Rllmuk's Favourite Albums of the Decade (2010-19) - Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

As discussed in the Best of 2019 thread, here's a new one for talking about your favourite albums of the last decade.

In the end of year poll, we allow reissues - do you think this is equally appropriate for a decade poll? (I'm not sure if it is). I'll update the rule in the list thread ASAP once there seems to be a consensus.

If you'd like to remind yourself of how you've voted over the last ten years, or to see which albums featured in the end-of-year polls, you can simply search using the albumsoftheyear tag.

Once you've decided on a list, please post it in the list thread, which you can find here!

.

The poll will close at the end of Sunday 16 February.

Yeah, I'm going to struggle with this a lot. I would say this is going to lead to a far less diverse selection and maybe even some records with more than a couple of votes each.

Excellent. Time to get thinking.

I've already had a trawl through the polls for each year and gone through my music library. Picking my top 2 choices from each year's list thread would be completely unrepresentative - it's really surprising how some years feature much more than others - I hardly listen to some of my number 1 choices at all any more, some of my lesser choices I like a lot more, and there is a great deal of music that I really like which I never voted for at all, and ended up listening to for the first time after the results of the previous year's poll.

Damnit @Tetchy, I have the Interstellar OST in my list and was just about to post it, and now it looks like I'm copying you.  Bastard.

Could you both agree on the same title to help avoid dupes?

I am finding that some albums I thought would be on my list are actually older than I thought. 2010-2019 is so far shaping up to contain some good albums, but lacking anything that really defined moments in my life like the previous two decades.

Oh god, yes. I‘d estimate that half of the records I had in my head for this list were from the wrong decade. Some a good 5 or 6 years out. I think that just means I’m really old.

Jon Hopkins - Immunity

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

James Holden - The Inheritors

A Tribe Called Quest - We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service

The Avalanches - Wildflower

Daniel Avery - Drone Logic

Andy Cato - Times and Places

The Roots - How I Got Over

Au Revoir Simone - Move In Spectrums

Beck - Colors

Bicep - Bicep

Lazy Habits - Lazy Habits.

And then I need to think. Maybe Grimes? I really liked First Serve. Maybe Psychodrama? Maybe one of Poppy Ackroyd's albums, or Hidden Orchestra. Maybe Robyn's Honey or the two most recent Chemical Brothers albums.

Oooh, good shout.  That was close to being on my list, and may still make its way on there before the deadline.  The first few tracks are spectacular, but I do think it weakens slightly towards the end.  Cracking album.

I don’t even know where to begin.

What I meant by this was how to wade through ten years of music and essentially choose two from each year. And then rank them!

I have some ideas. I think top 10 might actually be easier so what I may do is pick my top album of each year. And then ten wildcards from across the decade to make my top 20.

This is going to be very difficult. I haven’t done the favourite albums of the year for the past two years because I just haven’t been listening to much new music. I seem to have got stuck in a rut of listening to the same stuff all the time, however theres so much from the last ten years I don’t know how I’m going to narrow it down. I just know I’ll forget something...

Hah! Well, I might have to amend my list now too because I’ve just noticed from your list the TLOU soundtrack which I totally forgot to put in. I listened to that constantly for about 2 years after completing that game 4 times. How I forgot it I don’t know!

I always have a habit of forming an attachment with the wrong album from the right artist.

Kanye’s The Life of Pablo, Grimes’ Art Angels, Ghost’s Prequelle and Chvrches’ Every Open Eye would be my choices from them. I’m just not wired right for these polls.

I narrowed a shortlist of 36 down to 20 fairly easily but ordering them was more difficult. Then I remembered some others and actually started listening to them all and now I have to reconsider. Turns out some albums have a couple of classic tracks on but are otherwise average. I’ll post my new, longer, shortlist when I’m at the computer next.
