You might think - how could they possible make a bad film, with the rich tapestry of characters, family ties and story lines they have to work with?

 

You might also think - It would be great to see how Tony Soprano became…… you know, Tony Soprano.

 

Well they knocked the first one out of the park, with a confusing, poorly paced mess.

 

And as for the second…. “Anthony” is in the film for less than 1 minute in the first 40 minutes of the film. Who/what is this about again?

 

Such a huge disappointment. Almost as disappointing as the fact that cinema is slowly dying. There were four people in there, including me and my friend. I asked the couple what they thought of it, “Yeah, we liked it they said”. “I thought it was rubbish”, I said. “Not enough Tony!”, I said.

 

”Whos Tony?” They said. Which kind of sums up everything that was wrong with the film on so many levels.

I got round to it! I"m not averse to long films (I put down Lawrence of Arabia on a yearly basis), but for some reason I've put off watching this even though its been in my iTunes library for years. It's very good, if not quite the masterpiece I was expecting. I did watch the 3-hour Director's Cut, which may have been part of the issue. I felt it started to run out of steam towards the 2-hour mark, but it did pick up again in the final 30 minutes. It's way more lightly entertaining than I expected, very comical and energetic (at least in the first half). I felt it was less a biopic than a sort of tonal snapshot of a life, and to be honest Salieri was way more interesting than Mozart himself. I never got a feel for why Mozart's compositions were and are considered such works of genius, although this might have buried the movie in dry technicality. There is a scene towards the end where Salieri is helping Mozart pen the Requiem, and here there was a sense of Salieri peeking into the creative mind and being astounded by it, which I really enjoyed.

 

Performances are all great, though a little arch in some cases, but that's the style of the film. Obviously impressive sets and costuming, oh and the score is pretty good.

Tough crowd. Amadeus is a stone cold 5/5 for me. Amazing performances, sets, costumes, funny, sad, epic. Kind of has it all.  Even my kids were mesmerised for the whole runtime…perhaps it wasn’t the 3 hour cut though.

Friday the 13th remake 

 

My only exposure to the FT13th universe. This starts really well and is nice looking. It also has some fantastic boobs in it. But about two thirds of the way through it starts to lose its way and ends poorly with badly a edited climax. Shame as the Performances are very good for the most part.

Nightbreed 

 

Narrative coherence is entirely absent from this odd bit of Barker. Some great ideas but they are chucked with abandon so that what you end up with is the horror movie version of Homers car. I am interested to see the newish directors cut as it apparently fixes some of these issues. Cronenburg is well creepy in his role.

This was…..better I suppose. It starts really well but I found the cabin a boring set and they spend far too long there. Campbell I found equally brilliant and annoying. Raimi is more assured here but I found it less and less interesting as it progressed.

Army of Darkness

 

I found this quite funny and utterly bonkers. My favourite of the 3 films, but still far from classic status. At least it wasn’t set in that bloody cabin!  Reminded me of The Spaceman and King Arthur. 
 

3.5/5  I’ve also stared watching Ash vs Evil Dead which is excellent and more fun than the films IMHO

 

The House of the Devil.

 

This takes an absolute age to get going. Once it finally does it great. But it’s nowhere near as good as the reviews make it out to be. Solid, but unremarkable. Noonan is his usual brilliant self. It’s too restrained for its own good.

Free Guy

 

An NPC in a game heavily inspired by GTA Online with all mods allowed thinks he's real. It all changes when he one day finds his dream girl and decides to speak to her. 

 

To start with the obvious, this was a very silly movie. If you try to make sense of it everything falls apart very early on and it just keep on introducing issues that could've been solved very easily but if you watch it for what it is, a light hearted and fun adventure flick spiced up with some satire it really works. Well, it did for me anyways. 

Ryan Reynolds IS the movie and he steals every scene he's in. I loved that they've put a lot of small gaming related details throughout the movie, and a lot of the funny stuff happens in the background, like players lagging (continuously walking into a wall) or players just jumping all over the place, players who teabag their latest kill and a lot of stupid missions. 

 

Even my wife who isn't into gaming enjoyed this and the youngest kid loved every single moment of it.

Respect

 

 

This was tripe and pays a disservice to such a rich, complex and challenging artist. Talk about kid gloves. Rated 12, the movie can't even begin to explore some of the darker areas of Aretha Franklin's life with any depth. Instead rape, alcohol abuse, misogyny and abuse are treated, and then brushed aside, like Sunday afternoon melodrama beats.

