I was very much looking forward to watching this but shall have to wait.

Must be a regional thing then, because I watched it on Disney+ (I'm in Norway). 

 

You can always check with JustWatch (either the web site or the app) where any movie or series is streaming (if anywhere) or at least is up for rental.

Edit: I just checked and you're right, it's not on Disney in the UK. I tried different regional settings on JustWatch and it seems it's only available in Scandinavia, US, Canada and Japan atm. 

This is very unusual for me, I'm used to UK getting loads more new stuff ages before Scandinavia. 

 

For my future posts in this thread I will try to elaborate wether it's available in UK but for now I'm sorry I got your hopes up, I honestly thought the content on Disney+ was global.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

 

I'm not sure I liked this, but I can't work out why. 

 

It was brilliantly shot and acted - though I'm not normally a "you have to watch it in original language or it loses its impact" kinda guy, but the dubbed version was unwatchable, properly 70s porno levels. The story it weaves is fantastic and it's it's all, quite rightly, unremittingly bleak.

 

The music was brilliant as well. It could have been completely out of place, sounding like something from Bladerunner or Dune, but it really added to the foreboding atmosphere.

 

But... I dunno. I felt the battle sequences were a bit too hoo-rah Hollywood, even though they conveyed the pointless slaughter involved. I know it's based on the book and all (which, to my eternal shame, I haven't read) but there were a couple of really predictable "I can't wait to get home to my wife, life is going to be amazing, oh I'm dead" type moments.

 

I feel like I should give it another go, but it's a difficult:

Very British who done it flick, based on the mousetrap play. As they want to make a film based on the mousetrap, but can't until the play ends. blah blah blah screen writer murdered, who did it ? Sam Rockwell turns up mumbling hard to hide his American accent. Saoirse Ronan is the perky assistant who wants to be an inspector.

Mildly funny,  not as clever as an Agatha Christie murder mystery should be. Sufferers from the  age old problem of British films in that it looks so cheap at times. Street that should look like they're in the 1950's feel very 2020. Rockwell does his best but Ronan out shines him. 

There are a few decent laughs, its quite jolly. Its better than death on the Nile.

The Burbs (1989)

 

Had not seen this since it came out, had fond memories of it. Quite a few thoughts;

 

- I never realized Bruce Dern was in this, I've never really followed him but it feels that in the last 10 years he'll pop up from time to time as one of those legendary actors that I just didn't grow up with. So it was interesting seeing a younger-ish version of him.

- Forgot how weird Tom Hanks was back then, has way too much energy and goes over the top frequently.

- It's odd how long it takes to really reveal the neighbors, don't think you could hold the mystery off for that long that anymore.

- It's a really bizarre ending, with first a seemingly poignant fitting ending of 'Maybe WE are the weird neighbors?' to the 3 men suddenly becoming heroes with no repercussions from stalking their neighbors, trespassing, vandalizing their home before blowing it up.    

- I do really like the setting/plot, surprised nobody has tried to modernize it.

Banshees of Inisherin

 

This is one of those films where you walk out and think "what the fuck have I just seen?". And in a good way. 

 

It was just gripping from the first minute. The plot, the characters, the way it's shot, the scenery, the acting especially... All brilliant. Just fantastic.

 

I think one of the best films I've seen for some time. And you could accurately describe the plot in three or four sentences.

 

Oscar worthy, to me.

 

If you haven't seen it. Do.

 

Needs more than a five.

The Quick and the Dead (1995)

 

The Sharon Stone Western directed by Sam Raimi.  A perfect popcorn film, what it does it does really well.  Hackman is effortlessly commanding, Russell Crowe looks like the star he's about to become, DiCaprio is ridiculously charismatic and Stone just looks impossibly gorgeous even when covered in dirt and grime.  Stone doesn't quite convince (almost whiplashing between a great impression of laconic Eastwood and wild-eyed emotion) but she does a more than adequate job.  The ending feels rushed but overall this never deserved to be a flop.  It comes, it entertains, it leaves you with a grin on your face, what more do you want?

