House of the Dragon - Game of Thrones prequel

Another fantastic episode, this is so well put together and confident in itself, almost the opposite of what latter GoT was with its ADD pacing and the need to deliver moments for the 'socials'.

I'm not normally somebody that into the score but Ramin Djwadi's was on top form last night, it wasn't an over noisy distraction but enhanced the scenes of people skulking round the castle perfectly.

I had similar thoughts on Larys

Spoiler

mine was the he is faking it but I went to the Prestige for my fake schtick thoughts

Alicent is at least trying to steer Aegon away from doing in all the potential claimants, and seemed pretty horrified that her father had been planning it all.

Spoiler

That was the one bit I wasn’t delighted with. It removed a lot of agency from Alissent, as if she wouldn’t know what it was going to take for Aegon to actually claim the throne and so appears all surprised and hurt that the small council has been preparing for it. Before that did she just assume everyone would bend the knee because of what she tells them Viserys whispered to her?

Rhaenys then nails it in further telling her she is trying to carve a window in her prison, when I’ve never viewed Alissent as that kind of subservient character.

An absolutely incredible episode and on par with episode 3 for me.

I’m sure she’ll end up going that way, or suffer some consequences, but I was pleased they steered her away from just being another Cersei and doing whatever it takes to keep power, and try to to find a better path.

Tremendous episode, particularly that last 5 minutes.

Spoiler

I said something similar last week, but I really like how they've fleshed out Alicent's character - she could have been such a 2 dimensional character, but there's a lot of complexity in her, trying to do the right thing and keep the peace.

The scene with her and Rhaenys in particular was excellent.

I think this is going to be awesome to binge watch when all 10 episodes are available - they've covered a hell of a lot in this season.

dracarys.

But I guess there'd have been no show left. At the very least they could've made Ser Criston Cole into Ser Crispy Coal.

That’s another example of how this isn’t following the principles set out in GoT (books and the first half of the series)…

…with plot armour being back in full force.

She publicly chooses a side (or at least makes an enemy). sHows no remorse at killing  hundreds of men, women and children, then , had the ability to end the conflict there and then. And doesn’t.

The True Scotsman GoT would have had her burn them and rolled with that. Same for the war at the start that should have killed Damon except for his plot armour.

still massively enjoying it though.

I like the wee old Scottish guy at the first meeting who was all like ‘nah I’m not standing for this shit’, didn’t do him much good though.

and the way Allicent rolled her eyes and fucked off when Otto said she looked like her mum.

I don’t mean to be nasty but is that the Sephiroth actors real face? The chin has to be at least 50% putty.

The Alt Shift X bloke has mentioned a few times that Rhaenys does not have the power of hindsight (or is it foresight?) As viewers we strongly suspect things are going to descend into war (or know definitively if you've read the book, which I haven't), but after her conversation with Alicent she still maintains hope for a peaceful solution and would rather not become a kinslayer. It's a fair point when you think about it, as much as I felt blue-balled by the lack of chargrilled team green.

plus torching their whole family seems like overkill when all they really did was lock her in a room for the morning. I don't think she cares enormously that they're usurping the throne. If anything she seemed dissapointed that Allicent was usurping it for her cretinous son instead of taking the throne herself.

Allicent had a weird line implying that

the sea snake wasn't actually that badly injured and is just making a meal of it as an excuse to stay away. How would she have known that after a day?

I kinda prefer the Green side of the family now just cos they're all completely radge mutants. Rhaenyra's well adjusted sons aren't very interesting.

Yep, they're side by side at the dinner and I'm sure we get something mentioned about it in the chat.

Watched episode 9 tonight, good stuff.

Spoiler

Nice to see more of Allicent, she's a good character and a quality actress. Now I'm definitely veering to 'didn't kill the maid', not that that seems to matter any more.

Seeing the cogs immediately whir into motion on the king's death was cool, should have guessed all the plans were already in place from Allicent's dad. At the coronation I was like, well they're taking a long time on this, but surely they won't do a Game of Thrones and have something mad happen. And I couldn't see any obvious threats. So when the place exploded it took me a few seconds to process that something actually was happening because I was sort of shellshocked

I do agree if it was classic GOT all of those characters would be burned to a crisp, I didn't really fear for all of them because they wouldn't kill all of the antogonists, though I did wonder if maybe Allicent or Aegon would get eaten. In the end it was a bit of an odd scene, I guess just Rhaenys showing that she's powerful but also morally better than them. Maybe she's also making a point that she showed restraint and they should do the same for their opponents.

I thought it was a good decision to focus this on the Hightowers and the keep's politics and keep Rheanyra and Damon out of the picture, it would have been too much jumping around to cut to them as well.

Looking forward I'm a bit curious how team Rheanyra is going to muster enough House support to fight back (at least politically, she does have dragons), she probably has Rhaenys now but almost every House has sworn fealty to Aegon. Maybe that will change when his unsavory character comes to light, or maybe some good old dragon scorchings will 'convince' people to change sides.

Interested to see what will happen with only one episode left in the season. How will Rhenyra respond? Will we get some sort of showdown? How many major characters will die? Will the possibly mortally wounded sea king return and change the dynamics again?

That ASX video told me something I hadn’t clocked. Aegon and Heleana are married?!

Was there a hint towards that in episode 7?

Yeah, when they talk about the arranged marriage for one of Rhaenarys' kids, and she's there rolling her eyes and talking bout being ignored as his wife.

This show is fairly merciless for those not paying attention to every little thing though, especially with the actor changes removing a layer of consistency.

Agree that it was anti-climactic after last weeks banger episode, but that’s classic GOT.

It certainly serves its purpose as a set up for season 2. Strong “BURN THEM ALL!” vibes.

Spoiler

I got chills when she turned to camera with that face on! Would not fuck with her.
