Between Two Ferns: The Movie - 3/5

 

Making the duration brief (82 minutes) saves the film, as even in that short time it starts feeling stretched. But when it’s funny it’s very funny, keeping things the right side of welcome. Silly, easy watch. Decent outtakes during the credits too.

no seriously. This film just goes on and on. (Apparently it's a remake of a French film, adding 40 minutes to the originals runtime.)

 

don't get me wrong. any one of the individual acts/scenes is pure Cameron/Schwarzenegger synergy. It has the horse/hotel scene. It has a great turn by Paxton. It has a scene on that there Seven Mile Bridge (See also: Licence to Kill and  Chesapeake Bay Bridge in MI:3). It's full of great parts.

 

Not a big fan of the misogyny (witness malik slapping Carrera, harry deceiving his wife etc) but I guess they're plot points.

The Little Hours - 4/5

 

Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly and Fred Armisen. Nuns. Donkeys. Big hairy merkins. What's not to like?

 

It is one and one half hours long. Tempted to bump it up to a 5/5 for this fact alone. 

 

It's on Netflix. 

 

Safety not Guaranteed - 2/5

 

More Aubrey Plaza sadly though this was soppy shite.

Small Town Crime - 2/5

 

Really disappointing given the mostly positive reviews. Found the film off tonally, such as strange use of incidental music in places that don’t match the thrust of the scene. John Hawkes gives a dedicated performance albeit as a pretty unsympathetic character. Supporting cast is a mix of try-hards and miscasting, bar Octavia Spencer, who’s supporting effort reminded me a Christopher Lee quote: “Every actor has to make terrible films from time to time, but the trick is never to be terrible in them.”

Eighth Grade - 4/5

 

Just a (mostly*) lovely film. Elsie Fisher is so, so natural as Kayla that the film often feels like a documentary about middle school life. Heart-warming.

 

*

Was so relieved Kayla found her voice in the car scene; was terrified the film was about to take an awful turn.

After this great write up I put The Little Hours on

 

I gave up about 20 minutes in. I must be too old, but What the actual Fuck? Not my cup of tea at all, I reckon if I did get to the end it could have been a new contender for worst movie of all time.

If everyone liked the same shit the world would be a very boring place. Would suggest maybe giving it a another fifteen twenty minutes though. I was thinking "what the fuck is this shit?" for the first fifteen twenty minutes myself. First twenty minutes are just setting the seven basically. It gets a lot better. If you still aren't liking it forty minutes in you could call it at that point.

Got this from CEX a couple of days ago as I've intended to watch this for quite a while. Much effort seems to have gone into the look and feel of the film, the music is over the top cool and the makeup very impressive. Sometimes it has average teen comedy and the menace towards the end just became silly, while some of the actors eventually get on your nerves but overall its a fun watch.

 

The worst thing about The Lost Boys is the version of people are strange that plays on the intro and the outro. Annoys me 100% of the time.

Cut Throat Nine – A weird early-seventies Spaghetti Western video nasty. When released in the cinemas you had to pick up a 'horror mask' in the foyer in case the lurid kaleidoscope of depravity was too much for your once innocent eyes. I think in reality they had a pretty serviceable tale of struggle in the frozen wastes, but then someone chucked in a load of jump cuts to people having their heads hacked off or being burned alive. The atmosphere is truly bleak and there is a genuinely great set-up hidden in there somewhere, but the editing is all over the place so it struggles to keep any tension. Predictably the violence looks a bit shonky by any standard, which I guess is a consequence of it being shot on a budget of about 20 lira.

 

I may give it another go as there's definitely something to it, but my soul was left disappointingly uncorrupted.

 

2 ragu sauce wounds out of 5.

It's good and funny. I liked Juggernaut being the actual character rather than being Vinny Jones. It was good fun. Brilliant cast, brilliant script. I imagine the writers having a great time writing this. Good stuff. Was it better than the first? I don't care.
