Desert Strike

I really loved this game, this was when EA games were known for always being good. The graphics really stand out still, watching the little people run around the landscape, making sure you didnt use all your ammo up meaning you'd fail the missions.

Even jungle strike and urban strike were good, especially urban strike where you had to protect the president or man a hovercraft. Very difficult games as well!

God I loved these games .Every one I played to death, and loved every unforgiving moment of them.

Future Cop LAPD,by the same team,is just superb as well.Played it through once again last year and it hasn't really aged that much.An update would be well worth my money.Shame there are no games currently which feel the same.

Best thing about Desert Strike: flying over the sea to save fuel :(

I tried to play this the other day on an old SNES and its funny, I couldn't aim for shit, I used to be well better I swear! All these spangly 3D games have killed my 2D skillz!

I had the Megadrive version, and my mate had the Snes version when it originally came out.

I don't know why,but I really had problems playing on the Snes one, even though I had completed my version fully.Just something about it didn't 'gell' for me.

Jungle Strike was a good laugh though, turning the sound up way too high and scaring the neighbours.I think they thought Apocalypse Now was actually happening, especially when I played Ride of the Valkyries on my stereo!

Oh the follies of youth :)

I almost picked this up in GS yesterday, but the box was a bit knackered, and I keep telling myself "You're going to get your Xbox chipped anyway: stop buying the actual games you fool!"

My favourite was Jungle Strike. There was that level round Washington I think, and you had to protect the presidents motorcade from terrorists. Brilliant, brilliant level.

What other versions of the game were there? I had Soviet Strike on my Saturn, but I can't think of any more besides the ones mentione din this thread.

The series of "Strike" games is as follows,

Desert Strike - Released just after the 1st Gulf War, people forget how controversial this was when it came out.

Jungle Strike - Bigger badder more varied sequel. More levels, vehicles and action. The end credits make intresting reading too as they credit all kinds of influecnces used in the game.

Urban Strike - Now you can get out of the helecopter and run round sections of the levels. Weaker generic sequel that might still apeal to fans of the series.

Soviet Strike - All new true 3d version for Saturn and PlayStation. Word is that its quite good.

Nuclear Strike - Playstation only sequel missed by many under a sea of PlayStation Software.

Was Desert Strike in the arcade? I remember a helicopter game where you sat on an elevated chair (you climbed a couple of steps to get into it) and it swivelled around as you moved the stick. It was good, but I can't remember if it was Desert Strike or not. I was only a wee young lad, you see.

No, that was er... super thunder blade. It wasn't desert strike.

No no, definitely not Super Thunder Blade. This game was definitely set in the desert, or the first level was anyway. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Desert Strike, now that I think about it. It scrolled up the screen, as opposed to being free roaming like Desert Strike.

Bah, forget it. It's not important.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'd just like to add that, my funniest memory of playing this game was this... One day, myself and my friend were on my mega drive. My brother wanted a go on Desert Strike, so, I let him on. He was on the first mission, doing ok. There was someone he needed to pick up into his apache. So, he's moving about slowly, with the ladder down, and, he can't pick the friendly up. After about 30 seconds of spinning, he just says: "f**k this!" and launches one of the larger missiles at the poor friendly. :)

Did anyone complete Nuclear Strike without cheating? I only ask because I couldn't and resorted to using infinite ammo and armour and watched in horror as enough ordnance to destroy a country was unleashed on me in the final bit - Shiva's Dagger, the world killing nuke you had mere moments to destroy, took around 2 - 2-and-a-half minutes of continuous machine gun fire, hydra rockets and hellfire missiles. Without the cheat, you'd be out of rockets/missiles in around 20 seconds, all the while you're getting shot to fuck from all directions. If any part of a game seemed impossible, that was it...

I wasn't able to buy many games for my Mega Drive at the time and for ages my 'collection' consisted of...

Dune: Battle for Arrakis

Sonic the Hedgehog

Gunstar Heroes

Desert Strike

Jungle Strike

I played the hell out of everyone of those games. Played them all again and again and again.

It's funny because these days I can buy any game I want and I can't think of anything I have have played and appreciated as much as the games above. I knew them inside anmd out.

It's funny how that happens. Now i have piles of games sat in my room and not enough time to do much but scratch the surface of them.
