Alternative Xmas Tunes

Recommended Posts

I like Pogues, Mariah, Slade and Wham as much as anybody at Christmas but do get sick of hearing the same songs over and over again. What are some good alternatives?

I know Dylan’s Christmas album and Billy Idols are fun. No Buble or stuff like that. Good Christmas songs that are not on the regular playlists.

Save my sanity at Xmas folks!

Two of my favourites not found on comercial radio playlists:

Sigh...  Sarah Cracknell is so dreamy.

And a guilty favourite that no-body else ever seems to like, but I love:

Another Lonely Christmas / Prince (make sure its the 7 minute version)

Innocent When You Dream / Tom Waits (not a xmas tune but featured in a movie with a xmas story and will forever be connected in my mind)

Musik Fur Kinder III Nr.15 / Carl Orff (the music Hans Zimmer ripped off for True Romance, which had snow in it therefore xmas)

White Winter Hymnal / Fleet Foxes

There's also a really good Beatles tribute xmas album - by The Rubber Band - which is all the classics done in the style of popular Beatles tunes, like Silent Night riffing on Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - it's great if you can stomach it

Yeah I know the lyrics are a bit "Reddit Atheist". But that chord change on "gran and my mum"!

A Charlie Brown Christmas gets me in the mood to chain eat pigs in blankets and get quietly smashed on cooking sherry every time. Festive or otherwise it’s a brilliant album.

I'd recommend Soma Fm as they do quite a few christmas stations, my favourite being the Christmas Lounge where they do nice modern remixes of classic tunes like this:

Sia's Christmas album is a bit of a change.

I also love some of the stuff from The Nightmare Before Christmas, but that isn't going to go down too well with everyone.
