Laine, its just a shame some customers couldnt be like you, having people come in for their weekly moan, theres no need to take out your problems in someone in a store, they think they'll get better service, but often they dont if they upset the staff with the swearing etc.

There's a pretty good guy in Princes Street, Edinburgh GAME. When I rattled off a list of a half-dozen games I was considering, he basically gave me a couple of pros and cons of some of them and stated that, bascially, Mario and Luigi was probably the best choice because it's simply so damn addictive, quirky and enjoyable.

He then said that, should I get addicted and finish it in a couple of days, I should use the ten day guarantee to get one of the other games I was contemplating.

Top bloke.

If I were a Game store manager I would see that as worse than being rude to the customers.

I get the point. I guess they're just used to it.

Just last year I kept to-ing and fro-ing about buying Sonic Advance, returning it just to buy it again a week or so later (in the end I just got Yoshi's Island, and kept it). Because you can't reset the Chao garden, I imagine there are dozens of my virtual pets out there.

I didn't enjoy working in GAME very much, but I worked damn hard.

ALWAYS with a smile, ALWAYS doing the best for the customer, ALWAYS being polite, helpful and generally fabulous. ALWAYS.

I don't care if you only earn £5 an hour (I was on less than that) or you don't like it, you have to have respect for the job and yourself.

If you walk around all day with a face like a smacked arse and not giving a damn, you'll make it worse for yourself.

If your day is going crappy, just do something about it.

Make yourself care, and be proud of your work.

I take the same attitude to my "AMAZING" retail job. I'll admit, there have been occasions where my service has been poor, and, I've kinda felt bad for it afterwards.

Now then, here's the thing... I've also misinformed customers. At the time, what I thought I was saying, was right. It has only been after when I've been informed, or found out from somewhere, that I've actually told a customer the wrong thing. So, maybe someone went on a tangent about me on an electrical goods forum

When shopping though, I seem to have a very, very high tolerance to poor service. Maybe its because I kind of know what they have to go through. Still not an excuse though, but, it doesn't really bother me. I don't enjoy even going into shops anymore.

Same here.

I probably haven't been super polite with some people, but that's only when they are trying to return an "unused" Xbox that looked like it had been dipped in flour and the games had been used to sand down a forest worth of trees, or dealing with a 8 year old swearing at me becasue I won't sell him GTA.

I've also got things got wrong too, such as oh no, thats game is PS2 exclusive, sorry. Then 6 months later it arrives on something else and the cutomer accuses you of lying! Well you know, 6 moths ago it WAS an exclusive!

I always have lots and lots of patience when I'm shopping now, I see staff all flustered and stressed, maybe making a mistake or being a little slow and I just give them a big smile and tell them not to worry. It's not worth it to bitch about it on forums, give them a break.

Are some of you really saying you've never done anything wrong, ever?

Liars!

I remember when I was working for a games company in Cambridge, one of artists went into our local Game to have a look at the (then brand new) GBA SPs.

Out of nowhere, he was told by one of the assistants (who was demonstrating the SPs) about how there was a top secret Nintendo cell in Cambridge (refering to us). Not only didn't he know how the hell to prononce our name, he went on to proclaim we were working on a revolutionary FPS for the GC...and he had seen it! With his own eyes! Because his friend was working on it!

Our artist came back to the office laughing it off but, if it had been me in the shop, I would have made sure as many people as possible heard about the lies this guy was spreading. Not knowing about the US/Jap scene, or being able to recite release dates on command I can understand, but making up lies?

Now that I think about it, I'm also reminded of the time (long ago) that a Game assistant in Harrow assured me that Bleem!DC would download straight from the internet and save to the DC. When I questioned this statement, pointing out that there is no HD in the DC, he said something along the lines of "They actually put some special memory in there, for stuff like this. It's kind of like a mini HD". I'm glad I only went in there to buy a magazine.

Funny story about this actually, one kid bought GTA Vice city, came back day later, saying it didn’t work, it was scratched really badly, as I took it out back to ask another person if it was ok to exchange, and generally laugh at this kid for being an arse, the other person took the game, dropped it on the floor, stepped on it and scratched it along the floor. Now the scratches weren’t just really bad, you could have used it as a cd rack, the scratches were that bad. I then gave the kid his game back, said we couldn’t do anything and he was on his way. Never did come back.

That is fucking awful. I think your attitude stinks.

One woman came in had just bought a ps2, came back moaned it was faulty because it was noisy. Turned it on, sounded like a normal ps2, but she still moaned. She told us she had it on its side, we told her this is not the best thing to do. But she still moaned saying but the manual says its ok, saying we were wrong basically. But everyone knows a sideways ps2 damages the discs. She did come back weeks later with a new disc that had that nasty circle scratch on it, caused by the ps2, she demanded a new disc. We told her what we said before and said its nothing to do with us, we just sell the ps2, we don’t make them.

I think the woman is in the right here and you treated her very badly.

The manual DOES say it's okay to put a PS2 on its side.

