That’s totally fair, my issue really is with the “oh no, Han is in danger” scenes where we know he’ll survive. They feel like padding. In this there’s scenes where Leia is in danger with ominous music that serve literally no purpose. I guess they’re aimed at people who haven’t seen Star Wars? But I can’t imagine this being much fun for them.

There’s a line in Star Wars where they say everyone who got the plans died. And the entire finale of rogue one is what they seem to think is a tense race to do a thing that we already know they’re going to do. They’re putting dramatic music over scenes of people just barely grabbing a box that the plot of the most famous film ever made hinges on them grabbing.

You’re thinking of Return of the Jedi. Those were the plans for Death Star 2: Bothan Boogaloo.

Sorry mate. I don't know of the site, it was just the top result on google when I searched referencing the tweet!

Yeah, I saw you retracted, fair enough. Probably best not to believe stories you read on sites you've never heard of before.

I’m struggling with the whole Leia story line I must be honest, because in the context of her message to Obi-Wan in Episode 4 it makes no sense and undermines one of the most famous and iconic lines in cinema history. Same with meeting Vader, it just doesn’t make any sense. Maybe they’ll go back and change all the original films to fit the new story.

If anyone is looking for some critical analysis, I really liked this. (Apologies if it's already been posted.)

Thanks for posting this!

A bunch of baddies arrive on Tatooine looking for Jedis. They’re led by an officious alien named The Grand Inquisitor. He’s “grand” in the UK sense, not the Irish sense (i.e., “How’s his inquisiting?” “It’s grand.”).

How does it undermine Star Wars? I can’t remember the message she sends, but isn’t it just “help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope”?

She says that he served her father in the clone wars (which I think was retconned by the prequels) and that she now needs his help. The tone of the message makes it pretty clear that she’s never met him before. She also doesn’t mention to Luke and the others that he’s her old buddy Ben and comforts Luke when he dies without mentioning that she knows him. And I think she sees him fight and isn’t like “oh hey it’s my old buddy who I knew well when I was a kid”. Her knowing him is in pretty direct contradiction of the original movie.

Doesn't she say "Ben Kenobi is here?!" When she first meets Luke which implies some degree of familiarity?

And "help me, Obi Wan, your my only hope" implies a personal connection. If she'd never met him she'd probably direct it to the greater cuase "your the rebellions only hope"

Vader meeting Obi Wan is far worse as their dialogue does imply they haven't met since Vader as a pupil and Obi Wan a mentor.

Leia didn't really react that much when her entire planet blew up so I think she is just a stone cold bass ass when it comes to people dying.

As if by inconvenient magic!

As a disclaimer, I do follow this chap on youtube, he might be considered a little "right wing" by rllmuk standards, but his points, and critique are always reasoned, and thought out with justifications.

I've never felt that. The series might upend my view on the line, but I always felt it was that Vader was totally beaten by Obi Wan's superior skills with the force and made him look like a right noob.

Wasn't that the one where the emperor specified greater visibility at the back?

Although in Jedi  he says “Obi-Wan once thought as you did” when Luke mentions turning him back to the light.

Which didn’t quite lineup with how Ep 3 ended.

I'm confused what encounter are you talking about here?

Thought you were referring to ANH, "I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner, but now I am the master."

That used to bother me, along with why doesn’t he remember R2, but ultimately I realised it didn’t matter that much when weighed against getting more epic Star Wars moments, characters and worlds to enjoy. My days of being all “but what about the sacred texts” are far behind me.

If this is the kind of youtube content you're watching it's really no surprise that you're being racist.

Will also explain why the racist site he first quoted was top of his Google search. Quite the self-own from him there.

Episode 4

Spoiler

A videogame level. Not much to that. Didn’t really feel like we moved much forward now that it’s apparent the Leia mission is the show and of course she was going to be recovered unharmed.

I half thought they’d have the balls to show Jar Jar’s corpse in the tomb.

It’s only part of the bigger message which implies no personal connection or that they’ve ever met each other before (imo).

