I’m Thinking Of Ending Things 5/5

Watched this last night and loved it. Woke up this morning and can’t get it out of my head. May have to spend the weekend reading theories and giving it at least one rewatch. It’s not that it’s hard to follow, more that there’s so much to unpack. All the cast are superb, but the standout (as always) is Jessie Buckley. She really is the best around at the moment.

I’m a bit up and down when it comes to Kaufman, but this may well be my fave of his. Saying that I haven’t seen Synecdoche, New York.

The Man From Earth

Has a strong following amongst sci-fi followers and dubbed “The 12 Angry Men of Sci-fi” in some ways I can see the comparison, but ultimately for me, failed to deliver in ways the aforementioned 50s masterpiece does. I found TMFE in some ways charming but ultimately couldn’t suspend belief to buy into the really implausible narrative. Worth a watch to satisfy your curiosity, but don’t expect a sci-fi masterpiece. Points awarded for broaching a contentious subject with some dignity but that’s about it.

The Fountain

i am a huge fan of Aranofsky’s work so was really looking forward to this. I found myself truly gripped and the acting, score, production and directing all cane together so well. Extra marks awarded for leaving enough open to interpretation and never attempting to patronise the viewer by holding their hand. I found myself vividly recalling the film for days after viewing.

4.5/5

Bridge of Spies

A second viewing of this thoroughly enjoyable Cold War drama. Marks deducted only for the odd needless “Hollywood action scenes” - the clinging onto the plane midair scene just felt quite out of place. Otherwise had an air of happy-ending Spielberg template but was a thoroughly well produced and entertaining watch.

Predestination

I’m a real sucker for time travel. I feel like I’ve seen most worthwhile films in that genre and was surprised I’d never heard of this before, but went in with minimal expectations. I found it a really well put together and enjoyable watch. It wasn’t terribly mentally taxing, you had worked the twist out way before the end, and I can only really deduct marks for the final few scenes were the obvious is spelt out for the few viewers who hadn’t quite pieced it together themselves.

The Platform

I tend to find Netflix originals more miss than hit, and I find dubbed films a bit distracting, so probably went into this with minimal expectations. As I grow older I have less stomach for mindless violence, so all in the bar was set fairly low. I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised to find a very thought provoking movie that I think deserves repeat viewing. A movie full of symbolism that leaves enough for you to interpret the moral of the story yourself. Compelling.

After Dark, My Sweet

Early 90's noir based on a Jim Thompson book. A punch drunk boxer stumbles into a bar in a small desert town where he meets an alcoholic bar-fly who offers him a job. They end up involved in a badly-planned kidnapping.

I thought this was really impressive. There are some excellent Jim Thompson adaptations (The Getaway, The Grifters) and while this isn't at the same level, it's a great film. I loved the scuzzy Americana aesthetic here - there's run down bars, endless deserts, towns gone to seed and a great variety of weather-beaten faces. Jason Patric is excellent as the ex-boxer whose mind is clouded after too many punches and is easily manipulated by the low-level crooks who involve him in their scheme. The rest of the cast are great - Bruce Dern in particular.

Really good film.

Knives Out

Something like a really good episode of Columbo. Drips you information in just the right doses to have you doubt what you saw and ties it all up satisfyingly.

4/5

The Man From UNCLE

Fairly standard spy plot but decent action and the cast had really good chemistry. Wouldn't mind a sequel but apparently didn't do great at the time.

Brideshead Revisited

I really rather liked this. Goode, Attwell, Wilshaw, Thompson, Gambon etc all give excellent performances. I only have the very vaguest of memories of the tv show so have no idea how it compares. A first rate British period drama.

4/5

Stoker

My second watch of this and I’m pretty sure I really need to see it a few more times to “get” it. There’s a lot of subtext here and another staggering performance from Goode. He towers over everyone else in the film which is no mean feat when you are up against the likes of Kidman.

3.5/5

Rambo. First blood part 2

If there’s one film that’s grown on me in the last few years it’s this one. I spotted an excellent 4K steel book for sale so treated myself. It’s good in 4K, but not stunning. It actually feels like a longer movie than it is as it packs so much into its tight running time. If you’re in your 40s/50s then you may well recall what a phenomenon this was on VHS. It was a film that was simply everywhere and everyone saw it. can’t think of many other films that compare at the video shop, Empire Strikes Back maybe. ET possibly.

Rising Phoenix (2020)

Netflix documentary charting the Paralympic Games and stories of some of the elite athletes who compete in them.  Incredibly inspirational, never mawkish or sentimental, just great stories of people who are brilliant and interesting.  Bebe Vio is an absolute star.

Badlands 5/5

Trying to go through Malick I've not seen, and this was just sensational.

BlacKkKlansman 4/5

John David Washington is great, and I love Adam Driver in anything.

Outlaw King 2/5

Been on my Netflix list for ages, ended up skipping a lot of it.

The World's End

Weirdly I've never seen the final part of the "Cornetto Trilogy" and now, after watching it, I can't understand why.

I loved it!! Funny, action packed, poignant at times. Cast were all terrific and the time just flew by.

Makes me want to go back and watch SotD and Hot Fuzz again.

Robin's Wish

Annoying mournful piano music that never threatens to ever feel subtle or respectful of the subject or the viewer.
Feels a tad like rubbernecking at times.

It's not a nice thing to say, but his widow gets a tad too much time in the spotlight, never comes across as entirely genuine, and does an admirable job of trying and failing to squeeze out a tear at one point. I'd have liked to hear more from the other people around him.
For all it's flaws, it paints a sobering, upsetting picture of a man feeling himself fizzle out while the people close to him are unable to help.

Synecdoche, New York 5/5

watched this after really loving I’m Thinking Of Ending Things. Always been put off giving it a go in the past, as people say how it’s impenetrable of difficult to understand. I didn’t find that at all. It’s certainly complex and has many layers, but I was with the film the whole way, utterly mesmerised with the path it took me on.

No doubt many rewatches lie ahead to fully appreciate it. Stunning filmmaking.

Tigers are not Afraid.

Totally brilliant. One of the most interesting 'horror' flicks I've seen for a while.  Was gripped from start to end of its tightaf 83 minute run time. 5/5

Blood Quantum

Had heard good things about this, and although it was decent, it was ultimately 'just another zombie movie'.  A shame as I thought a lot more was gonna come of the native American vs white people bit.  3/5

Empire strikes back

If you've just turned 50 this weekend and need a midlife crisis pick-me-up film. This is as good as it gets. Back in the cinema where it belongs. It loses 0.000045 points for not showing some random sub par Arthurian short about a bloke in a suit if armour and some watery bint with a sword, like I remember there was in 1980, before the main feature.

Anyway.

Baker County USA aka Trapped (1982)

Some students out in the middle of nowhere, Tennessee, witness some yokels murder a guy, they get in a whole heap of trouble. It started out as a no-frills hicks-v-slicks thriller, with Henry Silva doing his charming/ruthless thing, albeit with as an unconvincing southern accent. The setting relied heavily on a cliched version of American country folk that was suitably trashy, with a dash of sleaze, plenty of gratuitous T&A. So far so enjoyably standard, but the last 20 minutes of this film are spectacular, repays the patient viewer. A nasty piece of work that doesn't mess about, even if it takes a while to do it.
