Midway - Emmerich goes to war

Recommended Posts

A big bombastic America-Fuck-Yeah WWII film, by the looks of it. Buy a Midway and get a Pearl Harbour included. Supposedly a budget of $100m. Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Ed Skrein, Aaron Eckhart, Luke Evans, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Nick Jonas, Luke Kleintank, Keean Johnson, Etsushi Toyokawa, Tadanobu Asano and Jun Kunimura.

I thought that Bay's Pearl Harbour, while terrible in terms of characters and acting and the bland bits in between the shooting, had some pretty nifty FX porn for the time in the attack bits (no idea how that holds up as I only saw it on release). So I'm expecting similar from Emmerich!

I love the original (and all those WW2 films,  showing my age a bit) so kinda looking forward to this. At least, based on just watching a trailer without sound from about 15 feet away from a little TV.

I have no idea how something like that could be done justice with a £100m budget but for all its faults Pearl Harbours battle scenes were fucking incredible all those years ago, so there must be some kind of discount on the effects required for that kind of movie given how few get made these days.

It looks ok but I can’t see it bringing anything new to the genre, especially after how beautifully filmed the more subdued aerial action of Dunkirk was. Superb cast, massively wasted with serviceable action scenes confirmed!

Emmerich, Wilson and Woody means I'm in.

Even more interesting is the then and now thing for Lord of the rings that pops up after the trailer. What the heck has happened to Liv Tyler?

The FX look like a cutscene from that Pacific War game that came out on the 360 about 10 years back!!!!!!!

Still always had an interest in the Pacific war and Midway in particular so will give it a crack.

This is destined for a 20-30% score on rotten tomatoes or the like but will be nowhere  near as bad as it's made out to be. Still won't be good, mind.

Yeah so this is not great.

How do you fuck up a hugely interesting and decisive naval battle?

1 - Make it look like a video game.  The CGI gives no weight to the ships, planes whatsoever & there is literally too much going on at any one time in the battle scenes.

2 - Try to cover too much in one film, so that the final battle feels short changed.  I wanted to see a film about the Battle of Midway and not the 6 months between Pearl Harbour and Midway.  The desperate Japanese counter attack which very nearly succeeded in at least mitigating the scale of the Japanese defeat is shamefully brushed over.

3 - Totally ignore the Torpedo bombers which played a massive role in the battle, because I guess they thought dive bombing was more interesting.

4 - Barely touch on the tactics deployed by the opposing sides throughout the course of the battle.  As above the final battle feels desperately short changed to me.

On the plus side Woody Harrelson is great.

Being generous I would give 4/10 as this battle has always fascinated me,  but the old Charlton Heston film does a far better job on all fronts of covering it.

4 hours ago, Benny said:

Mark Kermode said the script of this was so bad it made Pearl Harbour look less bad in retrospect.

And he detests Michael Bay films with a deep, seething passion.

Well, I fucking loved it. Even Mrs sandman who is not a fan of war movies AT ALL, thought this was good.

my massive man crush on Wilson probably helped, but this rarely put a foot wrong IMHO. Exciting, interesting and well paced throughout.
