Arcade style racers that make you (and the Man from DelMonte) say *insert self generated engine and handbrake turn noises*

Recommended Posts

As well as some of that good old fashioned *Watch as I lean real hard in my seat as I yoink the controller in the opposing direction to drift around the corner more betterer in the game* insanity. You know you've done it. We all have. Some of us still do.

With that said, whats your top picks? It goes without saying the Outrun 2/C2C wear the crown and if you don't agree then you must be a sad little clown. That's it... so now thats clear, onto the list thread. Yay! List thread!

Bonus points if you can actually say why something is decent and a reason to check it out as I just realized there is an absolute truck load of titles on the PS3/360 that I never checked after discovering that there was an actual Sega Rally follow up that all of five people must've bought...

I'm currently enjoying Trackmania Turbo, despite my initial reluctance,

It's the first game in ages (maybe ever actually) that has made me tilt and roll my head in funny ways as I navigate the crazy wallrides and loop the loop type things.

It's basic as all hell but I think that's the compelling thing about it and it has the 'just one more go' thing going on big time.

I usually put it on when I'm waiting on my lift to work in the mornings as if he turns up and I'm mid race it's no big deal just to shut the xbox off.

I never try the Multi Laps in the morning though (that would be utter madness)

The best arcade racer is the spiritual OutRun successor which exists on a spreadsheet in my idle hobbies folder. Sadly I know jack shit about gamemaking nor have the time to, but if Sega ever call they can have it.

In no particular order :

Burnout 3 / revenge

Sega Rally

Outrun coast to coast

Trackmania series

Wreckfest.

All games I revisit regularly. Outrun on steam was / is the best purchase I ever made on steam.

I would've put F-Zero but having recently replayed on switch, it's not aged well.

Rise: Race the Future on Switch.

It has it’s own thread where I’ve been both highly critical and sang it’s praises but I can’t stop playing it. It’s glorious.

It has that feel, where getting a power-slide round a corner, inches from the inside edge, perfectly lined up for the exit and boosting away is just orgasmic.

Despite it’s flaws it’s my favourite arcade racer (that isn’t MK8) for a very, very long time.

GTI Club: Rally Côte d'Azur. It wasn't that good but there was a period when it seemed to be in every arcade wherever I went on holiday, so it's the first thing that came to mind that hasn't been mentioned.

Wish I'd been able to get the PS3 version before it was removed from sale. :(

Can I chuck in some for bikes - Manx Superbike TT, the Climax developed MotoGP games - 2,  ‘06 and ’07 possibly the pick of the bunch, and lastly Driveclub Bikes which maybe even more than the previously mentioned games had a sublime handling model that let you back it into corners and power slide out

Found the 30 FPS off-putting. The shallow corners and general location dull and the handling model utterly disengaging.

To add, it's well made. I just find it boring.

S2 (Screamer 2). There weren't a lot of PC arcade racers back on the day, but this had great tracks, good handling, and some really tense racing. Probably down to a shed load of rubber-banding mind. Replay mode was good, too, if I'm remembering correctly.

Excite Truck on the Wii is a total ripper. Still incredibly exciting and careering today, as much as it was then.

Best is no fuckin competition as stated in the OP.

Not sure I've seen Blur mentioned yet, which I was a massive fan of. Like; it's probably one of my favourite games of the 360 era. I think in the hundred odd hours I spent with it I didn't have a race without a blood-pumping, nail-biting finish. So, so good with a fantastic soundtrack that I still listen to now.

It's such a shame we don't get many games of this type now. Modern Life is Rubbish.
