2005

1. 13 Tzameti  - This was during a period where I far preferred foreign language films and the dark, unctuous,  grubbiness of the plot grabbed me.

2. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - dialogue, a 'buddy' movie done well.

3. Murderball - an eye-opener of a documentary that showed that a profound disability was no barrier to competitive, visceral sporting conflict.

2006

1. Children of Men - In my Top 3 films ever. Brilliantly realised, wonderfully acted, one of those films that pulls off the trick of balancing sublime set-pieces with quiet, contemplative moments.

2. The Prestige - Also in my Top 3. Some days I love this more than Children of Men just as some days Borden loves Sarah and some days he doesn't. There is so much detail that you miss on the first 5 or 6 viewings.

3. The Science of Sleep - I'm a sucker for Gondry. His films are always flawed yet beautiful to wallow in.

2007

1. There Will Be Blood - Pretty obvious choice, felt 2007 was a weaker year than some of the others.

2. No Country for Old Men - Coens in fine form.

3. Stardust - Personal link with the novel - gave it to my wife when I was wooing her and she fell in love with it (- and I'm still not sure how - but me too). As a result it has a place in my heart. Unlike the Golden Compass, I felt it was an effective screen transformation.

2008

1. Wall-E - What's not to love?

2. Gomorrah - equal parts thrilling, terrifying and engaging.

3. Man on Wire - perfectly captures the madness, drive and talent of Petit and his tight walking endeavours. Captivating.

2009

1. El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in their Eyes) - I adore this film. Could never bring myself to watch The Hollywood version. It's a powerful drama with a non-linear narrative, it's a love story, a crime procedural, an insight into Argentina society and much, much more.

2. 500 Days of Summer - does a wonderful job of showing the joy and pain of young love. It's one of those films you tend to fall for or think is a bit schmaltzy. Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the dance number, the narrative shift throughout and so much more. Not sure whether we're allowed to post videos but the dance number is spoiled if anyone fancies enjoying it/gagging at the saccharine fest.

Spoiler

3. Fantastic Mr Fox - wonderfully realised. Sumptuous visual feast.

That's a 2005 film on IMDb, not 6. (Everyone else who's voted for it has put it as 2005.)

Looking through films for 2006 it was listed in there, but further investigation shows that it was released in the US in March 2006. No matter, I've changed it.

What year do you want it in? IMDB gives 2009.

Sorry - my bad - entered it wrong in the spreadsheet.

Fine where it is

I think they mistook Fury Road for an uncomfortably hard hitting documentary on post Brexit Britain - that's the only explanation for it.
