Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Breath of the Wild 2) 12th May 2023

I'm not buying the idea of a whole new open world to explore underground. Nintendo themselves the use their own 'open air' term to refer to this new style of Zelda, which doesn't seem to fit with an entire world of underground cave networks. No sunset vistas, no paragliding off mountains, no day and night cycle, no towns or NPCs. I don't buy it at all. I think it's going to be a heavily modified version of the same Hyrule, unfortunately, with maybe a bunch of proper underground dungeons and new caves to explore. Or maybe previous posters are right and we take off on Hyrule Castle spaceship to explore a new planet entirely, or a more fleshed out Skyloft. Anything but Hyrule again, please.

This game doesn't have a title yet btw.  It probably not going to be called Breath of the Wild 2...

Probably not, although it references Breath of the Wild much more heavily than I was expecting so who knows? Super Mario Galaxy 2 was very surprising and unNintendo but they did that.

You know what? I'm not really that worried. It's likely to be fucking brilliant regardless.

My thoughts are this is the opening cut scene. Link and Zelda are investigating under the castle and awake something they shouldn’t. Castle flies off. They follow. Boom. New world.

Or they go to SPAAAAAACE!

And in space they discover these floating jellyfish-like parasitical creatures that drain the life energy of whatever they latch onto.

In other words the sequel to BotW and Metroid Prime 4 ARE THE SAME GAME!!!!!

Welp, here it is, from Aonuma himself. Same Hyrule, new story, new gameplay.

Quote

Direct sequels are rare in Zelda titles, but Aonuma saw something special about Breath of the Wild and wanted to create a new experience. "One of the reasons we wanted to create a continuation was because I wanted to revisit that Hyrule again and use that world again, while incorporating new gameplay and new story," he says.

Now I really am worried. Even if they shake the world up a lot, I don't see how it can come close to that sense of discovery and wonder BOTW delivered.

The utterly vile thought has just occurred to me that some of the BOTW team might have been spending some of the last couple of years making Link's fucking Awakening.

In any case, I do wonder if after the very long and presumably quite arduous development of BOTW, they didn't fancy devising a new world of that scope all over again, perhaps leaving that for Switch 2?

I wonder also if there might be a difference in opinion at this news between players who completed BOTW in a few dozen hours and still feel a sense of wonder and mystery when remembering the world, and players who combed every square inch of the place for every last Korok seed and feel a sense of slight tedium at the prospect of returning there for another few hundred hours.

I’m chilled if the world has moved on. Going to familiar places to see how they’ve changed would be great.

I think that would be lovely as DLC or an expansion. As a brand new mainline Zelda game? Not so much.

A reminder that monolithsoft was recently hiring for technical artists, programmers, planners, designers and management support to work on a new Zelda game. Maybe a big role in this game, whilst the main team works on something else?

I know it's a rom hack but reading all this I'm now thinking it could be a similar idea to parallel worlds, the link to the past remix. I'd be well up for a much grander version of that

Parallel universe is the best theory indeed, won't be surprised if this ends up being the case.

-Explains the purple Demise crap still existing.

-Link was Zelda's bodygaurd in the BotW cutscenes, that still works in a different timeline situation.

-Mr Bones: Twight Princess stabbed Dorfy? Probably not Wind Waker Dorf, he turned to stone.

Considering timeline placement was the biggest complaint to botw, wouldn't be surprised if Aonuma's thinking things.
