Judy - 3.5/5 (BBC iPlayer)

 

This is not a great film by any means, but I enjoyed it a lot, and if you are interested in Judy Garland at all it’s definitely worth a watch. It immediately highlights what’s wrong with the pedestrian Respect as instead of telling the abc of her life, it tucks right in on the last year or so when she was doing nightclub shows in London to stay afloat, and is much the better film for it. You get the odd glimpse of the embryonic star, and that’s all you need to understand the fading one.

 

Renée Zellweger does a decent turn as the flickering Judy, some of the mannerisms are dead on but she occasionally slips into Bridget Jones territory too. She’s not an amazing singer but not at all bad either, and when she belts it out in the clubs she’s really watchable.

Werewolves Within (2021)

 

New park ranger turns up at mountain town, almost empty due to winter, and everyone gets snowed in just as a werewolf starts killing people. Who could it be? It could you, or you, OR YOU!

Cosy horror, very well done. Loved it.

You're most welcome. I've had this on my list for a while. I was waiting until the wife and I could wtach it together. She hates horror, so finding something that has common ground and wasn't too scary was great.

When you say "wasn't too scary", there was no gore? No jump scares? Sounds silly but I have not done well with even horror comedies. I tried watching Tremors with my wife last month, and she freaked out at the scene where the guy with the sheep is found with just his head left in the ground.

Dashcam (2021)

 

Watched after the discussion on the horror thread.

 

Very good found footage horror, let down a little by the deliberately confusing camera work and inconsistent MC actions. Still recommended though

Oblivion - by The Tom Cruise 

 

It's okay this, but I think it leaves far too much unexplained for too long to give a shit about some of the motives and actions going on. Playing it right to the end was the wrong choice.

A few more 90s movies.

 

Die Hard 2

 

Not my favourite DH (in fact I would rate 1,3 and 4 above it) nor my favourite Harlin movie. It just about works, mainly down to Willis's performance. The first two thirds are definitely better than the last where it falls apart a bit and gets increasingly ridiculous.

Fairytale A True Story

 

Charming British fare about those famous photos from the 1920's of fairies. A great cast (including McGann, Kieitel, O'Toole, Nighy and Peck) work well with a lively script. Even Mel Gibson has a cameo!

The Englishman who went up a Hill but came down a Mountain

 

Another highly enjoyable British film, this one set in Wales. Grant. Fitzgerald and Meaney are all on top form. It works well as a fish out of water story.

Interview with the Vampire

 

An all star cast help to ensure that this is a wonderfully gothic camp film. Despite Cruise getting top billing this is undeniably Pitt's movie. He is pitch perfect as Louis and is in almost every scene. Dunst (who I have seen in a few films over the last couple of weeks) bursts onto the big screen with an unforgettable performance. Perhaps Jordan's best film this is extravagant and has just the right amount of gore. The Paris section is definitely weaker than the rest of the film but is still entirely watchable.

The Silence of The Lambs

 

This adaptation of the chilling novel is cinematic perfection. Some people prefer Cox's version of Lecter but I for one am definitely in the Hopkins camp. Demme has also been accused of going too gothic in the hospital scenes but I find them brilliantly constructed and shot. In fact, I would say this is his best film and one of the best movies to win Best Picture since The Godfather.

Shallow Grave

 

The film that established Boyle as one to watch. Kerry Fox (who?) gets top billing yet it is Eccleston and McGregor who shine in their roles and make the film a bit of a two handed affair. It feels a little basic in its story telling nowadays, yet is still a great watch. The budgetary restraints work well to make the film feel claustrophobic and this adds to the sinister air that pervades the film.

Primary Colours

 

A well made political thriller that apparently is a roman a clef of the Clinton nomination. I never followed Clinton very closely so had no idea this was the case. Travolta shines in the lead role, this being part of his post-Pulp Fiction renaissance. I've you never seen it then this is definitely worth seeking out, although it isn't the subtlest political movie I've ever seen.

The People Vs Larry Flint

 

This completely passed me by back in the 90s. I found it to be a very good film with a true story that is so absurd it defies belief. Effortlessly directed by two time Oscar winner Forman this benefits from very strong performances from all concerned, particularly Harrelson and Love.

Hustle - Netflix (2022)

 

Adam Sandler does a surprisingly good portrayal of a worn out sports agent for the NBA. 

If it hadn't been as by-the-numbers and predictable this could easily have been a new classic but overall very watchable and entertaining.

Watched this last night after the recommendation in the relevant thread. I'd never seen a Bollywood film before ... loved it! Some of the effects are bit shit, but some of the action scenes (particularly the fight choreography) put a lot of Hollywood to shame. It's also a great story. :D
