Man I need to watch City of God again. I myself have not watched it in over a decade, I remember it as one of the best films ever made.

In the other hand, I just watched....

The new Hugh Jackman film. Reminiscance - 2/5

From 20 mins in all I could think was "damn this is a good premise"

30 mins "Hmmm, this reminds me of other, more well made films by a certain director. But shite"

After an hour "damn, this could have been so much better in the hands of a decent director and scriptwriter, a Dennis Villneuve or Christopher Nolan maybe"

Near the end "yeah, good idea ruined, sloppy writing. Horrible editing. Poor direction"

Credits Roll : Written and Directed by Lisa Joy.

For those not in the know. That's Christopher Nolans sister in law. First time directing. Clearly trying (and failing) to have that Nolan spark.

You just need to watch it to see what I mean.

It looks ands reads like a film she pitched to Christopher and he said "hmmmm na, yer awright mate. You go ahead"

First time director? Who also wrote it? And is Christopher Nolan’s sister in law? Sometimes Hollywood’s nepotism  makes me want to vomit. Watched the trailer and it looks like a mash of other films ideas and action sequences honestly.

Gonna pass.

Goon (2011)

Description for IMDB: Labeled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way.

Seann William Scott is  the  moderately likeable idiot  who becomes an enforcer for a hockey team.   Liev Schreiber is the "baddie" as an ageing Goon  who beats the shit out of people on the ice and he's the best thing in it, there's a laconic menace that he brings to proceedings. It's co written by Jay Baruchel who's also in it as the best mate, given he's a huge Habs fan you'd hope the hockey would be half decent, it's not, and neither the comedy or the drama are particularly good either.

It's alright in a "on in the background" sort of way but I wouldn't be actively seeking it out.

The Endless Summer - 5/5 (Prime)

This is a stunning documentary from the early sixties, young cinematographer Bruce Brown narrates his footage of two surf dudes riding waves and making friends as they travel from the US to Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii in search of the endless wave, accompanied by a delicious Tiki soundtrack.

It’s of its time, and as a consequence fantastic in every respect. The footage is spectacular, and it’s hard not come away from the film feeling like you’ve surfed the world yourself.

Apparently before release Brown used to show the film in school halls without a soundtrack, just him describing events onscreen with a guy playing surfer records. Essentially the birth of global surf culture.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

It's amazing what John Carpenter can do on absolutely no money.  You can spot where he's improvised due to lack of budget but it helps ratchet up the tension even further.

That bit with the girl and the ice cream is still a shock nearly half a century on.  God knows what it must have felt like in the cinema at the time.

Looks gorgeous in the Blu Ray.

Sorry to say but I watched Assault on Precinct 13 last night on the recommendation of this thread, the first time I'd ever seen it, and thought it was poor.  The music is simply the best thing about it.  The acting is terrible, and the script is shocking.

I think its one of those films where if you remember it back in the 70s/80s it would have had the right effect on you, a first time watch in 2021 it doesn't hold up at all.

Amazing that it was released only two years ago.

I reckon there's a story there. The production company that made What Women Want had no other big name movies on their site and were hawking What Men Want for decades. Love to know what happened.

Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace

I decided to do a run through of Star Wars films, starting at episode 1.  It's been some time since I had watched this film, all I could really remember is the pod race, Darth Maul fight being the 'good', jar jar and trade talks being the 'bad'.

Firstly, bloody hell Ewan McGregor looks young!  Somehow younger than he was in Trainspotting!  The film itself though, there were 3 things that stood out for me.  The CGI in places is atrocious, they really didn't need to go over board on using it, but sadly they did.  Jar Jar Binks. What the hell were they thinking? Let's put a stupid talking CGI character in, that would be a good idea🤨.  Not only that, let's put a whole race of them in, just to annoy even more.  Lastly, the script.  My god, it's awful.  It's so stunted, so badly written, no actor could make that shit work.  Many scenes people don't react to what's going on around them either.  Natalie Portman's stupid way of talking as the queen, what was that about? Another dumb decision.

