You were never really here - 4/5

Good. Feel like I need to watch it again.

Might have been the mumbliest film I've ever seen. For every three lines of dialogue spoken I understood maybe one of them.

Bad Lieutenant (the 90s one) - 4/5

First time seeing it in years. Bit hackier than I remember. The scene where he has a wank onto those two motorists is still gold though.

The Wrestler - 4/5

I didn't get all the fuss about this at the time. Upon second viewing I think I get it a bit more now. Good show.

A Quiet Place (2018)

Whilst their latest family planning choices are somewhat foolish given their circumstances, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are excellent in this thriller/horror in which I wasn't asked to turn the volume down by my girlfriend who went to bed early.

A cool idea, a cool execution with plenty of suspense.  Ticked all the boxes for me.

Within

Vaughan has left Sydney and shacked up with a very attractive younger lady. He appears to have had Starlight as a love child when he was younger. Meanwhile, Stig of the dump is hiding in the house and occasionally comes out to scare everybody.

Vaughan looks like he needs feeding up and in the end Stig goes a bit mental, there are quite a few deaths

The Shining

First time watching it on the big screen, in a new remastered version. Looked amazing. Still stands out as a classic psychological horror film. I loved noticing this time round the sound of what Jack is actually typing right from the start when you see him at his typewriter. And still one of the very best, "Oh shit!" moments in cinema.

First Man

Doesn’t tell you a whole lot more about the Apollo 11 mission that you probably already don’t know but Jesus, does it show how fucking dangerous space flight actually is.

For all the criticism that gets thrown at Gosling, I found his performance to be very moving, especially at the end.

Joker.

So close to a 5 out of 5 for me. Just thought there was one bit towards the end that would have been been better off implied rather than actually showing it.

Spoiler

Should have left the part out after the Wayne's leave the showing of Zorro and then head down the alley with thug watching

Other than that I was captivated.

Joker

I really need to watch it again to come to a definitive conclusion as I'm not sure if it is a great film or just a collection of great scenes. JP was amazing and it was nice to see De Niro actually acting again.

Hotel Transylvania 2

much to my surprise I really enjoyed this. It's fun, well paced and has some fantastic animation. Great voice cast to.

Venom. 3.5/5

Excellent visuals and some actual character development in a superhero movie. Quite a few lols. Ending was a bit flat.

Includes a half point for audio because I could understand what Tom Hardy was saying for once.

Fist Fight

This has got so many bad reviews, so I was expecting a bit of a turkey, but this  made me laugh way more than expected. Ice T as a hard as nails teacher with anger issues who challenges every timid fellow teacher -  Charlie Day - to a fight after school made a perfect Sunday afternoon film. My partner is a teacher and I think she took too many tips from this....

Thought it was very funny!

Hellboy (the new one) - 1.5/5 - Really disappointing. Should have rewatched one of the first two rather than watch David Harbour be a bit uncomfortable for a couple of hours. A shame, as it could have been good as the idea of the underlying Nimue plot wasn't too bad as far as these things go. Sadly everything else around it was all over the bloody shop.

Detective Pikachu - 4/5 - Whereas this was surprisingly brilliant. Expected more of a little kids film, didn't get it, and found it really funny throughout as Ryan Reynolds delivery couldn't have been better. Still get a smile on my face thinking about it, sheer fun.

Singin' in the Rain

What a wonderful feel good film this is. It had me smiling from the very begin and that didnt let up throughout. It's funny, witty, has great characters and full of fantastic song and dance pieces.

He-Man & She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword

As a kid I used to love this. It was He-Man and She-Ra and all their crew/enemies all together in one film. What was there not to love?

Fast forward 25 years later and I'm watching this with my daughter and it does not hold up well at all. It's all over the place, incoherently skips from scene to scene and the voice acting for some of the characters is terrible.

Nostalgia did not win out today with this one.

3 From Hell

After the crazy Texas Chansaw rip off House of 1000 Corspes and the more grounded B movie sequel The Devil Rejects, Rob Zombie returns with the 3rd film about the infamous Firefly family.

Sadly he should have left it alone with TDR and that brilliant ending. Captain Spalding being killed off in the first 5 minutes was shit as hes easily the best character and now we're left with a carbon copy of Otis in his half brother to make up the the "Three". (That's not really a spoiler, the trailers pretty much let it be known Spaldings not around)

It's clear that Zombie had a hard on for these characters as he tries to paint them as antiheros and almost superhero like (I mean how the fuck did they survived the end of Devils Rejects?). He films in it in such a way that we're clearly meant to route for them, but it fails miserably. They just arent likeable characters in any way shape or form.

Its poorly written, lazy and it looks like Zombie learnt some new directing/editing skills that hes thrown in here, but unfortunately no one told him they were shit.

I've always avoided Rob Zombie films. Are any worth bothering with?

I quite like The Devils Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses has a certain "charm" to it. They arent great films though so you're probably not missing much other than the brilliant Captain Spalding character,  but that's all down to the actor rather than Zombies direction.

Terminator Dark Fate:

Spoiler

An enhanced Justin Beiber is sent back in time to save a focus group approved strong ethnic woman from a Terminator so evil that it is black. Unfortunatly Justin has some futuristic diabetes, but fear not because Zelda from the Terrahawks and "Carl" (who is still around because time travel, and inexplicably looks like a 70 yer old man) are here to help!! Carl is still hard as fuck but has swapped his killing machine programming for a love of haberdashery and a strange affliction where there is a 68 percent chance that he thinks he is Ziggy from Quantum Leap

Plodding action, familiar beats from the first two Terminator films and a final 35 mins that was seemingly filmed using the same lighting team as one of the latter game of thrones episodes all seals this cruddy, cynically made excuse for a film.

Carrie - both movie versions

1 - Spacek version

I haven't seen this in 20 years. It's much better than I remember, if not a patch on the book. A great cast helps to elevate De Palmas already excellent direction to make this a minor masterpiece.

4.5/5

2 - Moretz version

This is actually really good, if a little more teen friendly.  CGM has been better, and doesn't come across as well as Spacek. But the ending plays out a little closer to the book and Moore is riveting as the Mom.

Tintin - The Secret of the Unicorn (2011)

Really enjoyed this and love the CGI style.  Good fun, hope they do Destination Moon/Explorers on the moon next.

4/5

The Ring (2002)

Thought I'd try this as it's quite highly thought of but TBH I didn't get on with it at all.  Found it a bit dull - nothing gripped me about it at all.

Extra Ordinary

An Irish Comedy/Horror (70/30 split) about a driving instructor with super-natural abilities and some spooky stuff in a rural village. Quite gentle with some laughs and good characters.

Acting was a little Am-Dram in places. Reminded me of Wellington Paranormal in tone.

Yes, I guess you mean the US version of Ring? I can't even bring myself to watch it. I imagine it's as bad as the US remake of Old Boy.

Do watch the original though. Superbly affecting.
