That could easily have been the third part of a licensing deal done years ago for that specific series of games.  If, originally, Capcom signed a deal to produce 3 Marvel games with access to a certain set of characters then they would still be able to use those rights within any time-frame set out.  Equally, at the time of Sony signing the deal allowing Insomniac to do their game, they would've been made aware of the existence of Capcom having those rights and would likely not have seen it as problematic, as noone would really see that as competition.  Maybe Capcom's deal has now expired, maybe they have the rights to do more, who knows.  But the existence of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 does not prove that Sony don't currently have the 'game rights' to Spiderman right now.

MUA3 was developed by Team Ninja and published by Nintendo, not Capcom, so probably needed a new license. Given the time frame it seems likely the deal was struck after PS4 Spider-Man was well into development, but I guess we'll never know for sure.

So anyone playing this weekends beta and care to share some thoughts

I dont know what everyone has been smoking, but, its quite the looker, are you basing it on the fact Spiderman is a Sony exclusive? Had been on it for the last 90 minutes or so, finished the intro and the first story mission.

I had been put off by some of the preview chat, but, na, I have been enjoying it. The different characters feel great, even Hulk (who has had a particular heavy slating) works when you get used to him.

No doubt people will pile in and say I am wrong, will I care, nope, not a jot, had me some fun.

Liked Ms Marvel and her moves, I hope Antman will be in there at some point too.

I've been watching some (compressed, admittedly) videos and it certainly doesn't look all that good. There's no real artistry going on, it's all quite bland and generic. The same as the gameplay, too. As was mentioned earlier in the thread, because of the need to balance everything I find it hard to see how each hero is going to feel particularly unique and they'll all fit within a fairly narrow range.

Not that I really care all that much, I'll possibly buy it when it's about £10. I'd much rather a PC version of Ultimate Alliance.

Fun jokes about the stunt doubles and comics vs cartoons and MCU aside, I think the game’s biggest problem is going to be the utter lack of charisma of the main characters. Hulk aside the only reason you can tell who they are is because they look a bit like the movie versions and you can piece it together that they’re the Avengers when they’re in a line-up. If the Marvel deal fell through they could’ve recycled the models in any sci-fi, espionage or fantasy games they had coming up. You look at them and your eyes just slide off.

When people say that it looks like a knock off, it’s not just that they don’t look like certain versions of the characters, it’s that it actively captures the aesthetic of something caught between a commercial desire to be recognisable and a legal obligation not to be.

I suppose you would need to try it to find out, watching videos is never going to nail the experience, there arent very many non generic looking games out there now surely, everything nicks a bit from everything else.

The bridge gives you a quick feel for everybodys moveset, to see it all moving on your TV is probably miles better than a youtube video.

I liked it and I suppose thats good enough for me, a lot of comments seem to be coming from people who only watched some videos, moaning they dont look like they do in the movies , the movies also dont look exactly like the comics (thank god, looking at you americas ass, that did not work on film) and, spidey being on PlayStation only.

Ms Marvel does not feel like hulk, thor, iron man, her moves appear to be a cross between Spiderman, Reed Richards and Antman.

If you can play the beta, its free (at some point over the next couple of weeks) then have a moan about it, yer weans/kids will love it if nothing else.

well, the characters do what you would expect their comic/movie counterparts to do, it isn't getting repurposed into a different game with different skins, so, its Avengers, just stuck between comics and the movies then.

I suppose I should be raging that the early Spiderman games didn't have Nicholas Hammond in them.

Stark still looks like Peter Sutcliffe.

I'm a bit unsure why people are surprised at the blandness. The characters have looked trash since Marvel vs Capcom 3 which was *checks notes* nearly ten years ago.

Is the Beta free yet? Figured I’d show my kids the trailer as that’s our new measure of quality. The older one got his phone out about 30 seconds in. His brother (who is more polite) said it was boring.

My younger son asked a lot of questions about the story, so I showed him that instead of the gameplay and he was pretty excited. He wanted clarification of whether he could just be black widow all the time. Watching it with him I enjoyed it way more :)

I think most were referring to the art style, not how detailed it is or how much shinies they've packed in. I certainly was. Of course that's entirely subjective, fair enough if you do like it. I've seen umpteen different designs for all of these characters over the decades and the ones in this game rank on the level of Rob Liefeld on a bad day for me. Imho and all that.

Jesus...it is fortunately nothing like Rob Liefeld on a bad day...I couldn't handle that either.

Apparently these are exclusive to Virgin Media in the UK.

These are supposed to be part of some deal with Intel.

I’d take everything Liefeld has designed over the years before the bland shit CD has knocked out for this. Even his Awesome Comics stuff!! The designs in this are worse that the Spoder-Man strips.

They are a bit boring but you can at least look at the design of the female characters and say it'd be plausible for them to have the anatomy of an actual woman. You can't say that for many of Liefelds interpretations of the female form.