If it wasn't Star Wars it would get a 1, as it is...

1.5/5 (updated score)

One thing I did think though is I could probably introduce my son (5 year old) to Star Wars films with this one easier than I could A New Hope because of the stupid things in it.

He has a time traveling 5 year old son .. interesting!

I get what you are saying but a 5 year old kid is more interested in what's going on in front of him than a coherent story line.  I'm not planning on watching them back to back with him, just noticed this one being particularly daft would be easy watching for a 5 year old.

The Predator

Oh dear. Not a fan of this at all, zero tension and a terrible cast. The plot is crap after the first 45 minutes and it just isn't much fun at all. Those opening 45 minutes are at least watchable, but after that it just goes further and further downhill. By the last 20 minutes I was more interested in looking at my phone than what was happening on the screen. Preadators remains my favourite of the sequels.

1.4/5

Young Guns

Most definitely not a good film, but nostalgia plays a good part in my enjoyment of it. Sutherland and Stamp are both excellent (as usual) and it zips along at a good old pace and has a nice sense of place. Some excellent cinematography. Awful score though which is modern and tonally doesn't fit at all.

4/5

Young Guns 2

This adds Slater and that bloke from Manhunter. It also asks an interesting question about a chap who came out of the New Mexico desert in 1950 and claimed to be Billy the Kid. Was he the Kid? Seems he may have been.

Its mainly more of the same which is no bad thing IMHO.

People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan

This is the epitome of average. There are some lovely touches of character humour and the story feels authentic enough to carry you along but the comedy never rises above the odd chuckle. There's something just a bit too obvious about most of the gags and it doesn't have an ending either.

However, the repressed friendships between the crew give it an unexpected heart and I enjoyed it for what it was.

Episode 2 - Attack Of The Clones

What can I say..... This is far better than the first but Anakin doing his whiney bitch thing literally all the way through it seriously grates!

The script is better, the CGI is better, Jar Jar is barely in it and the fights scenes are good (Yoda hobbling over to fight gave me goosebumps!).  However, the constant letching of Anakin over Padame borders on obscene and the fact the two of them marry after that makes little to no sense.  Even his creepy skeletor hand at the end makes me shiver!

I'm giving this 2.5/5 and dropping the score of Phantom Menace to 1.5.

Attack of the Clones was the very last Star Wars film I saw. Didn’t bother with any of the newer ones after that.

You should at least give The Last Jedi a try. It's universally agreed to be the best Star Wars movie since 1980! :eyebrows:

Alien Covenant 3/5

interesting ideas very clumsily delivered. I can’t believe the stupidity of the Billy Crudup death scene and the totally bad pacing of the space crane scene.

Man creates robot.

robot kills man

robot creates alien

alien kills everything

ridley kills franchise

The Night House

Rebecca Hall's husband offed himself and now she's alone in the house and spooky things are happening. Slow-paced, meditative horror that plays with a lot of different possible interpretations - it's the kind of film where you're half unsettled and half trying to piece together what it all means. The ending seems to land decisively on one interpretation to the exclusion of all others which is a bit disappointing, but I guess the other ideas are still in there if you want them. There's also an over-reliance on sudden loud noises, a device I never enjoy and which feels particularly unnecessary in a film that already has plenty of subtler, more interesting scares. (I particularly enjoyed the "two faces / a vase" moment.) I don't think I knew who Rebecca Hall was before this but she's incredibly charismatic and compelling in a complex, demanding role. Feels like a star-making moment for her. The best "elevated horror" (blergh) film at least since Hereditary, probably longer, even if it falls slightly short of the classic it could've been.

The Art of Self Defence (On Netflix till 3 Sept)

This has been on my watch list for a while and given it’s about to disappear from Netflix gave it a go last night.

Darkly amusing, well acted, very brown and a surreal/parallel universe vibe to the whole thing. Suggest going in blind as whilst we kind of saw where it was going it was still an interesting ride.

4/5
