englishbob
Black Widow - Disney + IMAX edition Quite enjoyed some of it, the dialogue seemed genuine amongst the ridiculousness. 2.5/5 (you could probably add another 1.5 if you like this stuff, I gave up this Marvel lark with Iron Man 2)

I thought it was an awful film.

TehStu
Prometheus (2012) DNF/5 Man, I am struggling with this. I vaguely knew it was divisive, and that it relates to Alien or something, somehow (?), but mostly forgot all that and was just enjoying it until the absolute litany of stupid decisions by characters about a third of the way through. I'll normally watch any old shit while I'm on the treadmill but I'm not convinced this is worth the effort. edit - this prompted me to read a wiki synopsis. Strewth.

Minion
The Souvenir Part II - 4.5/5 Just really fucking good, a film makers film. Some might find it pretentious but I found it very moving and it's great to see a British film actually doing something different with the medium compared to a lot of the typical types of films that come out of our industry. Part I is essential viewing beforehand.
glb
Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off - 4/5 (Sky Documentaries) A look at the life and times of skateboarding’s Birdman. The footage is excellent (and brutal in places), with honest contributions from his family and peers. The focus is very much on Hawk’s career, with only allusions to moments in his private life. Some reviews suggest this is a flaw of the film, but I didn’t have an issue with swerving the more ‘gossipy’ elements, obviously YMMV. Overall I loved it. I’ve never skated but find the culture and a lot of the people involved fascinating. Seeing the levels Hawk pushes to and the physical cost does get addressed; some may find it selfish, others will see the beauty in the pursuit. The side you fall on will likely decide your enjoyment. I found the film to be equal parts thrilling and poignant. The doc also features Rodney Mullen, who comes across as the most chill dude that ever did skate. Smiled every time he appeared, could listen to him all day. (#382)

Sample quote: Rodney Mullen: Tony Hawk won everything; or close to it. That creates so much more pressure because there's no gratification in winning - there's only upholding something so that you don't lose it. And it is staggering. It usurps the joy of it. It's like a Kafka short story. You, you, you... build something but you can't live in the house because you sit around guarding it. He's an elequent man, and, for my money, an astonishing skateboarder.
Darwock
Hawk the Slayer - 0.2/5 I had heard this was so bad it was good? No, just bad. I did like two of the magic effects - the storm of fireballs, which was somebody opening the door and chucking a lot of ping pong balls into the room, and the bad guy that got encased in an impenetrable cocoon of silly string (sprayed straight from the can). For each of those it gets 0.1 points.

Thank you for posting that; I’ve only known him through the Tony Hawk games and a few YouTube clips, so had no idea how interesting he actually is and your post underlines that. I preferred it to Dogtown and Z-boys as it goes into more detail on the people.

It’s about truffle hunters and their dogs in Italy, and every shot is like a painting come to life. A fascinating cast of characters, both human and animal, make this an unmissable dig into a very particular style of rural life. This was magical. RubberJohnny
Fiddler on the Roof - There's very few bits of media out there with a message about respecting tradition, mostly we get the Disney princess individualism, "fuck your parents and your society, go and do your own thing". Well poor Teyve lives in a world where his daughter went off and turned society upside down. It's a good reminder that even though in Western Europe the ripping up of the old gave us the Enlightenment, modern political structures, etc, a few hundred miles further east (this is set near Kyiv) it didn't work out so well. About half an hour too long, but for something over 50 years old, this hasn't aged a bit. 4/5 Naucisaa: Valley of the Wind - This is wonderful, I haven't actually seen any pre-2000s Ghibli tbh, something that I'll now be correcting, I appreciated the ones I'd seen (Spirited, Howl) but they didn't really entice me to seek out more. The world is so imaginative, and you can see that it was really influential on a whole bunch of media since, Final Fantasy, Panzer Dragoon - I mean even the Scarlet Rot from Elden Ring is just the Sea of Decay. A nice little ecological fable that still feels contemporary despite being nearly 40 years old. 5/5
Fierce Poodle
Marvel’s Eternals Fuck me, this is absolute cat shit, a colossal turd of a movie. Even the action scenes are boring as arse. 0/5
fatbob
Nobody 4/5 Bob Odenkirk, Christopher Lloyd and RZA get the band back together to kick chumps through windows and shoot Russian gang sorts in the face for 92 minutes. Ry
Everything Everywhere all at Once - 5/5. Stupid, brilliant, bonkers, funny, inventive, original, sad, sweet. Just an absolute joy and an amazing piece of film-making.
JoeK
God knows why it suddenly appeared in my mind, but I had an urgent desire to watch the original Vampire Hunter D from 1985. Sure, it's not a theatrical movie and it clearly had an animation budget of approximately £5 (or the Yen equivalent), but it's still an enjoyable 70-odd minutes. I mean, it's got ghastly dialogue, absolutely daft fan-service and the story makes fuck-all sense unless you've done a little bit of research on the character, but it's still worth-while giving it a look, because some of the art design is fantastic and holds up really well. I guess because of the budget constraints, there's a real interesting choice of very limited colour palette, and whilst the majority of the animation is fairly basic (I mean, it's standard fare of the period really), there are a few moments where they presumably found a little extra money to use and you get some really cool stuff going on. Anyway, it's a fun thing and worth watching simply to watch in utter confusion when D's hand starts talking and eating things. No, I don't get it either. 3/5
Mr Majestyk
Everything Everywhere All At Once 4/5 - great film, but a point off for the odd part that dragged. teddymeow
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022) A Disney+ original. Directed by Akiva Schaffer and featuring the voices of Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone so it's another The Lonely Island film. It says for 9+ but there are some clever jokes for parents throughout and some fantastically knowing cameos from various animated characters from popular media Spoiler Ugly Sonic was a highlight! The animation is really good and the story moves along at a good pace. 3.5 / 5

ScouserInExile
The Bad Guys Cracker this one. Loved the art style (probably because I'm so used to Disney / Pixar stuff). Full of great characters and voice performances. Really entertaining story. Doesn't go on too long. Might have been a little short, in fact. Just really, really good start to finish. 5/5 all day long.
