For 100% clarity on the fill in backstory from Brom

 

1) Bayleaf and the cultist took the ship and subdued Brom and Lief.

 

2) Bayleaf (via speak with Dead) said that Brom and Lief were dropped off at an island but he did not know which one as he was kept below decks.

 

So the Duergar/Illithid force dropped off Brom and Lief not Bayleaf. You don't know how the Duergar took the ship from Bayleaf but Brom has confirmed that it was the Duergar that dropped them off.
