I'm no expert*, but you would think with an army trapped in caves on a small island the most obvious tactic would be a seige? That's probably the go-to in most situations, at least to begin. Don't let anyone in or out for six months and unless there's a magic tunnel to the mainland or they're sitting on a lot of supplies they're a bit screwed (save for an Onion Knight). It's possible that's what has been happening for most of those three years, maybe I missed something.

*I do quite enjoy those YouTube videos of sword/armour/survival/medieval experts picking apart films and TV shows...

Thing is with all of the history - there is probably a lot of back and forth. They did mention crabman was part of the Triarchy- three of the free cities. So there could have been support from them scuppering Daemon and Corlys plans, Daemon only had the goldcloaks and Corlys only had his house and vassals so their men might have been spread thin enough to stop a full seige, etc.

But this isn't important enough for the main plot to dwell on so there isn't a way to explain all that without a massive info dump which can feel a bit unsatisfactory.

That's precisely what I'm about to do right now.

Ep 1 is slow going but ep 2 gathers more pace.

Dispite both being fantasy they are very different shows, it's a broad genre- I'm excites because I'm into them both so it's a nice book end to the week!

I also thought episode 3 was very uneven. I don't think the time skips are doing it any favours, it just about worked with the main King and succession plot but as a result it ruined the crab man story. As others have said, I don't buy that the war had gone on that long. It could have been handled better.

The main plot with king and daughter is well done, I think both parts are nicely acted and I am interested in it playing out. So far it's lacked bite however, the plots and scheming that made early Thrones such a joy to watch are missing. The villain in Matt Smith is great fun, but as subtle as a...dragon.

Early days though, the pieces of the board are still being put down and it's been good enough to see how it plays out.

They only need to drop a visual hint or a one liner to offer a glimpse of explanation though. It did seem very odd they survived on crab paste that long.

Still really enjoyed it though

I would have liked to have seen a bit more of Gary Crabs. He seemed a bit underutilised. Maybe a bit of exposition about why he was so into crabs would have been cool

I was thinking the same. In GoT we would have got half a season dedicated to him. That goes nowhere.

The first half of GoT played with your expectations that plot armour and wish fulfilment didn’t work. If characters did something stupid they died. It made you believe in the difficulty of choices because there wasn’t a preposterous way out.

This is like later GoT in that the rules of traditional media are back. He’s a main character so he can get away with shit like that battle.

Even if it’s a fake out to play with our expectations- it takes us out of the world.

It's great to see the inhabitants of King's Landing

exercising their freedom of speech to openly criticise the monarchy. 😐

Spoiler

Maybe it’s all gone to shit since Daemon left with the Gold Cloaks?

The Gold Cloaks seem to be working for Viserys in King's Landing now. I thought they went to Dragonstone? Bit confusing.

The Gold Cloaks are the King's Landing City Watch. By definition, they stay in King's Landing. Daemon was just in charge of them for a while. When he left, someone else would get the job.

They left with him in episode 2 I think? They made a point of saying Daemon had his own army, to build up his threat level.

I really am loving Matt Smith's portrayal of Daemon

Spoiler

He's got just the right balance of creepy, hard as nails, totally debauched and unhinged.

I'm simultaneously watching the first season of GoT with my stepdaughter as she's never seen it before, and the pacing of this is actually really quite good.  There's so much going on, and I think it helps that it's all concentrated on a smaller cast of characters compared to GoT which had to switch between different locations and key characters.

If HoD can carry on in the same vein as the first few seasons of GoT, I'll be delighted - I'm very impressed thus far.

Great episode, mainly because there were no dragons. GOT is best when it's just about dirty politics and people being horrible to each other.

You can be horrible to each other by using dragons.

Dragons are ace.

The wee boy from the marshlands needs a spin-off,

GOT: Who Are You Calling a Cunt, Ya Cunt.

A Song Of Talk Shit, Get Hit

it felt like it was leading to a scene where

Spoiler

The king or the maester would check to see if she was ‘intact’ but then GRRM remembered she rides horses AND bloody dragons

it’ll be a shame when (Big dirty balls spoilers)

Spoiler

She gets replaced with the older actress. The whole series could go off the rails if it isn’t done well
