Oh yes, very much so. I'm really, really enjoying it. Part way through they introduce a whole new game mechanic, whereby you manage and send your army out to fight and it's really crap and until you get the hang of it slows the game to an absolute crawl, killing any momentum it had, but once you get your head around it, it really picks up again!

Knowing how Pathfinder works definitely helps, mind. It's like D&D but exponentially more complicated for no real reason

There's a thread on it in Discussion:

Thanks. I’ve never played Pathfinder but I understand it (well 1e) is 3.5bD&D on steroids and I played lots of 3.x.

Yeah that's fairly accurate. You can very much stack the deck in your favour as bonuses stack on bonuses, when you crit you double everything not just the damage dice, you can end up with ridiculous damage, there's a lot of maths and the class building is far more flexible than 5e. It doesn't have advantage and disadvantage, you have to 'confirm' crits when you get them (i.e. roll again and beat the AC a second time to crit, otherwise it's just a normal hit) and the way death works is very punitive (my alchemist was killed in our group when hit by a giant because of how pathfinder death works, but wouldn't have died if it was 5e which was quite frustrating at the time). I'd say 5e is far more user friendly and streamlined than Pathfinder, but there are pros and cons to each.

I think understanding 5e will help you be more at home in Wrath of the Righteous, if you choose to play it. Understanding 3.5 will likely help more and knowing Pathfinder even better. I’ve only a rudimentary understanding of pathfinder (played it once a month for over a year, have the rule books on the shelf behind me) but I understand everything the game asks of me, just about!

  • 2 weeks later...

I wont be able to make it tonight I don’t think - I tested positive for Covid on Friday and Im not sure my voice is upto 2.5 hrs of DMing let alone the brain fog 😄

(I’m not too bad but a bit tired etc which won’t make the session very good)

Oh, no, I hope you feel better soon. I have had it since Monday/Tuesday and the lethargy and brain fog are horrible. Get well soon.

Just tired mainly , was a bit anxious to start but now just fatigue.

Bizarrely my son hasn’t managed to catch it which is very odd.

yeah, I felt a bit flu-ey but had had worse flu. The lethargy I found both debilitating and boring!

Hope you feel better soon.

I’ve had my second negative test now and tomorrow is my day 10 so soon to be released from isolation.

As for your son not getting it we experienced something similar. My youngest (7) tested positive on the Saturday night, we all tested on Sunday and my middle child (11) was positive everyone else negative. I didn’t feel unwell until Tuesday which was when I first tested positive. My wife and daughter (13) were negative throughout on both LFTs and PCRs and we didn’t really isolate from them.

yes thankyou for that it was satisfying. You never know when you are dropping too many hints (so its obvious) or too few( and then it is "oh dear you didn't spot and never even suspected") the perfect mix is juuuuust enough suspicion but then letting it go :D

Oh no, what did I miss?

Hexx spent a long time shopping.

He went to see Elliander. Had a funny feeling about him but chose not to pursue it.

Turns out Elliander had been captured and replaced by a tiger tabaxi and made off with the Baal spawn.

We gave chase, tried to fight, but it plane shifted away, so now we’re going to the plane of fire!

Oh, and you died.

(ok these are my rough notes I have bolded the important bits as its a long read otherwise)

Eliander and Neristra explained the plan for moving the bhaalspawn. Eliander was to take the boy dressed as a guard as well as two other guards on a "patrol" to the north but in fact it was to hand the boy over to the Harpers. You all agreed with this and further agreed to be a distraction by heading east in case anyone was watching and might follow you instead of a random guard patrol.

Eliander then left to return to the barracks and prepare for the morning they were to leave mid morning. You spoke to Neristra at some length regarding this plan and future plans. Two main strands developed - exploring the Underdark to try and find the illithid and defeat him or going to plane of fire to release the chains. There was much conversation around the Underdark and what it was, what languages spoken, are all creatures hostile etc. The explanation from Neristra was that is was similar to the overworld, not all duergar are hostile many are miners there are tribes of gnomes called Svirfneblin who live peacefully there etc. It was also explained there are huge cities in the underdark and great rivers and even an underground sea. Archibald indicated that as he was being scried on he could do with an amulet of protection from such things - Neristra indicated she didn't have one but would ask and in meantime if you ask Xendros then the Harpers would be willing to pay for it.

Neristra paid Walks as he hadn't been paid in a while and the rest of you asked about payment for helping harpers etc. SHe said she could look into a retainer to begin with and there may be things that you could do for the harpers as well as the illithid issue. However if the amulet is expensive then that will swallow up the retainer fee.