General Kenobi. Years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the Rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope. [looks to the side quickly, then crouches to end the message]

We know from the end of ROTS how memory-wipe-happy her stepdad is. By the end of this series she'll be like "Ben Kenobi? Never heard of him."

They could solve all these continuity issues with that thing from men in black. Leia doesn’t remember obi wan because her memory was wiped. The emperor wiped vaders mind after this show. Obi wan wiped Luke’s mind and told him he’d been living in the desert but actually he’s been off on adventures with young Han Solo. Yoda was actually in a new hope but he wiped our memories of it at the end.

Does this thing work on Attack of the Clones?

I think you could interpret that message from Leia as meaning she's never met Kenobi before, but I'd say you could easily interpret it the other way too. There's nothing that makes it certain either way. It seems like a formal message sent by a member of the feudal ruling body that Lucas always seemed to want to portray as hidebound by protocol and arcane customs.

And besides, later on in the film when Luke rescues her, as people have said, Leia's reaction to Luke saying "Ben Kenobi sent me" is "Ben Kenobi?! Where is he?", which suggests she's familiar with him. And she uses his nickname / nom de guerre, rather than the formal Obi-Wan she sends in her initial message.

Just a 30 minute episode this week. A nice, if predictable little romp. A few jarring TV quality bits again but I think they're caused by a bit of an uncanny valley effect. The visual style of this does a great job of bridging the prequels and original series and I think that makes me watch it with a movie hat on. When you compare it to standard action TV fare the production values are great.

Spoiler

There's no way back for third sister now, surely. I'd be really pleased with that. Everyone on here being all "she can't be evil, she doesn't have scars" was depressing, even though I know it's a lore thing. Heavy facial scarring, speaking as someone with a fair bit of it myself, is a fucking annoying trope. Be nice if we can get to a point where I don't instil fear in kids in supermarkets.

I really didn't understand the point of the tomb and can't see how they make it relevant with two episodes left. Whose body might they have been hinting at? Rear Windu? Was it a a shout out to the Clone Wars series or something?

Jar Jar isn't dead.  In the new canon book that builds up to Episode VII (so, set after episode VI) Jar Jar is essentially a washed up street performer who has been ostracised by his people.  I almost felt sorry for him.  Almost.

Anyway - another good episode IMO - even if they took a few cues from Episode IV and even the Fallen Order game.  Loved how PISSED Vader was at the end.  Definitely the best performance yet from Moses Ingram (whose performances so far have been absolutely fine IMO).  Leia also becoming less annoying by the episode.

As for the tombs - the start of the cloning of the force sensitive as a build up to what ultimately became Snoke....?

Absolutey loved episode 4!!

Spoiler

I started cheering the moment the lights went out in the Interrogation Room and the next 10 minutes or so was just fucking glorious. Obi-Wan being a Jedi again, like its no big thing, cool as you like, slicing and deflecting, not breaking sweat, badass! There were a few shots that just KNEW how important a moment that was for people and McGregor was as brilliant as ever.

However, I'm not one for picking at plot holes but why the fuck Leia wasnt immediately brought to Vader after the Third Sister grabbed her is a contrivance too big even for me. I get why they dont even try to explain it (because its completely inexplicable behaviour of course) but don't centre your plot around key characters if you dont have a plausible way of linking their actions to established events from the future, especially when what you DO get them to is absolutely ridiculous.

It made me concerned with just how close to the line things are treading now given the things we know are to come, but I still have faith they wont completely jump the shark with how they tie it all together.

Spoiler

Liked seeing how Kenobi is gradually getting his groove back.

The carbon-copy of the water corridor escape from FO was a bit blatant.

Honestly, you'd think once would be enough for the empire to reconsider having so many windows.....but then they never do anything about handrails either.

Oh, also at the end I was genuinely hoping the inquisitor was ballsy enough to just flat out LIE to vader about a tracking device, just to buy some time.

Episode 4.

Leia is wonderful in this episode. With a youngling myself I didn't like the idea of what could happen during!

Really good performances from everyone here, I've no idea why people are so annoyed about this. It's great!
