Arcade style racers that make you (and the Man from DelMonte) say *insert self generated engine and handbrake turn noises*

As well as some of that good old fashioned *Watch as I lean real hard in my seat as I yoink the controller in the opposing direction to drift around the corner more betterer in the game* insanity. You know you've done it. We all have. Some of us still do.

With that said, whats your top picks? It goes without saying the Outrun 2/C2C wear the crown and if you don't agree then you must be a sad little clown. That's it... so now thats clear, onto the list thread. Yay! List thread!

Bonus points if you can actually say why something is decent and a reason to check it out as I just realized there is an absolute truck load of titles on the PS3/360 that I never checked after discovering that there was an actual Sega Rally follow up that all of five people must've bought...

LOL, how many of these have we had by now? :) Devs and publishers take note, plenty of appetite for arcade racers if rllmuk threads are anything to go by!

Admittedly, I've had a lot of fun with Mario Kart Tour. Ignoring all the MTX rubbish I find it addictive to beat scores by nailing drifts and combo's.

This, speaking recent games.

Not sure I've seen Blur mentioned yet, which I was a massive fan of. Like; it's probably one of my favourite games of the 360 era. I think in the hundred odd hours I spent with it I didn't have a race without a blood-pumping, nail-biting finish. So, so good with a fantastic soundtrack that I still listen to now.

It's such a shame we don't get many games of this type now. Modern Life is Rubbish.

THIS!!! FOREVER!

Though interestingly, I'm now in the final 'episode' of Split/Second and enjoying that challenge a lot still.

Always 'preferred' Blur in the nonsense rivalry between them as both games got released in the same week, though they're very different beasts really. It's just sad both devs met their demise fairly soon after these excellent arcade racers came out.

Outrun? Not a chance. Little to no skill involved in the drifting and bland forgettable tracks.

Ridge Racer is the king and hopefully we get another entry next year for the new PlayStation!

No skill in modern Ridge games either. We need an Ridge V or before handling model.

GTI Club: Rally Côte d'Azur. It wasn't that good but there was a period when it seemed to be in every arcade wherever I went on holiday, so it's the first thing that came to mind that hasn't been mentioned.

Wish I'd been able to get the PS3 version before it was removed from sale. :(

Didn't it have a working handbrake?  That was glorious...

It's "supported" in MAME but I can't remember if it was ever playable with the available controls - I think I had a hard time because I didn't have anything that could do analogue steering.

I have a great deal of nostalgia for Project Gotham 2 on the original Xbox. 3 and 4 were good on Xbox 360 too, but for some reason I'm yearning for 2. I don't know how I'd play it today though, unless I find a way of connecting my old Xbox with HDMI.

Favourite "pure" arcade racer is probably Outrun 2006, which I still have installed on Steam. But I like where racers like Project Gotham sit between arcade and sim.

I'm in the mood for a "halfway between arcade and sim" racer on PS4, but I honestly don't know what to go for. I have a feeling that if I bought GT Sport now it would have 50GB of updates and confuse the hell out of me. The new GRID looks decent but maybe too barebones.

PGR2 is backwards compatible on Xbox 360. I fire still it up every 2 years or so :)

If you're who I think you are, we played each other quite a lot on Blur, around the time I became pretty much invincible online!

Probably the only game I've ever truly mastered. I wish there was a remaster for the current gen.

Burnout Paradise is probably my choice although I want to really give a shout to the massively overlooked Burnout 1. Amazing tracks; much more than people realise when you take in to consideration that the traffic is plotted out and a massive part of the design.

The feeling of perfecting that skid around the corner and threading it *perfectly* between a car and a lorry just hasn't been replicated since!

Also made time trials like crack!

Cheers to that! What was you Live gamertag then? :)

Blur surely marks the most memorable period in online gaming for me. Ever.

It was the Summer of 2010, a memorable one for multiple reasons for me, but mostly because we played Blur most nights from like 9PM to 3AM. With the steely @Karzee, fast @Varnsen, quick @Goldbricker, fun @FuntimeDave and @Dave White, rock solid @SnoopZakaDaVe, evil @Hoodedclaw, f(r)iend @smithstock, reluctant arcade racer @Meerman, even @Boozy The Clown was in on it and let's not forget the ever lovely annoyance that was @gobsheen. And many, many others (sorry to whom I've not mentioned here) - which actually led to have 18 forumites and some friends in a lobby at the same time!

The racing, the shooting, the battering, the drifting (which sadly broke the online competition a little bit as the elite players exploited drift-boosting) - not to mention the name calling, the swearing and the general banter.

Bloody amazing soundtrack too. (As this reminded me of it I just favourited over half of the tracks on Spotify.

The Forza Motorsport days were great too and we now have a similar thing going strong with GT Sport now. Though as fantastic as that is in its own right, it will never match the sheer explosive competitive fun that Blur gave us all. The dedicated thread is still a massive testament to that. And the online revivals which actually went on until 2013.

RIP Blur. You were so incredibly loved over here.

(This REALLY makes me want to set up another revival night. Again.)

I had many online names on the 360. FamiDude was my original but I got a new tag and ran with the ZZR guys(an anti clan piss take of the RRZ clan) as either BongoNoob/DriftyNoob. And I'll admit to abusing the drift boost to the point I was DNFing full 20 player lobbies.

I love arcade racers. Proper fun, colourful ones, with aliasing all over the place and shinies everywhere. Silly handling, loud music, unforgiving time limits, and an over-sized cabinet with a steering wheel and pedals. They are the cornerstone of a decent arcade. I went to Arcade Club in Bury recently, and there was a Japanese story-based one which I liked. It might have been Initial D? I'm not too sure. Anyway, it ticked all of these boxes for me.

For me, 'arcade' racers for the home very rarely capture what makes them so great in an actual arcade. Mainly because they need to offer more value to the player, I guess? More stages and modes, more generous time limits, plus most people will be sat there playing it with a controller in their living room. Just give me three tracks, a time limit that runs out during lap 2, and the shittest, OTT graphics you can imagine.

Is it possible to emulate some of these newer (2005+?) arcade racers on PC? What's the latest MAME will go up to?

Not so much with MAME, but there’s Teknoparrot which will run a few like Chase HQ2, various Initial D versions, Outrun 2 etc.

The newest Daytona arcade game can be run natively on a PC with a couple of tweaks.

Excellent, cheers!

EDIT:

This is exactly what I'm talking about:

Shit graphics, a timer, silly music, nitros, and even someone shouting orders at you. The best.

I love Ridge Racer  most especially type 4 and 6/7. I want to see new Ridge Racer on next generation console with open world like 5 and 6 plus storylines of Ridge Racer type 4.  Who ever get this on next generation console first will get me buying their console.

Formula = 4K 60FPS Ridge Racer 7 + Storylines and characters from RR Type 4 + more = Take my money.

I think this thread has covered most.

PGR 2 is my ultimate, and shame I was exceptional at.

RR 3D deserves a mention for portable arcade fun, as do the PSP titles.  A new RR in a style anything other than Unbounded would be amazing, 6 and 7 were near perfect for me.

I'd like a racing game set on alien planets. I think i've mentioned this before when I've use 'set on alien planets' in regards to every other genre of game.

Does RR7 actually get any faster? I started playing it a while back and got through a few leagues hoping it would speed up but there is literally no feeling of acceleration in the cars, everything just seems to be plodding along which was a huge step back from the sensations of many other arcade racers. PSP version was excellent though.