 

It makes for a long, hollow watch (weighing in at 2 hrs 30 minutes) and it's revealing that the real footage of of her during the end credits packs the most punch.

 

There are a couple of good moments, such as when she's coming up with the arrangement for Respect, but the script is anaemic from start to finish.

 

Hopefully a more thorough and penetrating documentary will be made to highlight Aretha's rich and varied life.

The Thing (1982)

 

 

I hadn't watched this for about five years and decided to get the recent 4k release. It still holds up remarkably well, and at almost 40 years old now, the special effects, make-up and prosthetics are still excellent - more tactile and...slimy that anything computer generated could be, certainly compared with the CG that was around back when it was made, but also by modern standards as well. The bit where that guy's head turns into the spider thing and scuttles off should be goofy as hell, and even though there is an element of ridiculousness to it, it's still effective enough to be disturbing.

 

If it loses a star (and I still haven't made my mind up) it's because, at just over an hour and forty minutes, it feels a bit lean, especially compared with modern films. I'm normally one to berate films for going on for too long, but here I could have done with a bit more waiting for the tension to brew. Compared with something like Alien, which came out a few years earlier, things start kicking off a lot more quickly, and the final showdown isn't so much a showdown as it is another excuse to show off the effects before it's suddenly all over. The best bit in the film is the blood testing scene, where the paranoia is at its peak - I could have done with another tense exchange like that to flesh things out more.

 

Still, it's great fun, Morricone's score is timelessly effective, and it's got some grade-A dog acting. A must have for anyone's cinematic sci-fi library.

The Matrix : Kids Edition (Free Guy) - 2.5/5

 

Stupid and silly green screen action. Couple of amusing scenes. Ryan Reynolds being Ryan Reynolds like Ryan Reynolds does in every Ryan Reynolds film. 

 

Kids probably love it. I thought it was OK. 

 

The Grand Budapest Hotel - 5/5

 

Maybe my 4th viewing and I think this might now be my favourite Wes Anderson film, overtaking The Royal Tenenbaums. Its just so wonderful to look at, sweet, sad, wonderly written and bloody hilarious. Ralph Fiennes is just amazing in it.

Every so often I check to see if Netflix has gotten any better at quality control with their film division and am generally left with the same impression. It's like eating at a Weatherspoons,Harvester,McDonald's, (insert your preferred cheap massmarket energy replenishment establishment of choice).

This film is fairly unremarkable, like the vast majority of the Netflix commissioned original 'bloke' films I've seen (Extraction probably being the best one they've made themselves so far). It's not absolute crap, just very nothing special. Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks quite a bit like a young Sigourney Weaver from certain angles at times in this film.

The fact that quite a bit of this film seems to have been filmed in Thailand was interesting as apparently modern cityscapes are so interchangeable, nobody but the locals ever notice 🤣

The 40 Year-Old Virgin (2005)

Attitudes have changed a lot in the 16 years since I saw this first time around. There's material in there that probably wouldn't land in 2021, at its core there's a curious combination of coarse laughs and romance here that despite having some decent laughs doesn't quite work for me. The virgin geek thing was probably bullshit back then, it's hogwash now. The fact he had to give up his passions to "grow up" is frankly depressing. I did laugh more than I thought I would on a second viewing, there are moments of quality humour here. It felt hyper-contemporary for 2005 though, it definitely hasn't aged well on some levels. It may be because I'm 16 years older and my experiences have made me feel differently about sex and relationships.

Dad tries to locate his daughter after an apparent nuclear bomb / disaster. Strangest ending to a film ever... It fades to black during a car chase scene... and ends! WTAF. Should be called "How it doesn't end"  2 / 5

1944 (sometimes subtitled Forced to Fight) 

 

I like a good foreign language war film, and this is a good one. 

 

Set in Estonia during WWII, where men were forced (and sometimes volunteered) to fight for either Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union. Made a bit worse for the ones pressed into the German army - only German citizens could join the regular army, so foreigners were put in the SS. This didn't end well for any who surrendered. 

 

This film follows both sides, starting with the men in the Wermacht and then swapping to the Red Army. Literally for some characters. It explores their motivations, the impact both sides have on civilian life and the difficulties in being forced into fighting against your own countrymen for a cause you don't really believe in. 

