Between Two Ferns: The Movie: Some of the plot bits don't work, but the actual interviews are superb. The "Pre Joe Shitters" has already become a favourite expression in casa Treble - 3½/5

 

The Bye Bye Man: One of those you ask yourself, "How bad can it be?" then astonish yourself with how bad a film can actually be. Just ludicrously badly written, poorly acted and totally without originality or scares (it's aimed at tweens and has about as much kick as that implies). Worst film i've seen in many a long year - ½/5

Little Evil

 

Ben from Parks and Rec has a step son who is the antichrist.  Shouldn't be funny but I actually really enjoyed this!  Pretty much Shaun of the Dead v The Omen - worth a look - a great silly film for a Sunday night.

A well-made, well-acted but still mostly a by-the-numbers crime tale. Felt it needed a bit more directorial sass to match the on-screen performances. I, Tonya is a comparable film quality-wise, but that also had much more distinction in its presentation.

Bloody hell, this doesn't hold back - absolutely brutal at times.  Some scenes really are horrendous.  A good film, worth a look.

Crawl

 

A simple film about a hurricane, a crawlspace and some particularly feisty alligators. I really enjoyed it, but it might have been heightened somewhat by the actual typhoon rattling our windows and throwing things around outside at the time.

The Martian

first of all, Maaaaaatt Daaaamon is just so fucking likeable. You get a sneaking suspicion that he's just playing Matt Damon, on Mars. A bit like George Clooney in Gravity. But that doesn't matter. Because this is Robinson Crusoe as sci-fi. And lets be honest, what's worse that being left entirely alone? So it's a great story, well told. Proper science-fact. With added Sean Bean. I had to check why the <plot device> was on Mars, mind.

 

Better than Ghosts of Mars/Red Planet/Mission to Mars

Equal to The Martian Chronicles (The Rock Hudson version) and Total Recall (the Arnie version)

First rewatch in a while. Such a lean, unflinching thriller. A near-perfect mix of casting, screenplay, soundtrack and directing. A great example of the beauty of showing, not telling. Hollywood needs more mature tales like this one.

So boring. I usually love films that play with this idea but I wasn't thrilled by this film for even a second, and it was so predictable. It was fine for a Sunday evening though when I didn't really feel in the mood to think about anything. 

 

Call Me by Your Name - 4/5 

 

Loved this, beautiful and sad. Hadn't realised it was part of a trilogy so going to watch the other two now!

Finally got round to watching this after @Dark Soldier recommended it so highly on here ages ago. Fantastic film. Up there with the best of Korean cinema.

 

The lead Won Bin was set for mega stardom in South Korea after this. He hasn't done anything since, almost 10 years later. He has just done high paying TV adverts every year in SK instead of any acting roles.

That’s such a shame. Do you know if the director went on to anything else worth watching?

Judy - 2/5. My other half wanted to go see this. It doesn't help that I can't stand Renee Zellweger, but the film itself glosses over large parts of Judy Garland's life and focuses on her last year. It's overly mawkish and not very good in general. Watch Stan And Ollie instead.

His earlier film Cruel Winter Blues is pretty good. I thought No Tears For the Dead which he released after The Man From Nowhere was poor. It mega flopped in SK too which set him back alot. I've not seen his police film from earlier this year but it didn't have very good reviews.

Yeah, The Dawning Rage is pretty mediocre. I wouldn't go out of your way to see it.

 

I took my daughter to see his Doraemon movie and quite enjoyed that, though.

I’d maybe give it a 3 on account of Renee Zellweger’s great performance and wonderful singing voice but yes, I agree with your assessment here - mawkish doesn’t even begin to describe it. The only thing missing at the end was Judy sprouting angel wings and ascending to heaven.
 

Stan and Ollie is indeed the better movie and Judy really suffers by comparison.

Yes, I winced at the start when I saw the certificate was a 12. To be fair Zellweger was terrific but the kids glove treatment let this down badly. For such an interesting character this was strangely lacking in drama.
