MiSTer: FPGA gaming

@goenon - This is a long standing issue. There's nothing you can do about it other than a cold reboot and then reload the core. It's annoying when it happens, but thankfully it doesn't happen all that often.

Has anyone had their SD card corrupt when moving it between the MiSTer and the PC?

I just had the SD in my PC and when I went to eject it, it said it was being used. I hadn’t done anything on the card, only confirmed the Wi-Fi script was in the scripts folder so I selected to continue with ejecting. Put the SD card in the MiSTer - nothing! Wouldn’t even power up. Put it back in the PC and it said the SD was corrupt and needed to be formatted.

I’ve done the format now and got it back but it made me wonder what happened when it was in the PC the first time, and how to avoid it happening again?

Me again, has anyone messed with the X68000 core?

I got a couple of HDD game images but I can’t get it to stop loading the game up when booting the core, even after a full reset of the system. I know you have to eject the disks in order to stop the floppies reloading but there’s no option for not booting the HDD game.

I have one, but it’s a bit older than your model so a bit more barebones aesthetically. It’s the main way I play Mister these days.

They’re not quite plug and play.

The secret sauce of a Mistercade is a curated set of config files that correctly map arcade buttons for all the arcade and console cores.

Has anyone used the MiSTercade? I've bought and put together one to put inside this cab I've managed to buy and was looking for tips. Is it just plug in and play, once the software setup is done?

Having previously had 3 MiSTer setups (back when they were a little cheaper!) and getting rid of them MiSTercade is the thing that bought me back into the fold. With the remote board it feels the closest thing to running my PCBs. I still have boards but I like the hardware solution of pressing a button to get into the OSD, feels like a board test switch. I don't have any joystick commands set as it throws me out of thr experience.

I found it to be plug and play, except you might have to dial the brightness in. I use Emphatic's guide to recalibrate my MS9s when needed. Enjoy.

Bleh didn’t realise this thing doesn’t just write game saves automatically. Guess I’ll be doing all those Kuru Kururin levels again then. No bad thing.

I’ll be turning autosave on for all cores now. I was thinking it will be a pain remembering to bring up the OSD in order for saves to write but actually that’s going to be the natural thing to do anyway when done with a game.

I’m trying really hard not to spend all my time dicking around with scanline options and such. I’m not convinced by most options so far.

Got the Next core working which is a really nice thing to have on there.

Lovely thing isn’t it?

Yeah it's pretty much a dream.

I've 'lost' the odd game save from forgetting to trigger the write after a session, but keep it manual to help minimise wear on the card, as paranoid as that may sound.

I'm thinking most of some SNES games that continuously write data to SRAM when running, and how particularly inconvenient it'd be to have to redo a corrupted MiSTerFPGA SD card, but maybe I've killed more SD cards than the average file hoarder, perhaps.

Anyway my most recent wow moment was when I ended up using the GBA core - Rhythm Tengoku / Rhythm Heaven Silver - to test out digital optical audio for the first time.

I'd never heard GBA and this game in particular sound so rich and clear - most likely because other varieties of real GBA hardware I've experienced it on have all been inherently noisy as hell - but I found it slightly gobsmacking nonetheless.

I just can't envisage a better solution for my needs.

I’ve been playing Soukyugurentai on the PSX core and it’s really nice.

Also been hammering one of my all-time favourite arcade games - Shao-Lin’s Road. What’s the reason that it uses the alternative “Kicker” ROMs rather than Shao-Lin’s Road?

Most of my dream cores are present or incoming / being worked on.

Jotego's got a Splatterhouse and he's said it's definitely going to be a core.

Atari's Road Blasters and Paper Boy appearing would make me very happy, but I think those boards contain complex custom chips that represent a lot of punishing work, so I can only hope.

Ninja Baseball Bat Man is coming thanks to the Irem M92 core - another holy shit I can't believe this is a real game game.

Can't wait to play NARC again since the last time probably 30 years ago, but I don't think it'll run on a regular consumer CRT so I'll cross that bridge when I have to.

Can someone explain this for my tiny mind…?

So I’ve been looking at some of the arcade stuff and I noticed stuttering on some vertical games (out zone instantly springs to mind). I read that where there’s a v-sync less that 60hz there’s a stutter as my monitor runs at 60hz and in the case of out zone it’s running at around 55hz

I also read (as I understand) that this could be offset by adjusting the v-sync setting, however messing with the v-sync numbers in the options I couldn’t see any difference and the stuttering was still occurring.

Have I understood this right? Does adjusting the v-sync value stop the stuttering of a game that’s running less than 60hz on a 60hz monitor?

If not, other options are available to stop this stutter?

Did you reset the game after changing the setting?

Changing a game’s vsync setting might affect the speed it plays at as older games had their logic tied to vertical sync hence the stutter.

You could try changing the vsync adjust setting in the ini file but your TV might freak out at the signal.

I did both.

The thing is I didn’t really feel like I saw any different at all, regardless of if I selected 1 or 7. I almost considered it not to be working but then I thought it wouldn’t be there as an option if it didn’t work.

So I figured I was misunderstanding what was being said.

Is it just simple maths, so if the game is running at 55hz then you should adjust the v-sync to 5 if running on a 60hz monitor?

Is anyone having issues with the Xain'd Sleena arcade core?  I just get coloured horizontal bars when I fire up the core.  Any tips on how to fix it?

Mine works fine. Have you tried a cold reboot?

Also there seems to be 2 versions of it in my list, so you could try both sets.

Got a GCon45 and PlayStation SNAC in the post today so it’s time for my half assed arcade recreation thanks to the PlayStation core!

One glaring omission from the arcade cores is the 1983 Star Wars arcade.

Id love to see Starforce and Juno First.