 

It well shot with done decent acting, though the lack of budget shows in some battle scenes. 

 

A decent 4/5

Really good fun Creepy and detached and funny and gorgeously shot with some exaggeratedly wide angle lenses like it's parodying Kubrick at times. Loved it!

Galaxy Trucker - 2/5. Might have given it a 3 but a really tenuous grip on how gravity works knocked it down.

 

Superfly - 4/5. Elevated by an incredible soundtrack but still feel this holds up well. Great shots of New York, a reasonable story, even if it tails off a bit, and some seriously tight fashion. Stick it to whitey!

 

The Apartment - 3/5. A really clever premise which does a lot of the legwork, although there is some great dialogue too.

Black Mass - better than expected since it got a pretty poor reception at release. Depp was pretty terrifying (I think it was the scary ice blue contact lenses) at points and everyone else was good. Somehow I never knew that Whitey Bulger's brother was a fucking senator. You couldn't make this shit up.

I watched the Matrix again yesterday. One thing that always annoyed me is when Switch calls Neo coppertop. I always thought "whys she calling him ginger" 

 

Quick Google search brought up this...

I am happy to explain in excruciating detail, I love film and I love being nerdy about it so if you want to know why it is a 4/5 for me then read on

 

I don't chuck 5/5 ratings about very often (ok I am willing to be proved wrong if someone trawls this thread). Matrix to me has a couple of moments that don't quite work for me - here is the short version...

 

1) the bullet time set pieces (Trinity at the beginning) now look a little "of their time" but they are the only fx that date to be fair.

2) The other crew members of the Nebuchadnezzar were very very sketchily drawn. When they die int hat scene (not like this etc...) the film is hoping we feel something but we barely know them, a few scant lines of dialogue isn't enough - the film hasn't earnt it yet. SO those emotional beats fall slightly flat

3) The "Basil Exposition" is a little on the nose and forced - this is a critique of all 3 films but the first is the least egrigious. The morpheus training scenes were a fun way to impart the info but there was too much of it in big chunks and it hit you over the head almost to ladybird book level at times - they didn't give the audience any credit. They could have sprinkled it round better

 

Now those are nitpicks and literally shave off just enough greatness to reduce it to 4/5 for me.

 

As for other films in the "scifi" or "action" genre that I would give 5/5. It is hard to think of parallels... but 5/5s for me are

 

Terminator  (T2 getting a 4 )

Alien

Predator

2001

Bladerunner

The Thing (but then that is horror really as well as scifi and action ish)

SIlent Running maybe (been a while since I saw it so need to re-evaluate!)

Bodysnatchers 78 (ditto)

 

The problem is the film is action and scifi so I have put examples from both as it were.

I'm not surprised, I just said that if a "classic" of a genre is subjectively given a low rating then I'm just curious as to what films in that area they do think of as "classics". I was more thinking of instances where a classic gets a 1,2,3 out of 5 but the examples I thought of were 4s. I guess I am just interested in differing perspectives on classics etc and alternatives. Which is a bit indepth for this thread which is why I said it wasn't the place.

Last film I watched was Netflix's Kate. 2.5/5

There were some really nice looking scenes, the fight choreography was good and I really like Mary Elizabeth Winstead (she deserves better).

The story felt very old hat though and twist was telegraphed in about the first 5 minutes. Also - crap title. I don't like these titles which are just the main character's name, especially when the name is so unremarkable. They should have called it Poisoned to Death or something.

This is a very bad film, don't watch it. Bad acting across the board, clearly cut to shreds in the edit with terrible pacing, a paper thin story and zero comeuppance for bad people that did bad things. It gets a point for being set in 70s New York, which I'm an absolute sucker for. Also, the soundtrack's alright I suppose.

What I Did On My Summer Vacation aka Get The Gringo (2012)

 

Mel Gibson ends up in a cartel run Mexican prison after the Policia take his robbery money. Not an ounce of fat on a slick, well made gangster filled action thriller. Lots of neat moments that made me go hmmm and nod my head at the twists and turns.

Midsommar (2019)

 

Watched with trepidation as I was told if you liked Hereditary you'd like this, and I thought Hereditary was shite.  This was quite good, though. Very 70s British horror out there theme, I appreciated the summer feeling throughout. Bit too long, but that's it.
