Marianne - New Netflix Horror - It's kinda good

Recommended Posts

It's a French series about a young woman who has been writing successful horror novels with the inspiration of her recurring nightmares about a witch, Marianne. When she decides to stop writing about her after 15 years, her nightmares return with a vengeance, seemingly intersecting with her real life, thus forcing her to return to her hometown to find out what is happening.

I know, doesn't really sound like anything new, but I'm 4 episodes in and very pleasantly surprised. There are some wonderfully eerie scenes that truly manage to build suspense. Without spoiling anything, there is also an actress who is very, very good at being the creepy grandma of nightmares.

Based on the excellent write up by Yakumo I thought I would give this a go. It's good, but can't I have normal foreign language subtitles like I was watching a DVD or film four movie?

I I know when a door is creaking, I just want the French translated to English. Does Netflix provide this?

I watched this all on Netflix. Standard subtitles.

Anyway, this was fantastic. One of the best surprises I've had in a long while. It's creepy, funny, sad and so well done, that I cannot recommend it enough. Go watch it.

I don't know. We watched it in my smart lg TV. I didn't change anything. It just had normal subtitles.

Who the fuck is hyping it? It's just very good. I enjoyed it. It's that what's classed as hype these days? I'd never heard of it before it popped up on Netflix. So yeah, well hyped.

Tonally quite jarring but finding it fairly engaging so far.

Watching it dubbed as subtitles are too small to read. Whoever wrote the subs or wrote the dubbing script needs a slap. Some pointless differences throughout.

I didn't make it past the first half hour it was so awful. I'd seen the recommendations so sought it out, and perhaps it gets better, but it's hard to press on with something when you're hating it so much.

We started this last night but I'm struggling to think what might have been so bad about the first half hour that might have put me off. We thought it was interesting enough and the premise has potential. Not only that but the scares were quite effective too (the scene in the bed when her partner turns over!). So yeah, pretty good imo. Opinions eh? ;)

I wonder if it does make a difference watching these things in the original language with subs. We never watch dubs, not that I'm a snob like that or anything. They're always bloody awful! The only ones I've actually enjoyed have been the Studio Ghibli ones (for the most part).

Finished this last night. Thought it was pretty well done and glad we watched it. Some really good scares. I can see why some might dump it as the main character is a bit unlikable at first but that gets better as things are unveiled about her.

Yeah, that's what I liked. The reveals around character actions are well done.

I absolutely loved this.
