What games did you complete? 2020 Edition

So summing up this year. I completed 72 games this year. Lots more time due to working from home and...um...losing my job (although getting another job with less responsibilities than my previous one.) Last year Death Stranding was my game of the year. Little was I to know that a game set in a fictional universe where people are isolated from each other and depend on deliveries would become my reality. Well sort of. I didn't spend lockdown making grenades out of my poop and urine.

I was looking to complete more but I became obsessed with rouge likes with Hades, R.A.D and Children of Morta all taking up dozens of hours of my time. All are recommended although pick of the bunch is Hades.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake should have been a complete disaster but ended up being a firm favourite in this household with my partner completing it multiple times. There was more than enough for myself as a long time fan and I loved seeing someone else come to the universe new and fall in love with it. And while it might not pan out in the follow-ups I think the direction that they chose was incredibly brave. Animal Crossing though not completed by myself obviously took up loads of time as well as a brilliant escape and way to catch up with friends isolated in other places. What counts as complete? Who knows, Nintendo just keep adding more and more content.

Game of the year not released in 2020? That would be The Outer Wilds a game that to me bought back the wonder I experienced playing Mercenary (C64) and Damocles (Amiga). It's an astounding work although some of the physics and tightish time limits might act as a gatekeeper. It's one game everyone should experience. This seemed to push me to play a lot of hard sci-fi space games with TacomaDeliver Us the Moon and The Turing Test all being marked off my backlog. All great games,

Surprise game of the year for me was Astrologaster a game about a "doctor" using star charts to treat patients around the time of the plaque in the 1600's. Made me laugh quite a few times and I was completely amazed to find out that Simon Forman wasn't a fictional character but existed leaving behind many diaries.

I played and completed all the modern Wolfenstein games and enjoyed all of them, something about fighting Nazis this year felt good. Retro remake of the year was Missile Command:Recharged which changed the raster look for glowing vectors and was all the better for it.

Biggest disappointment of the year and a game I abandoned before finishing chapter 1, Life is Strange 2. I loved the first game and loved most of Before the Storm but something about Life is Strange 2 just kind of threw me off. I'm not sure that I like the characters and some of the scenarios just hit my anxiety too hard and too specifically (the whole shoplifting accusation sequence was too uncomfortable.) I might give it another crack next year but at the moment if it's a choice between that and Hades...well....

The majority of my gameplaying this year helped quite a bit with distracting me from some of the major stresses of this year with anxiety and depression. I suspect I'm not alone this year.

As for what suffered this year? Handheld gaming. No travel time to work meant all of my gaming was on a big screen! Switch was docked 24/7 I did rescue my PSP earlier this year from exploding batteries. I need to play more handhelds next year.

So my top five of what I completed or played this year.

The Outer Wilds An astonishing work, beautiful and terrifying in equal measure.

Hades  I've sunk 130 hours into this and I'm still finding new things and hearing new story beats.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake I think this walks the tightrope of appealing to long time fans as well as providing the perfect entry point into the series. YMMV. (It's The Last Jedi of videogames.

Animal Crossing The best game for the worst time.

Astrologaster A true surprise, a simple narrative choice game lifted by fantastic writing and amazing voice acting.

Thanks again to everyone contributing to this thread, several games I played were due to reading your pocket summaries. Look forward to reading your views next year.

One more to bring me up to date:

36. Cyberpunk 2077
A mess of contrasts in almost every way. Some incredibly polished and cutting-edge stuff next to things that are held together with sticky tape or barely thought through. The city is equally fascinating and dull. The fiction is full of potentially interesting ideas, but doesn't gel together into a convincing whole. The RPG elements give you plenty to experiment with but the design of the action sequences gives you very little reason to bother.

There is something very special about interacting with the characters in this world though, at least the ones that have been properly fleshed out for major missions. Those close-up first-person conversations are real highlights, and the class or skill based dialogue options add to the sense that you're contributing in character. The way that effects of some missions feed into later missions is also very impressive. This is where the game feels like it has focus and knows what it's trying to do.

If that was all, I would still probably rate it as a 7 or 8 out of 10. But I was on a PS4, so I played it with all the crashes, bugs and poor performance that entails. It's a constant drain on the experience, as you repeatedly reload or muddle through a section that isn't working as intended. That drags it down to something more like a 5 for me.

31/12 - Yakuza Like A Dragon (Xbox One)- An absolutely brilliant entry into the Yakuza series. The shift to a turn based RPG that I was originally sceptical about, works. Ichiban is a great new protagonist and his merry band of friends are all lovable in their silly ways. There’s also a ridiculous amount of side content. Excellent stuff and quite probably my game of the year.

Completing Yakuza 7 on New Year’s Eve brings my total to 36 games. Ys VIII and Hatsune Miku Project Diva Future Tone would be my games of the year released in previous years. Ys VIII is an absolute classic, that anyone who likes action RPG’s should play and Hatsune Miku is one of the purest games out there. Anyhow onto 2021 and hopefully making some big inroads into my massive backlog.

Full list for completeness:

Despite 2020 being an absolute shitshow it did provide me with one of the best years of gaming I can remember.

From a completion perspective I also finished way more than during a "normal" year. This was thanks in no small part to a new years resolution I somehow stuck with all year, involving reducing backlog and only ever having a single "big" title on the go alongside an indie game at the same time. Worked an absolute treat and will be doing exactly the same during 2021.

Favourite Game Released in 2020: Final Fantasy VII Remake

Favourite Game Not Released in 2020: Witcher 3

As others have mentioned (and as I've mentioned elsewhere), one of the benefits of this otherwise horrible year was the opportunity to play more games, and as a result I played over 80 games in 2020 and completed 41, which is pretty good going. I've enjoyed writing about them in this thread a lot, sometimes almost as much as playing them, to the point where it's got me thinking I should do a bit of games writing more formally, but we'll see.

Anyway, the best 2020 game I played this year was The Last of Us: Part II, and my favourite non-2020 game was Disco Elysium.
