Looks alright and is something the console could have done with instead of straight  464 ports.

 

Also the Gx4000 did come out 2 years after the Megadrive.

It's a port of the Master System game.

I love this shit, I can't get enough of it. I love seeing nutter geniuses beaver away on some ancient PoS machine and produce an incredible port you wouldn't have thought possible back in the day. Like when someone did a proper, labour of love conversion of R-Type for the CPCs a few years back that blew away the crap official version.

It is. The character sprite and level design (signposted hazards!) are all from the GameGear version. :)
