O'Quinn is the finest example of an actor with what I call 'dark charisma'. He's super magnetic on screen but you cannot trust him. It's a really rare presence, used to great effect here.

Terry O'Quinn's whistling in this is so funny! There is a sequel too with Terry and more whistling which will satisfy more paternal psychopathic wonder.

Stir of Echoes

The sister of Kevin Bacon's wife makes this film, she is like a 2022 intellectual but from the end of the 20th century. At one point, she goes to a street party, and says "Will there be any intelligent good looking single men there? No!". Then Kevin Bacon is a one man crusade to dig both physically and mentally. Immensely watchable, and written by Richard Matheson no less originally.

Pegg is shit. Gervais would have been shitter.

I don't get the hate for Pegg - he's not exactly amazing as Scotty in Trek but he's not shit. But yes, Gervais would have been godawful.

High Crimes

Strong performances help to rescue this mediocre thriller. It has a preposterous plot with a twist you can see coming a mile off. It also features some of the worst editing I’ve seen for a long time. Very early roles for Ruffalo and Shannon.

3/5.

Gladiator

An absolute masterpiece of a film and one of the finest best picture winners of the last 60 years. Quite how Scott went from the lacklustre White Squall to this I’m not sure. Crowe is amazing, simply and effortlessly brilliant in a career defining performance.  The 4k blu ray is a revelation.

He just reeks of "my mate was making a film and got me a part"

I love lots of Pegg's work. Spaced alone almost earns him a free pass. I just don't think his character fits in MI (or Star Trek to a lesser degree).

Thor Love and Thunder

Quite up and down, I thought. Some amazing bits, some stuff less so.

Bale is utterly fantastic and the characters motivation is brilliant. It's all as camp as Christmas, has some really funny moments but it's very obviously a Taika Waititi film and so is tonally odd at times.

I enjoyed the whole thing, my wife really didn't.

I'm going to be harsh and go with

The Dark Knight

Fookin' 'ell!! This is pretty spectacular. Some glorious cinematography and we'll choreographed action couples with another solid Bale performance and a mesmeric turn by the late Heath Ledger. He steals the whole damn film.

Caine and Freeman add extra class. Oldman and Eckhart are really good. Only Gyllenhaal spoils it slightly by not being Katie Holmes.

The Batman

This took me about 8 attempts to get through it all.

I'd call The Dark Knight my most watched film of the last 20 years.

I won't be sitting through this again ever.

"You're not my father." really got on my tits.

I couldn't see fuck all of what was going on.

Carlito’s Way - Netflix

A stone cold gangster classic. Pretty simple story about a former crook trying to go straight getting dragged back in by the streets. Brilliant acting all around and a lot more creatively shot than I remembered with a number of scenes using some pretty funky camerawork. Loved it then, love it now, but I think I can appreciate it a little more as a piece of work with older eyes rather than ‘just’ as a cool gangster film.

An easy 5 Benny Blanco from the Bronx’s out of 5.

You’re the first person I’ve heard defend the talents of Katie Holmes.

Top Gun

Watched this last night as the boy wanted to see it before catching Maverick tonight.

I've never been a big fan. Sure, I like the jets, but everything else about it is pretty painful. There's barely a story, everyone's a caricature, Cruise doesn't really have the acting chops to carry it at that point in his career, the pacing is all over the place and the script is more a selection of terrible quotes that don't quite get together.

Looking forward to tonight's show though, I think it addresses most of my issues from what I've read.

Licorice Pizza

Wasn’t totally convinced by the hype around this one.

The look of the era this movie is set, was completely nailed.
Related, principal casting was good and on-brand with good performances - though the idea of dropping in big stars midway through for supporting roles, comes across as industry pandering and a little try hard.

Plot was poor, this movie is more an exercise in atmosphere, setting and nostalgia.

I think enjoyed it?  But wouldn’t see it again.

And if you scrutinise the central love story you may wonder how it ever got made in the first place!

Don't mind Pegg, but Stephen Merchant would have been better. Although Tom Cruise would have needed 14 boxes to stand on during every scene they shared.

I Love My Dad - 3/5 (Screener)

Quirky little gem of a comedy starring Patton Oswalt, who excels as a schlubby father who winds up cat fishing his son, who had blocked him on social media. It doesn't quite stick the landing but is a fun ride, and a pleasingly brisk 90-odd minutes.

Coherence (2014)

Exactly the kind of weird shit happens no-don't-think-about-too-much movie I like.

Eight friends get together for a dinner. Or maybe 16 friends. No, 32. 64. Maybe.

It's been six months and this film is still living rent free (as the kids say) in my mind. I thought it was good at the time, but I clearly didn't give it enough credit.

American Made

It's amazing that a film about a swashbuckling pilot who smuggles arms and people for the CIA and cocaine for Pablo Escobar could be so dull. Even Tom Cruise's star power couldn't save this.

Boring.

1/5

Ooh yeah I watched this one recently and completely agree. It's just....dull. I also found the tone of the thing completely wrong, given the actual real character was a key component in empowering a sociopath to wage war via his cartel and there's a direct line between that and the mess the Cartels cause today.

Kenny - 3/5 (Sky Documentaries)

Obviously the appeal of this doc about Kenny Dalglish will vary depending on how much you like football and who you support. However, think he is one of those players that transcends the sport. The scenes around Hillsborough had me bawling, and renewed my appreciation for what Dalglish did for the city of Liverpool, and it’s namesake club.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s - 3/5 (Sky Cinema)

Ticking off a few classics I haven’t seen this year. Obviously Audrey Hepburn is iconic in the lead role but the film itself is pretty dated. And contains a pretty awful (racist) attempt by a western actor to play a Chinese man. Some lovely cinematography and a memorable payoff but overall not one I’ll remember particularly fondly.

Foreman - 3/5 (Sky Documentaries)

Another interesting sports doc about one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all-time, George Foreman. The doc is centred around his attempt to regain the heavyweight championship belt at over 40 years of age, but goes beyond that with some open and honest talking heads from those who were closely intertwined with Foreman’s career.

Probably my favourite film ever.  It is definitely on a very short list along with The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of The Lost Ark & the original and by far the best Terminator.

The Stepfather 2: Make Room For Daddy (1989)

This is a psychological drama compared to the first which was more a straight up thriller. Terry O'Quinn reprises his role but isn't quite as solidly sinister, though he still plays the part. He escapes from a mental hospital and poses as a psychologist helping women, and inevitably ends up finding a willing woman. It's nowhere near as tight as the first, but somehow works regardless, largely down to O'Quinn's performance and some direction with relish. Well worth it for the final showdown too.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Going to be totally honest, I was hoping the end of the Earth would come a lot sooner than the end of this film, was willing the comet on, because after a dryly amusing first half hour this thing just got worse and worse, drifting further and further away from making a cohesive statement about complacency until even the good guys felt extinction level event worthy. It just couldn't resist getting mawkish towards the end either, preachy. More proof that a stellar cast isn't enough. The photo of the present with Steven Seagal did make me chuckle though, nice detail.

The Princess (2022)

Holy shit, what? I thought this'd be light fare. It's a medieval Die Hard in reverse. The realisation at the start had me laughing for 5 minutes.

Jody King's stunt fighting gets very impressive around the middle.

Great fun. I really enjoyed this.

4/5
