Having just watched the trailer...

The behind the scenes made me really want it, the trailer made me want to ignore it!

Crofty is painful at the best of times, generic repeating Crofty will be even more unbearable.

It's bad enough hearing "It's lights out and away we go" for each actual race, never mind again and again in a video game.

And then there was "oh no it's a spin" which fits firmly into the real life voice commentary in games isn't good enough to synthesise each permutation of event and driver without sounding detached, and therefore just takes away from the experience.

I think for me it's not just that the execution seems very bad, it's the wrong direction for a management game to take. From the F1 Manager 2022 wikipedia entry:

Quote

The game will feature realistic camera angles based on those used for the real races.

It will feature a true to life broadcast presentation with realistic TV graphics.

It's frustrating enough that, just to consume it as a fan, I have to experience Sky's air-brushed, corporate, white old man interpretation of F1 with its coordinated lines of light blue shirts and beige trousers, with the occasional beige shirt and light blue trousers if they're feeling daring! But shouldn't a management game actively be seeking not to deliver the same experience that you get as a fan? Shouldn't it place you inside the sport and strive to offer something different to how it's presented by TV companies? Surely you shouldn't be seeing the "broadcast presentation" as a team manager, how much David Croft commentary do you think Toto actually experiences on a given weekend (lucky sod)? The media should be something that you have to try and navigate and balance, or possibly try and manipulate, rather than something that you consume in the same way that fans do.

I agree completely, but...

...is it a management game, a simulation, or is it an armchair management game?

Are they trying to put you in charge of a (simulated) real F1 team, or are they trying to tap into the market of F1 viewers who shout at the TV about Ferrari's daft or late strategy calls, and who shout at Crofty when Brundle doesn't correct him and he's said Checo four times when we all know it's Max.

I expect the reality is it's somewhere in the middle.  I'd also expect there is *someone* within each team paid to watch the TV broadcast (and live timing, and likely with access to weather radars and others for confirmation purposes) in case seeing things framed in a different light gives an advantage, and if there isn't, judging by the number of times I've managed to armchair strategy call better than the team manage there probably should be ;)

Yes good points @Corranga . I suppose the idea in my head of an F1 / motorsport management game probably wouldn't be very financially successful. As Playsport (from what I understand) realised with the MM PC version. Which might well be why Frontier have gone in this direction.

Still, I needed to have a rant :)

This all looks pretty neat, but not being able to create your own team is a bit of a missed opportunity IMO. I'm also wondering how much of the commercial side of things you can get involved with, and how much the 'world' you have in your save game evolves.

Now, obviously they're going to be somewhat handicapped by licensing constraints here. It took Codies the best part of a decade to convince FOM that driver transfers should be allowed in the official F1 games, so I am imagining that'll be in. But if season-in, season-out you are racing the same calendar with the exact same-looking cars under the exact same rules then it might get a bit old.

Am hoping they drop a bit more info on that kinda stuff before launch. It does look really solid overall, so am likely going to pick it up anyway.

Not a good start a couple of races in. It looks good and everything, but when your driver gets alongside and then just slams on the breaks half way down the straight because the AI cant figure out what it's meant to do, regulating in the car behind getting a double overtake... Well I just had to turn it off.

Just done my first race weekend (as Williams).

Crofty can fuck off.

Cars seem to spin out in a really weird way, like the game has just rolled a dice and then oo they're off.

Crofty fucks off with a volume slider, thankfully.

Imagine being a Team Principal on the pit wall and having the commentary blasting from the world feed. Jesus Christ.

Am I missing something? The set up options seem to be rather limited (though not as limited as F1 22), you can change wing angles, roll bar distribution, camber and toe out but can't change brake pressure, tyre pressure, roll bar stiffness, suspension stiffness or ride height?

Do different tyre compounds (S/M/H) have an impact on pace? Seems to have been a bug but was it fixed in day 1 patch? Close to buying this but tyres are pretty fundamental to strategy and therefore the game.

Feels like it's still bugged. I'll keep an eye on it. There's definitely a difference between tyre degradation and the drop-off in pace, and I've been going Medium-Hard 1-stop strategies in races with good results.

Can anyone tell me what UI options there are? Dark UI, font scaling, etc?

On console, there's only font colour options, nothing on dark UI or scaling.

Yup, the five sliders are the only set-up options that I can see. It's like a slightly more complicated version of Motorsport Manager.
