I'm definitely out. Don't get me wrong, that sounds indeed a lot better than the impression we got from the trailer, but I just can't stand time limits. That goes double when there's stealth involved, when I stalk NPC's you can find me sitting in the same corner for hours. That's totally just me though, and I get that. It even ruined Outer Wilds for me. It's a personal problem :(

I feel your pain as I have the very same issues. The anxiety of a time pressure pushes me into rushing everything and not really ever taking anything in or enjoying what I'm doing, immediately makes a game feel like some kind of job!

That said it reads like the mechanics have been perfectly deployed here and woven into the narrative so I'll look on longingly wishing I could alter my brain chemistry.

Outer Wilds? Does that have time limits?

How do you two get through life if you can't cope with the passage of time? :P

I like to take my time when exploring a world, don't like playing with a forced limit.

Oh! that is a shame I am like @Mr. Gerbik and hate time limits in games so will have to cross this off the list.

You should definitely give Outer Wilds a go, and It's probably not what you think. This isn't a spoiler but I'll use spoiler tags anyway in case anyone reading wants to go in completely blind. I'm just talking about mechanics:

Spoiler

Yes, the universe resets every twenty minutes, but you're rarely under any pressure as such. You'll usually end up exploring something new every time the universe resets, while stuff changes across the course of the twenty minutes. Figuring out what changes and when is part of the fun.

Also, every discovery you make is logged forever in your ship's computer, and that knowlege is all you ever need to carry across resets.

It's incredible, and in no way a time trial game. It's more of an adventure game where the passage of time is an integral part of the puzzles and plot.

Timeloop games actually give you infinite time to explore. Yes, at some point timing and racing against the clock comes into it, but you have infinite chances to prepare. Time is such an under-utilised dimension in games. I find games that make proper use of it (Dead Rising, Outer Wilds, Hitman) to be massively compelling.

Don't forget the grand daddy Majora's Mask. :)
I agree though. These are all fantastic games.

This is definitely the most appealing exclusive so far.

I thought it was now clarified as a timed exclusive and will eventually be on the XSX?

“Not trying to say too much, but there is a turning point in the game where the progression becomes even more different than a roguelike,” he teased. “You play that same day over and over, but you don't necessarily do the same things, you are not necessarily in the same places, you don't have the same goals.”

The Arkane team wanted to make sure that players didn’t feel restricted by the time loop itself, and Bakaba cautions that players don’t need to worry about feeling limited by Deathloop’s timeline.

“The one thing we wanted to make sure is that it doesn't mean that the player is literally on the clock in their moment-to-moment gameplay,” he noted. “If you want to play very deliberately, very slowly, and take your time, read every note, look at every painting, the game will not punish you for that.”

“It's got a lot of nice features with the haptics feedback, the active triggers. We are a first person game. We really value immersion a lot in our games,” he said. “Really feel the weapons in your hand, its reaction, how it reloads, how it reacts to reloading, etc... I think that players will enjoy those functionalities."

"When we were discussing the core ideas, the main pillars of the game, the time period was not there. And at some point I was like, imagine you have an isolated island. And if you want to create a huge contrast and a clash with something, it could be the time period instead of just sci-fi elements,” Mitton explained, noting the various inspirations for the world. “We call it the Saul Bass vibe. He did all the posters for The Shining, Vertigo. And you mix it together to get something that is really Arkane.”

The island is divided into several districts. By entering them at different times of the day, you see different events and routines. “Depending on where you are, different things happen,” Bakaba says. “Just exploring all the permutations of those districts through the day is something that's exciting to do. And then starts the experimentation: But what if I do this? What happens then? Can I prevent this character from dying? Oh, wait a minute, I killed that character, but he was digging a hole, what if I don't kill him and come back in the afternoon and then maybe this opens the passageway to something else. It is really about this clockwork; pushing a domino here, pushing a domino there, and then seeing the ripple effects.”

Bakaba said it’s a more freeform narrative, and while Arkane certainly has some new tools for how it’s telling Deathloop’s story, it also brings in its signature environmental storytelling that invites exploration to uncover Blackreef’s deeper mysteries. “I think it's the most player-driven narrative that we've done in a game until now,” he says.”

I'm right in thinking that the PS5 will suffer more if many launch window games are delayed, right, due to MS having Gamepass and a whole bunch of planned tech updates to existing games?

You can bet that Sony sell every PS5 they produce for launch. They upped their production because they know demand is high. For them, Spider-Man will be enough. Everything else is a bonus. I still think Demon's Souls will be a launch game though and that will be their big announcement when they'll talk PS5 again, whenever that may be.

I didn't realise this was an actual launch title – as opposed to "launch window", a term so capacious it's definitely been stretched to mean the first 12 months before – so the delayed release is pretty much in line with my expectations.

2021 will likely be pretty thin year when it comes to 'AAA' releases. We haven't really felt the effects of the pandemic on game production yet.

Gutted this isn't hitting XBox until 22. Absolutely love the studios games.

There's a chance that they could pull out of the Sony deal now MS own them. Doesn't seem very likely though, regardless of the contract penalty. Their marketing ducks are all in a row.
