I really enjoyed Diablo 3, but I don't think I can buy Blizzard games any more. I don't see how I can without it essentially telling them it's ok to play by the Chinese government's rulebook, and by extension, showing China just how effective their tactics are.

 

To be honest, I haven't been all that crazy about buying their games since they merged with Activision, anyway.

:omg:That druid.  This is the announcement that I have been waiting 2 years for, and it didn't disappoint, dark and gritty.  I just really hope it isn't a 10 year wait from announcement to playing!  The fact they have an early playable demo available for those at Blizzcon gives me a little hope it won't be that long. :wub:

Annoyingly it sounds like it could be a while "we’re still a way out from launch" they'll start providing quarterly updates on progress next year.

Yeah, that's where I'm at as well. I put a ton of hours into Diablo 3 on the Switch, but the thought of giving Blizzard money after their actions just feels wrong. 

 

Ah well, saves me money on the long run.

Diablo 4 lead quest designer Jason Roberts cited Ito and the horror of settings within the real world.

“Junji Ito and some of the elements he brings in, kind of taking mundane things and twisting them, creating horror elements within that – then there’s the Cthulhu mythos and some of the horror elements there, especially the fear of the unknown,” Roberts told VG247.

I'm really digging the atmosphere of this and the combat in the gameplay videos looks promising. Honestly I hope they make it quite hard like the original Diablo and keep that really dark Diablo 1 atmosphere. Diablo 2 was good with its combat variety but it definitely lost something with its big open areas, same with Diablo 3. They've also said the combat is slower paced which is great news as I much preffered the more deliberate combat and positioning element of the older games than the button mashing of Diablo 3 (not that 3 was a bad game, it just never grabbed me like the first two).

 

What I'm really looking for is a hard as nails experience like Diablo 1 where it feels oppressive, and the dungeons are actually scary where each room and corner is dark, and death could be lurking around every corner. Where the music and sound is thick with atmosphere. Where finding just one magic item is a rush, every rare enemy is a challenge and escaping to town feels like an achievement where you can finally cash in your rewards before heading back in. That's what I hope they can try and recapture.

Try Grim Dawn in the next Steam sale if you haven't played it yet.

Fair enough. For me the tension for Diablo on its default difficulty was part of the appeal, seems like I'm not alone according to this Eurogamer preview, which also talks about the combat and open world:

The open world doesn't sound like my cup of tea, but the dungeons do.

It didn't have the game pass indicator on the 2021/2022 schedule Microsoft threw up at the end of their presentation.

 

I would imagine they can't confirm it until Activision is bought. Similar thing when Bethesda was bought and most of their games immediately spilled into the catalog.