Yes. My time working evenings at Sainsbury's have made the the most polite, understanding customer ever.

There were times where a customer had come in to collect the CD they had reserved only for me to find that the person on the day shift had sold it to thier mate from the Deli. Meaning I had to go and explain to them why we didn't have thier CD that they had come all the way to get, and I'm the one that ends up looking like an idiot.

This is a typical bloke who has played EVERYTHING! and I mean everything. He'll come in and ask you what good games are out. 'Got that, yep and that, yawn completed that 4 years ago. Done that in 5 minutes, is shit, not as good as...etc etc' That’s all you'll hear, they'll then leave after wasting your time for half an hour and haven’t bought anything. What i want to know is where do they get all the money for these games from and the time to play them!

From working in a decent job, which you can do if you progress past treating customers like crap. Not impressed.

Also: please, please, learn the difference between "your" and "you're", and "there", "their" and "they're".

That's disgusting. The PS2 is shown in promotional material as being able to be stood on its side. Furthermore, there is an official, overpriced "stand" from Sony which lets you do that. Has it occured to you it's on its side in her house because she doesn't have space to have it flat? Is she a moron for assuming something she has bought should "work in the way it's intended and described"? Because the law says otherwise.

One bloke i worked with had his g/f cheat on him and dump him, he was badly hurt but still came to work. He was very open about being upset, to the staff at least and did show it to customers in his attitude and expressions, but still customers would treat him like he had killed a man and not care about his feelings or that he had had a hard day at work or that he just didnt care about their son scratching a ps2 game and wanting a refund.

I must remember to ask every shop assistant how their life is going and how they are feeling deep down inside before I dare ask for help.

Well being screamed and moaned at was no nice, if she was polite and listned to me she would have got a happier response, i told her the fans are generally noisy on ps2's, which is true. the manual also does say you can stand it on its side, but the amount of customers that came in saying their disc is scratched with a perfect circle is extreamly high, and its a well known fact that if the ps2 moves or vibrates while on end the laser can hit the disc causing a perfect scratch. Thus i was saving her from ruining her game discs.

And you may think what ive written is awful, but i have only written the truth, you also forget to notice the good bits about working in game, which i labeled clearly. As you have never worked in GAME before i'll ignore your thoughts on what i have written as you have no experience to base it off of. I was also told by the reginal manager and my other managers we cannot exchange machines unless they were faulty as there was a charge from Sony for faulty machines sent back to them, that were fine. The fan making a bit of noise is not a fault and thus our store would have been charged, a managed backed me up on that one.

Also Ste, what im saying is not to ask people if they are Okay, but you should see some people come ranting and raving and swearing in front of little kids for no reason, the person behind the till is there to do a job, they have to follow the rules, and they are the first line of contact where if a customer is annoyed for what ever reason, it'll be taken out on them, im sure people like haribo kart/laine have heard of the TRUE stories where staff have been threatened for a number of tiny reasons. There is no need for that and i find it duscusting people in this day and age act like that to people who have done no wrong, a person in a shop has their own problems, they dont need you shouting at them because your mate jimmy told you the gc is crap and the guy bought one from you and now wants his money back before even opening the box.

Not only do GAME employ liars, they also employ staff with great amounts of assumed knowledge. I didn't know that, and I'm pretty sure many others who know a bit about consoles.

'Great'.

My PS2 stands on it's side most of the time, and I've not noticed any kind of ill effects or scratched discs. Maybe you should have considered that hers might have been faulty? I'd be annoyed if I'd spent £200 on a machine that scratches the fuck out of my £40 a throw discs. Also, maybe the fan was louder than it should have been too - it'd be hard to tell the difference without having two next to each other in a soundproof environment.

The customer isn't always right, but they never deserved to be treated like shit, regardless of age, gender, bias or anything else.

Exactly, you didnt now that and now you do, if you did a google search you'd find hundreds of pages on it, thats why i told her because she was unlikely to know it, normally the people that do know about it had it happen to themselves, heir nice perfect game, scratch forever.

And Willei, your quiet right, i did actually take out the ps2 machine we have in the stock room for displaying games on a monitor and let her hear the fan for that compared to her own, that just made her shout more and more because she couldnt counter the argument.

Ps2's only scratch discs if they are on end on a surface that vibrates or has knocks, im sure everyones pulled their ps2 or knocked it while it was on using the controller or getting up to reach it, especially as when you turn it off the discs continues to spin for a few seconds after.

But thats why i told her not to stand it on end so it doesnt scratch the discs, i had one woman come in moaning that GAME branded psone memory cards didnt fit into their playstation, a quick show of a playstation, and said memory card showed that it fitted perfectly, thats when she admitted sheepishly she had been putting it into the controller port. Now she started with her high tone voice but i nicely showed her why she was wrong and she left rather quickly red faced. Thats why you should never get on your mighty horse, because there will be times when you are wrong and you look silly, and personally id rather not be shouted at because you made a silly mistake.
