Best TV of 2019

Recommended Posts

This thread tells me that not enough people watched The Virtues, which is a real shame.

It was an absolute masterpiece, I think it might be Shane Meadows' best work:

It also contained the best acting of the year. Stephen Graham's performance was absolutely incredible. If you haven't seen it, you really should seek it out.

On a lighter note, this was the funniest five minutes of the year:

No love for True Detective? I thought it was fantastic. So hard to get a consensus on stuff as there's just so much of it. Anyway, here's a stab from me:

01: Chernobyl

02: Watchmen

03: Unbelievable

04: Fleabag

05: True Detective

06: The Boys

07: The Mandalorian

08: Mindhunter

09: This Time with Alan Partridge

10: Russian Doll

Yet to see: Doom Patrol, The Virtues, Dark Crystal,  countless others...

Edit: please click my links when you can have audio on. They're very funny, I promise :)

Sounds like Watchmen and Beforeigners need watching.  The Virtues exhausted me so I had to abandon it

2) Watchmen

3) Dublin Murders

4) The Expanse

5) The Boys

Sorry Baz, but Watchmen is amazing

1. Bob's Burgers season 9

2. Ghosts

3. Years and Years

4. Rick & Morty season 4 (so far)

5. This Time With Alan Partridge

6. The Tick season 2

7. Good Omens

I think that's pretty much all of the new TV series I've seen that were first broadcast this year. Most of my TV watching consisted of catching up with older stuff (all of Bob's Burgers; the E4 broadcasts of Rick & Morty; a couple of seasons of Flash and Supergirl) and rewatching a few things (like all of Avatar and Legend of Korra ).

Best thing I’ve seen this year was the BBC NI series on The Troubles. Thought Succession was great as well, not really watched much apart from that that was good.

In no order:

Russian Doll

Fleabag

Umbrella Academy

Good Omens

Catastrophe

The Orville

Most things I’ve watched have been from previous years. Onto series 2 of The Tick right now and it’s cheap and has winky special effects but it’s definitely my sort of thing.

The only noteworthy shows I've seen this year are Chernobyl, The Virtues and Dark season 2 (in that order). Everything else has been pretty unremarkable I'm afraid.

However, I did rewatch Deadwood and then the final film, which was so fucking brilliant. God I love Deadwood.

Not watched much in the way of TV series this year, or for a few years to be honest, but The Virtues and Chernobyl are outstanding. Both should be used as benchmarks for how great TV writing should be constructed.

Line of Duty continued to be enjoyable too, made up for The Bodyguard.

Bookmarking a few others mentioned in this thread though, thank you Rllmuk :)

A perfect thing. Could not be improved in any significant way. Best tv of the year. Best tv of the decade. The best tv.

I bounced off Chernobyl around episode 3. I just got bored

Perhaps I will give it a second chance

Same here, maybe I was expecting too much after all the hype it received.

Another vote for Chernobyl. Aside from it being astounding, it also did that rare thing of actually being recognised for how brilliant it is.

Also, echoing a lot of other choices in the thread:

Watchmen (!)

Fleabag

The Boys

The Expanse

Mrs. Maisel

Killing Eve (I don't care. I still liked it!)

Mindhunter

True Detective

I've not watched much TV this year, but I enjoyed the final season of GoT, although I'm kind of glad it's over now. S3 or Stranger Things was good fun as well, and a marked improvement on S2.

Is Chernobyl still available on Now TV?

I just watched the first episode of Chernobyl, inspired by this thread. It was fantastic, but completely harrowing. Definitely going to keep on watching it, but I may have to gird myself beforehand.

Is it based on a book or from the creator's own research, does anyone know?

The director did a ton of research

Anyone watching Chernobyl really needs to seek out the supporting HBO podcast as well. Really adds a lot Imo.

Is that best to listen to after each episode or once I've watched the full series?

The podcast is a companion piece to each episode, so probably work best after each.

Chernobyl was easily my favourite show of the year.

Don't think anyone mentioned The Expanse on these lists.  Know that some people found S4 slow paced but I love it.

Barack Obama just posted his favourite films an TV of 2019. A world where one of its most powerful leaders watches Ash Is The Purest White and Watchmen, is a world I want to live in. Sadly we’re a long way from that.