Teen Spirit

 

A straightforward story about a shy smalltown girl who enters a reality show singing contest, that's well told and with a lean, no-nonsense running time.

Beautiful lighting and camera work, solid casting and more, give the movie a grounded fairytale feel.

Elle Fanning is quite the triple threat!

This was pretty good and a welcome surprise!

United Kingdom (1981)

I've not been so fired up by a drama this much in a very long time, awe-inspiring stuff. Jim Allen's power TV film predicted so much that would come in Thatcher's 1980s, and a lot of it sadly still rings true today. The government put a local authority in special measures when it defies imposed spending cuts, ousted councillors, together with unions and local residents won't take it lying down, they inevitably come up against the rule of law, but whose law is it? Is it a crime when people stand up against the demolition of public services, denying them and their children a fair deal? This play tackles issues that would become major concerns, including the way the police have switched focus towards protecting the establishment and the status quo from what are perceived as threats to it. It touched on how normal people are increasingly cut out of decision-making, the gulf between grass-roots and party politics, how central government have stripped power away from local authorities, using the sale of council houses as a wedge between councils and people, and much more. Others have been more eloquent about this, and I could go on all night as this really has inspired me, but I'll just say we really need this kind of drama back on our screens. At the end a resident of the estate is interviewed by the news and feels they've learned a lot about how they're treated by the state following the explosive finale. We need that sort of lucidity in people today.

I thought this was excellent. It made me genuinely angry, and that ending sequence was a real gut-punch. John David Washington in the lead role is superb. Absolutely recommended.

Indiana Jones and the raiders of the lost ark.

 

I haven't watched this in probably 20 years, god that is depressing when I type it lol, but it is still absolutely marvellous. I bought the 4k HDR version and it looks amazing, the HDR really does add to the film. The only part I thought really showed its age was the special effects when the Ark is opened

 

I remember when I was a kid I thought Harrison Ford was the coolest son of a bitch alive. I mean he was Han Solo and Indiana Jones how can any man be cooler than that?

 

5/5 and simply one of the most perfect films I have ever seen.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)

 

I should start by saying I'm not really a fan of Weird Al's music, I dont really find parody music funny, it's just something that's never clicked with me. However I do appreciate and respect what he's managed to do with his career and this film was a perfect extention of that.

The film is a wonderful parody of the modern day music biopic, it was great to see them get lampooed in such a funny and outlandish way. So where I don't get much out of parody music, I do with film and I love that Al treated his life story this way, staying true to his character and act.

There's some real fun cameos spread throughout and one particular party scene was so well played, it reminded me of that scene where Homer remembers the town hall meeting in The Simpsons. I did think the middle section veers a little too far off a biopic parody into Naked Gun territory but the final pay off for this was great.

I enjoyed it and laughed a lot, plus I love watching Daniel Radcliffe take on outlandish roles.

I don't know what so many people found so offensively bad in this film.  I found it to be quite enjoyable really.  Yeah, it's not going to win any oscars and the action suffers from a much overused quick cut editing style, so you can't see anything much happening apart from a load of shrapnel and particle effects buzzing about the place.  But that's a criticism that can be levelled at the majority of action films for the last 25 years.

 

It was also refreshing to see a superhero film end without half a city having been destroyed by the end.

I even thought there was nothing wrong with the performance from Jared Leto.

Since hearing about this one, it felt right up my street. The kind of trash peppered with jump scares that I lap up. 

 

Turns out it's the wrong kind of shit though. Overlong, nightmare performances, incoherent at times and just not good. It's about 2 hours long, but would've run out of ideas in an 80 min run time.

The Good Nurse (Netflix)

 

Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain star in this drama based on the true life story which is the US equivalent of Harold Shipman. Redmayne is just the right amount of creepy for the part of the nurse who subtly bumps off his patients. Gripping in a very grim way.
