Edge #341 | The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

The DS review itself reads fine, and love or loathe the game it’s hard to argue with the reviewer’s points - though it is a little snippy as regards the character writing, which can be compelling and genuinely affecting in certain chapters. It also rattles off a whole paragraph of indie game titles that do some similar thematic/gameplay things as DS, which is all very big and clever, but reads again like an unnecessary riposte to those commenting on the risky originality of the whole thing (especially as a AAA production).

Despite this, it still reads overall like more than a 6.

Add to that a post script which is all about Edge getting some Twitter stick for their whole approach to this, and which reads like both a mea culpa and a good old-fashioned whine, and it’s hard not to see the 6 as more of a meta statement.

Scorewatch: A 6 is so non-commital: “we didn’t like it but don’t wish to alienate the fanbase”. Not saying that’s what it is but... two months to review one of the biggest games of the year and can barely be motivated to play it. I was anticipating the meltdown of a 3 or 4.

See that's exactly what I take away from it all.

It seems Edge had pretty much made up their mind not to like the game pretty early on in their playthrough. Or even before that. One of the biggest releases in more way than one, and yet it didn't get a lot of coverage in Edge

The preview of a few months ago also had a very sour undertone, and the "Hollywood pals" comment just sounded downright bitter.

Ah well, be interesting to read the actual review.

The DS review doesn't seem that inflammatory to me (although I don't own or have any interest in owning the game so I'm neutral on the whole thing) - they call out the slow walking and continuous tripping over but also praise the big budget game doing weird things. @grindmouse isn't wrong when he calls it non-committal.

However, that's perfectly fine - "committing" to a shoulder-shrug of a review is preferable to some deliberate exaggeration and throwing out a 2 or a 9 to generate discussion...

As good as 3rd Strike though? :sherlock:

Been reading up on the The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game, and tbh I don't see why it'd warrant so much attention. From what I've read it sounds more like the sort of thing that gets casually mentioned in the continue/quit section:

Continue:

Lord of the Rings:

Daedalic Entertainment is making a game entirely based on the creature Gollum. Seriously.

Quit:

Lord of the Flies:

Kojima Productions will no longer be sending us free review copies of its future games. Sadface.

Prankster101 eat yer heart out.

Which is odd . Because you have to be utterly shit to “ constantly trip over “ after the first few hours . The game gives you the tools so that rarely happens . You basically have to do it on purpose for it to be a problem . With regards to slow travel , again that becomes surmountable as you progress through the game and part of the challenge and enjoyment is from making what seemed insurmountable , traversable with  ease .
For me it’s the easiest GOTY for some time , but I’m fine with people not liking it, horses for courses and all that .

The review actually discusses all of those caveats you’ve just raised so it would be worth reading it before critiquing the critique. It’s the kind of review that I’d honestly like to see more of in Edge - something with perspective of the game, the reviewer’s place in the process and the discourse that has already developed, rather than just the race-to-the-embargo-date stuff even the best outlets are stuck with on the internet.

I doubt Future will go for a magazine of exclusively months-old reviews tho.

For Android subscribers, it looks like Google News support is ending from January. I've just signed up to the free trial on Amazon so I can read it via the Kindle App on my phone and tablet. I'll see how that goes. Hopefully it's better than the shite Google News version.

What will happen to the edge issues I bought on Google News? Just disappear as is the Google way, or will we be able to read purchased issues in a different app?

If you try to access the latest issue from Google Play you'll see a page saying "Important Announcement" with the details. Apparently, Google will be in touch "shortly" regarding how to keep issues you already own.

Maybe the reason the next month tease is a giant number 6 is because they expected this conversation. Or not.

I still can’t figure out how last month’s tease fits in to this issue.

From memory it was the colours of India’s flag. And there is a feature on the Indian gaming scene at the front of the new issue.
