Why, do you think there might be current events that might make people not have much appetite for a series about society collapsing after virulent disease outbreak?

Sales of books and movies about outbreaks are actually increasing right now.

Makes so much more sense as a series than a film. In the game, the quiet moments were at least as important as the action beats. Even if you went for a three hour epic, you wouldn't be able to spend enough time with the characters to tell the story properly.

I'm getting deliriously ahead of myself, but I'm wondering if maybe we'll have a subsequent series effectively set in between the first and second games? Because you can't really just wait for all the actors to age five years before you create a follow up.

I wonder how the timeliney stuff will work. Obviously there are events before the "present" which will be important to show, to give context to both Joel and Ellie's baggage.

Defo Kaitlyn Dever for Ellie.

Less sure on Joel.

Some say Nikolaj Double-Barrel from GoT but I don’t feel it.

Hugh Jackman would have been perfect ten years ago (ditto Ellen Page for Ellie) but he’s a cliche pastiche choice at this point.

John Bernthal would make a decent Joel.

An actor I'd like to see play the part, but will never get it as he's not a big enough name, is Connor Trinneer. Looks and sounds the part (right accent), and at 50 is pretty much exactly the right age.

I would prefer it if they cast a child instead of an adult pretending to be a child.

Your concern is noted and known already. She did play a late-but-somewhat-younger-looking teen in Unbelievable of course.

Who might would you suggest as an alternative?

No?

Weird place this. Seen it in other threads; people just dumping on suggestions with nothing better to say. I blame Thatcher!

People are saying Kaitlin Dever all over the place, and that's a good idea in some respects (excellent actress!) but she's 23. Ellie's 14.

Having thought about it for at least 40 seconds, my first choice for Ellie would be Bella Ramsey. She's the right age, she's an excellent actress, she's got some grit and she's worked with countless veterans already on Game Of Thrones. Do an American accent, don't do an American accent, I don't mind.

For Joel, Jon Bernthal (as mentioned already) would be good. He can do that mix of wounded and deadly in his sleep.

But here's another suggestion: Wes Chatham. Best known for Amos, the breakout character of The Expanse. On the page he's a pretty empty character, on screen he's this incredible mix of vulnerability and deadliness. Due to some past trauma the character struggles to understand right from wrong and typically defaults to violence as a survival mechanism, so he relies heavily on other characters to help him make sense of the world. He's incredibly watchable. Most of the clips I can find are pretty spoilery, but here's one where he barely talks and you can hopefully see what where I'm coming from. He's about the right age to play as older or younger, which works well for flashbacks.

@Moz Wes Chatham is a great shout, but he's too young for the part, or at least, he's too baby-faced for it, even with the beard.

Yep, too conventionally handsome, and I also don't think he could really shake off that vague sense that's he's ex-military. Which wouldn't really work for Joel at all.

Cast two people I've never heard of please. For some of the supporting cast they could actually just recast the voice actors I think? I'm thinking Tess, Bill and Marlene particularly. If they cast Merle Dandridge we can get another improvised musical outtake hopefully.

He doesn't look like Joel at all, but that's not hugely important. He's 41 (I know!) so a bit older than Joel at the start of TLOU before it jumps forward to his late 40s where he meets Ellie, who is 14.