Off to Xendros. She seemed in much better spirits, looking very dapper and well groomed it seems she had managed to quell her recent troubles. SHe indicated that she had persuaded her superiors that this situation could be an exchange of information and the Bhaalists could gain from it. You aren't sure exactly what she has said  but it seems she still has use to the Bhaalists and the betrayal that she undertook is not as fatal as she thought.

You asked her how are bhaalspawn/potentials detected. She wasn't sure exactly but said that unholy bhaalist priests had ways of detecting their lord's power wherever it might be concentrated in the land or people and they used that to narrow it down.

There was talk of how to neutralise a potential bhaalspawn i.e. remove whatever it was that made him bhaalspawn. She was only aware of one method, death followed by complete immolation.

You asked if this detectable quality could be hidden and she replied saying that surely you already know this as you have him hidden magically. At this point she asked for information in return as to the location of the bhaalspawn and Caliban carefully indicated that he was safe in a location that shielded him. She asked for a little more to gi e her superiors where she could not be accused of lying and Caliban said on an island. SHe said this was enough, she doesn't want to rock the boat as she is a businesswoman and she isnt as devout as many, she suffered a poor background it seems, treated as a "demon" for her race and ended up falling in with bhaalists it seems. So she wants some plausible deniability when she hands over info.

Archibald asked about an amulet and she said she had one and only one and it was hers, it was round her neck. She would only let it go for 6000gp - she knows this is double the normal prices but she needs one and will need to pay a finders fee to obtain another quickly.

He also asked about other goods - LIST INCOMING

Potion of climbing - 150gp

Potion of Fire Resistance - 175gp

Potion of Cold Resistance - 175gp

Potrion of Gaseous form - 750gp

Potion of Frost Giant Strength - 150gp (bought by Archibald)

Oil of Slipperiness - 200gp

Cloak of elvenkind - 400gp (bought by Sardan)

Flame Tongue long sword - 5200gp

Mace of disruption - 6100gp

(If anyone who was missing wishes to purchase any of the items let me know)

You go to tavern and the drinks and meal are on Walks with his new found wages riches.

In morning back to neristra who has not been able to source an amulet and so gives 6000 to Archibald, she gives a further 150gp each to the party as a retainer it would have been far more but 6000 went to the amulet. Archibald then tried to negotiate Xendros down but failed and paid for the Amulet.

While the party prepared at the tavern and gained a new party member, a kitchen hand called Brent to travel with you as a decoy? Archibald went to the barracks to check in with Eliander on the plan and say that maybe it woul dbe a good idea to send more fish to Sahuagin and setup trade show good willing. Eliander, in his offices seemed a little stumbly over the idea but agreed readily and indicated that the party were a credit to saltmarsh and he was sure their advice was sound. Archibald almost insight checked him but didn't.

THe party head east with their decoy, Brent. 30 mins out you all heard hooves on the ground thrumming close and then a lord's alliance guard arrived indicating that Eliander had left heading north but also been found at his residence mortally wounded close to death. Obviously The Eliander heading north was an imposter. The party raced back to town (dropping off brent). A quick discussion with neristra on speed indicated that horses would be faster than the skyship. Walks and Archibald went on the skyship with Neristra and her crew (Sledar a human, Nelal a female dragonborn without a tail and a goblin called Drizter).

The party split in two race north with the 5 on horseback in the lead. From above Walks can see a wooded copse by the side of the road which the party seems to move into. The reason for this is they have spotted tracks heading over to the side of road. As they arrived they can catch sight of figures in the trees one of which has orange fur - also the sound of a blade. Then the sound of a spell being cast and a murmered voice. the party caught up with the figures and found a tiger standing on hind legs, exquisitely dressed in blue and red velvet, he snarls at you as you arrive. The boy stands next to him and the tigers arms is around him with the boy not struggling. You all immediately attacked with attempted grapples and Caliban slashes wildy at the Tiger doing a fair amount of damage. The Tiger turns to the boy and tells him not to worry and come with him and then he casts another spell, one you sall recognise the illithid use (plane shift). Glen immediately attempts counterspell but it fails (we did roll Sardan's portents but they were too low). The Tiger and the boy planeshift away leaving you standing in the copse with two dead guards and the ship approaching over head.

And that is where we ended that session!

(Neristra will tell you it is a Rahkshasa, a fiend from the nine hells who often do work as assassins and other sneaky stuff, the assumption is that it was hired by the Illithid).
