In all seriousness 6 or 7 is probably about right for Shenmue III if you were only treating review scores as a buyer's guide, but with it being what will now be a bit of gaming history it's a lot more significant a release than such a rating can represent.

They should have just left DS unreviewed. Clearly done begrudgingly.

Similar to K’s comments above, it isn’t possibly a 6 (competent/above average) for anyone. It’s either an 8-10 or a 1-2, surely.

If Death Stranding is a 6 then Shenmue 3 must be a masterpiece.

What? I just bought Edge in a newsagents about an hour ago and it wasn't this issue, I got the one with Pokémon sword and shield reviewed in it.

Guess I've caught it right as the new issue was hitting the shelves.

Not necessarily. I bounced off it around chapter 4 so not claiming my opinion to be as well-informed as others but I admired some things about it and disliked others enough to the point where I didn't really care to continue (hated the dialogue and storytelling and ultimately the gameplay loop just felt too much like actual work for me to want to continue when I disliked the narrative and characters so much) but I can still appreciate a lot of the unique craft in the game.

Glad to see that, just as major gaming websites took two to three months to realise that maybe that there Pathologic 2 was worth covering once streamers had elevated its profile, so has Edge needed a few months more to catch up with them.

Still, looking forward to seeing what they make of it.

I'd be interested to read the DS review. It's scored very well in most places. IMO on production value and scope alone it's higher than a 6. But it'll be interesting to read.

Am I misremembering, or did they get a little salty because they were asked to finish the game before reviewing?

They're probably the biggest name in modern point and click adventures, though they've been quiet the past few years. Unfortunately their writing is generally terrible (some of which could be down to translation, but nothing could fix Deponia's godawful characters), but their visual design is second to none.

They also published Shadow Tactics, the best game to ever come out of the Commandos mould, so that's something.

Shenmue kind of highlights how ridiculous it is giving a score out of ten to something as complex and subjective as a videogame. To be honest, that applies to most games, but given that Shenmue will be a ten to a specific group of people and a much lower score to anyone else, it particularly highlights the situation. It’s impossible to give it an “accurate” score and probably impossible to review it in the conventional sense, but I’m really interested to see what they have to say about it.

The mythical Edge 6 often seems to be awarded to such gaming curios (Death Stranding?) Well, maybe not curios, exactly, but more niche series or something (Shenmue)? It’s hard to pinpoint and I’ve honestly just plucked this theory out my arse, but I’m sure an Edge 6 is a thing. It’s the closest thing they have to a “binary score not applicable.” Edge gave a game a 6? If you know you know ;) That type of thing. Edge 6 = if you like this sort of thing it’s actually probably a 9 or 10. If not, it’s a fucking 4 out of 10 travesty.

I like it when Edge award a game that I like a 6. Makes me feel superior and part of the secret club.

EDF2017, SFIII 3rd Strike, Binary Domain...all edge 6 iirc, and all games worth 9 or even 10 to me personally. Edge 6 is fucking legendary.

So definitely an Edge 6 :hat:
