The Stranger (2022)

Joel Edgerton plays an undercover cop gaining the trust of a person believed to have abducted and murdered a child 10 years ago.

Based on a true case. Australian. Sean Harris, who I think is one of the greatest actors of his generation, plays the suspect and is as ever fucking incredible.

Dark, nasty, slowburn of a thriller. Fantastic film.

5/5

Holy shitbags this was fucking great. Thanks for the recommendation.

Had me second guessing every move (and getting it wrong) by the main players.

Uncut Gems – I think this genuinely nudged the boundaries of cinema a bit further out. From top to bottom it’s just an masterpiece and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since it finished. 5/5.

How stressed did you feel watching it? I've never felt so stressed watching a film before. My wife couldn't finish it cause of the anxiety.

Extremely! It’s an amazing feat as it’s essentially a very small story that they’ve linked into having a much wider significance. I’ve never seen anything like it.

The Others (2001) - DVD

I love this film. I've made a series of lessons about narrative structure and building tension centred around it which I teach every year in the last couple of weeks of the autumn term to my year 10 classes - a ghost story for Christmas, if you will. And all of the kids, every single year, find it entirely engaging, and the big twist blows their minds, and the scarier bits proper shit them up because they're so into it, even the ones who claim they're well 'ard and say stuff like, "You wot, sir? it's only a 12 - how can it be scary?", then I put it on and see their faces fall when it gets to the bit where the little girl looks like the old woman, and, oh! how I cackle.

And this isn't a sentiment that I typically share with the 14-year-olds in my care when we watch it, but uber uptight, Catholic, British Nicole Kidman is mega hot.

A great and satisfying thriller without an ounce of fat on it, and a great Christmas film.

Death Race 2000 (1975)

Within the first 10 minutes of watching this I knew I was going to love it, and this really is a gleefully absurd, entertaining film, with all the inexpensive action and sleaze you'd expect from a Roger Corman production. It could have just been a straightforward post-apocalyptic cross-country road race but here it's elevated to something special thanks to the darkly humourous touches and not-so-subtle satire on the American Way. The tone of the humour was just right for me. There could have been more with the rivalry between Caradine's and Stallone's characters, and the resistance sort of went nowhere, but overall it's a good slice of cult 70s viewing that I'm really surprised I'd not watched sooner.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Disclaimer: I've only really seen the first two films. Dumb sci-fi nonsense with fancy big explosions and a fun antagonist, but generally more forgettable with fewer standout moments compared to the previous films.

Suspiria (1977)

I watched the remake when that came out, and thought it was pretty crap, so watching the original was pretty low on my list of priorities. But OMG. This is a really shocking film. Everything felt so evil and malevolent. The garish colours and agressive soundtrack are particularly overwhelming. I watched it once in a few sittings over this week, finishing yesterday. Then I watched it again in one sitting today, because I felt like I had to make sense of what I'd seen, and so that I'd hopefully sleep a little better tonight. I can't think of the last time I've seen a film and immediately wanted to see it again. Probably never. What a great film. Now I think I absolutely must watch inferno.

A Bunch of Amateurs - 3/5 (iPlayer)

Others have mentioned this, and just here to underline that it’s a charming, sweet and moving slice of life documentary about an amateur filmmakers club, the Bradford Movie Makers.

Bless them, and their beautiful little cinema

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

You can't make a horror comedy said the reviews on release. Landis followed his comedy hit Animal House with this gorefest laugh out loud classic take on Lon Chaney's The Wolfman. The horror chills to the bone the laughs are delivered with expert timing. Scene after scene of iconic images that burn into your life experience and stay with you for years. Ever been alone in an underground late at night ? Truly one of the greatest movies to ever be crafted.

Full/moon.

Great movie. One of my favourite bits... brings back so many memories of shit TV.

See also National Lampoon's European Vacation where there's nothing much on apart from a documentary about cheese making.

Zombie Nightmare (1987)

A zombie film which only has one zombie in it, reanimated through voodoo magic to take revenge on the people who killed him. With a plot setup like that, it should be better than it is. The kills, whilst bloody, aren't particularly graphic. It gets a slightly higher than average score thanks to an early appearance from Tia Carrere and a very bored looking Adam West who still somehow manages to steal every scene he's in without even trying.

sounds better than what i put up with from Prime last night. Another low budget zombie film but this time with Danny Trejo!

Zombie Hunter

Except it isn't really, they paid him for one or two days shooting to prop up a terrible film. Some might argue that amateur efforts shot by friends are worse but I disagree. These are produced to make money and whilst they are more professional looking (just) than amateur efforts they lack enthusiasm or charm they just appear cynical.

It ticks every shit zombie film box. Don't know how to shoot zombie action? TICK - Terrible CG? TICK - Terrible plot? TICK - Awful performances (including Trejo)? TICK. Horrible sexism and women there just to objectify? TICK.

We can add to this a voiceover narrator/explainer even worse than Harrison Ford's voiceover in Bladerunner!

I saw an amateurish zombie film set in a guys apartment in some UK town (Plan Z I think it was called) and that was infinitely better than this rubbish. Same goes for Colin, Zomboat and Zombie Diaries.

0/5

(Zombie nightmare added to my list though!)

(trawling to remember the name of Plan Z I found that someone did a remake of Night of the Living Dead with Gemma Atkinson as Barbara and a set that would be an embarrassment if it were an amateur theatre stage set, might be tricky to find Night of the Living 3D dead 2013 :D )

Forbidden World (1982)

Super-cheap Roger Corman-produced Alien knock-off that was actually surprisingly entertaining in it's crapness. Genetic experiment gets loose in an isolated lab, the story offers no surprises, there's lots of screaming, goo, boobs and idiot decision-making. The base level of watchability managed to roughly coincide with my already low expectations so I ended up going with the flow. It's fast, loose, sleazy and unashamedly borrows from better films in that era's SF boom.

All true but the very end is superb, and in all honesty deserved to be in a better film.

Pusher 2 - Prime free with ads (just one ad, in this case)

Even grimier follow up to the fantastic Pusher. This time focussing entirely on Tonny’s story, although there is a quick cameo from Milo, if you’re familiar with the first film. Mads Mikkelsen is absolutely superb in the lead role. His character, Tonny, is a hopeless underworld thug that makes one poor decision after another, but he portrays him as having just the tiniest sliver of humanity and the ending is really quite touching. It’s a difficult film to watch at times. A nasty, dirty, utterly believable slice of modern day Danish criminal life. It could very well be a fly on the wall documentary.

I’m going full marks if you’re a fan of the series and you’re up for a challenging watch. Dock a mark if you’re not quite so invested in the series/genre as it’s still a beautifully put together piece of film.

Cop Car - Netflix

I wasn’t sure what to make of this from the synopsis. Two kids steal a Sheriff’s vee hic le. That sheriff is Kevin the bacon and he wants his car back. To start with it feels like an almost whimsical coming of age tale but then it goes to some really dark places. A very lean story with some super tense moments, told well, and with some great acting - even from the two kiddo’s. I don’t want to give anything away with it being such a sparse tale, but if you do give it a go, stick with it. It’s most definitely what I would call a crime thriller despite initial appearances.

A surprising 3.5/5

Eat The Rich (1987)

Not totally sure what this Comic Strip-related feature was going for. Whilst there were some good ideas it just meandered towards its ill-defined point. Nosher Powell steals the film as the uncouth, no-nonsense Home Secretary. Those bits (especially his fight with Big Ron off Eastenders) were far more entertaining than the main strand involving a group of disenfranchised misfits attempting to, well, do something or other, eventually. Was there some satirical point to this that passed me by? You can stick as many cameos from the likes of Paul McCartney, Bill Wyman and Sandie Shaw in as you like but when they elicit nothing more than "oh it's so-and-so" there's little point in that either. Yeah, not for me.

2.5/5
