Seems like another sequel to my favourite JRPG Bravely Default has been announced. And for the Switch no less :)

Introducing Bravely Default II.

The story will be completely new and feature a party of characters different from the original Nintendo 3DS games.

And while Bravely Second: End Layer continued the story of the original game, it looks like Bravely Default II will be a new standalone game, that might probably just share the overall themes from the first two games. This is of course nothing new for the publishing company, Square Enix, as both the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy series have followed this model.

The game will be co-developed by both Team Asano and Claytechworks - the devs behind the first Bravely Default. Reno will return as well, to do the soundtrack.

Debut trailer:

Latest trailer:

Releases Q1 2021.

I beat the original and it was a disaster of a second half but a solid 6/10 overall. I heard they didn't repeat the mistakes with Bravely Second but I just haven't tried it yet.

I hope with a bit more behind it, this could develop into a good series. The town's, battle system and cast of the original were fantastic.

It looks like a step down from Octopath Traveler in every way. The four crystals of fire, water, wind and earth? Come on. And the art style isn't a patch on Octopath. Boo.

Octopath 2 on non-mobile instead, please.

I think it looks gorgeous.

I think it mentioned they tweaked the difficulty especially for the demo so people would get more out of it. A pretty daring choice but I like it, in fact I hope the full game will have the option to start like this. Nothing as annoying as a JRPG with a good turn based battle system that's too easy (I'm looking at you Grandia 2).

Yeah I’ve been really enjoying it. Staggering back to the town and scraping money together for a night at the inn to restore HP/MP is way more fun than just having 99 High Potions and Ether in the inventory (of just spamming cure without a care in the world)

I think 6 is the best Final Fantasy, and Octopath Traveller was alright, but I've never played any of the Bravely Default games before. Will I like this?

I think so, yeah. I thought Octopath was pretty shit actually, but I also enjoyed FFVI. I’ve not played the original, but I loved Bravely Second. Best FF for years.

I played the latest demo over the weekend. It’s quite challenging! A group of standard-looking enemies destroyed me. I think there’s more I need to learn about the ‘default’ system. But it was nice - very reminiscent of classic Final Fantasy, especially the little audio flourish as battle begins.

I don’t think I’ll be jumping in right away as I’ve got so much else to play right now, and what I played intrigued rather than excited, but it ticked a lot of boxes.

From what I can remember of playing Bravely Second, it was a very traditional JRPG with an interesting battle mechanic and job system, and fixed many of the usual annoyances that come with the genre. I seem to remember being able to disable random battles if you wanted to? Probably using some special crystal or something. But that was good.
