How does fuel saving work now that they can’t change engine modes? Does the driver just have to remember to short shift?

They only banned engine modes right? Presumably they have modes that simply change the shift lights down 400rpm or whatever, or realistically, probably custom them per gear for optimum performance / fuel balance etc.

It’s the only way I can think of doing it, along with the beeps they apparently get in their earpiece, unless that also counts as changing engine mode.

Salary cap - the wrong solution to the wrong problem.

If it’s per driver you just end up with more rent-an-idiots to potter around in 12th place.

If it’s per team it still won’t drive costs down or make back-marker teams suddenly more competitive.

And the fact the drivers are already rubbishing the 2021 tyres* shows F1 isn’t changing course soon.

*Yes, I realise next year’s cars are a different spec with lower downforce. But too much change in the regs at once just makes it likely we end up with one successful team that works round them then several competitive ones.
