miserable Borg wankery

Finally started playing this over the last few evenings, not played through 7 but am very familiar with 4. Enjoying the village pastiche (though I think it has enough different elements/twists to give it its own identity from 4) but missing the 3rd person laser sight shooting, the change to 1st person has taken quite a bit to get used to, especially with the oppressive and almost claustrophobically tight FOV (on X1X so no option to change, though have switched aim acceleration off).

Playing on standard difficulty is enough for me these days, really enjoying it so far. Great atmosphere with a lot of tension early on, with your crappy peashooter and limited ammo. Now I'm out of the castle it feels like the tide is starting to turn in my favour but now it's throwing some stronger/armoured bad dudes at me.

Really like the fact that once you've cleared an area (in the castle at least) of standard enemies it stays clear, and as you get more familiar with the routes/shortcuts you can explore more freely without being too concerned how you're going to avoid the lady of the house.

Taken more or less dead on 4hrs to complete the castle section and get back to the village, no idea how that compares to others but I do tend to take my time in games like this, tip-toeing around and exploring every nook and cranny, and then running screaming back to a typewriter at every opportunity.

I took about the same. The next bit you’ll do is good, in fact the rest of the game is good really. Just big, daft Resi fun. I think I’m nearing the end and while it’s not exactly a classic I’m really getting a kick out of it.

Rectify this immediately.  It's sublime.  It's probably the best Resident Evil.

But it's terrifying. TERRIFYING.

Speaking of which, man that bloody House Beneviento, JESUS. Made it through that section now, but *whistles*. Incredible atmosphere. Have now been through that and back to the central altar section, mopping up some other areas on the way, and then just done Moreau. 🤮 Just over 10hrs on the clock now.

Speaking as someone who still utterly adores the PS1 trilogy, I have to respond to this. You are, I'm afraid, quite wrong in my opinion. It's top 5 though.

Speaking of VR, I'm convinced that as soon as PSVR2 drops, this will get a VR patch. It'll be utterly glorious.

Well it turns out you’re both wrong! ;)

The best Resident Evil is Resident Evil 4 VR. Fact!

*shudder*

Got another couple of hours through last night, and after starting to cruise had a proper battle with a giant in a mill on the way to the stronghold, then battered my way into the Stronghold itself, got bashed around and just about made it through that first massive encounter, then got my arse handed to me by the big bearded thing. Flipping heck.

How have I only just heard about this??! I fucking loved 7. My partner hasn’t seen it so I’m gonna play that through again with him. But I’m going into 8 alone. Fucking love these games.

I’m on my 2nd play through. It’s utter bliss to me. I’m gonna start my 3rd straight after.

It’s brilliant.

You can tell where the dev team wishes they had more time, but it’s still head and shoulders above so much else that’s out there.  Still my GOTY for now.

It's up there fighting for my GOTY with Forza.

Although Hades hit Xbox this year and blows everything away.
