Half-Life: Alyx

Recommended Posts

With this level of VR technology you’ll actually feel like you’re right there as Alyx turns to you and tries to sell you various cosmetic items.

I was skeptical about this, but to be honest I think as soon as I see footage of a new Half Life game tonight and have it confirmed that it's a full-length game I'll be buying a VR headset - I built a PC just to play HL2, so it's not really that much of a leap

Half Life, oh that game in the 2000's? That train has left the station, Valve.

...or just pulled into the station.

They're giving the game away to the only people who can play it?

Makes sense, they're trying to use it to shift Index units.

Woohoo! Playable on the Vive and other setups, not just Index! :omg: Looks fantastic!

They've messed up on their website though, the video opens one for Artifact....

Edit: And now it's fixed, lol.

God, it looks amazing. I'm going to have to buy an Index now.  And build a new PC.

This is also brilliant news, can't wait to see the mods people create on the game's foundation:

Will it be free with Index purchases between now and March?

Just had a look to see how much Index controllers are (already got a Vive) and you get the game free with any of the hardware / bundles (apart from base stations only). Also looks like they've ramped production for this announcement as most stuff has been out of stock for months and its currently all available to purchase. So tempted to buy those controllers - stupid xmas costs coming up!

Wait... so is this on rails or is it not on rails? All the stuff with zooming your head around, ducking down to look through a gap in the shelves or picking up the ammo. Is that using a directional stick as well for movement? If so, it looks interesting... but not sure it's still enough to tempt me to buy a VR headset :( I'll wait and see though...

It looks good, but it also looks like what everyone originally expected from VR, which is a bit shit for 5 years after its launch (or over 7 from the Oculus Kickstarter)

What's the cheap guy option for PCVR? Index controllers and a Samsung Windows HMD?

Okay so that's basically saying "if you get motion sickness, choose a different play style". That's a lot of modes to support! Must be a headache for the designers.

Still, this looks great. I'll definitely pick it up, I just don't know whether that'll be next year or in five years. VR isn't really at a point where I'm happy jumping into it yet. But content like this will surely help it get there.

Looks great.

But as I'll never be able to play it unless they release a 'normie' version without the VR gubbins, I can't get enthusiastic so much anymore :(

Honestly? The whole of this feels a little like a gut punch to folk who've been waiting so long for a new HL game and who don't want to spend large amounts on the equipment.

But there we go. I'm sure it'll be super-dooper for those who can.
