Nah, only a very silly person would suggest that the game wasn't designed/balanced with Ashes in mind.   Anything that gets the win counts in these games, even cheese.  Make your own difficulty, etc.

it’s actually really fun to use the ashes too (unlike cheesing a boss). I have half a million of them. I really need to try some new ones.

For example, I have 6 Rune Arc things, have no idea what they do bur imagine they are fairly useful tool?

Aaah man, these things are obtuse.  But the text is there in the item description.

You know when you beat Godrick? He gave you a rune.  Find it in your inventory and read the description.  There's a little detour you can take to unlock it's power!

Well, I say that, you'll unlock the ability to EQUIP it.  The rune arcs you mention will activate its power.  Godrick's one is worth it, if I recall correctly..

Spoiler

Boosts all stats by 5 points.  Basically 40 free level ups until you die.

Hesitation is defeat… and I’m still standing whilst Rennala is left cradling her massive unhatched kinder egg toy talking in riddles.

I can’t upload the clip but her casting a fucking dragon as I went in for the kill and the lock on switching to the dragons leg was a special moment. Actually summed up the entire boss fight really well, just pure nonsense.

Now back to the brilliance.

Eh… I have no idea where to go now

I get games having mystery and little secrets to uncover but this kind of thing is just bullshit. I don’t want to be checking a guide every 20 minutes to find out what kinda essential stuff I’ve completely missed.

Some of its obtuse but a lot of it is neglect for the gamers experience.

It’s fun to discover things though. I did have a sense of achievement even figuring that out. And gives you things to chat about for example in this channel. I think this is part of the experience. I would not change that.

Granted for those that have played other soul games it might be easier because it is basically how humanity worked.

I think the concept of going somewhere else to charge the boss rune atop a remote tower is a fucking brilliant piece of design. That feeling of going up with your trophy

to get it sanctified is a dopamine trip like no other. Just waiting on that lift with a fucking smile on your face basking in the bollocking you just have that cunt.

Dude I literally worked that out myself by reading the information in the game.  I get people find it frustrating but I loved feeling smart for figuring that out on my own!

Yeah I remember being told about it, but it was quickly forgotten as something else new was given to me and then I found a different area and then there was another NPC and then and then.

The world is absolutely saturated with stuff like that making it very difficult to tell what is very important and what is some mad person rambling about shite that means nothing. I totally get that a huge part of the experience is about discovery, but when its all presented to you in the same way and then contained in a monstrous inventory it’s difficult to know (without help) what to do with things or where to go.

It’s the point I made earlier about From hitting the balance between the ambitious scale of Elden Ring and the focused perfection of Sekiro. They get that balance nailed and they will have basically won game development.

I’ve got a ton of rune arcs and even after reading these last few posts I’m still none the wiser in what I’m supposed to do with them or what they’re for.

@robdood inspired me to go back and sort that broken Great Rune I got after beating Godric so I've done that. Get to the Divine Tower of Limgrave, fix the Great Rune, equip it then every time you use a rune arc you will activate the Great Runes ability. I've no idea how long the effect lasts but I'm buffed to fuck right now with nobody to fight :)

You can only equip the Great Rune at a site of grace and I assume change them there too? What I think is lovely is that you get a Great Rune from Ranella but it seems to just sit in the inventory with you not being able to equip it, so that contradicts everything the game has just told me about Great Runes  why is it always madness?!

I need to get back with it to have a play around.

How are you finding it after Sekiro anyway? I followed your adventures in the Sekiro thread and was happy when you decided to jump straight into this. For me, as much as I love the combat in Sekiro, the sheer scale and amount of adventures there are to be had in Elden Ring make it the winner.

Calm down Carlitos. The effect will pass when you die. 😀 Which is somehow faster when you are beefed up and overconfident. Put those ambitions to rest.

I really miss Sekiro. It has changed the landscape in what can be achieved in action games for me, like Death Stranding before it did for open worlds. For me to still be playing Elden Ring after my feelings toward Souls games is an achievement in itself but I’m absolutely loving every time I play it.

Gameplay wise nothing in Elden Ring hits the level of challenge and then satisfaction that Sekiro provided. ER is a colossal and captivating game, but it lacks the perfectly measured and adrenaline inducing excitement that Sekiro has.

Playing Sekiro is like learning to play the guitar like a god and then learning several amazing songs to play on it. Elden Ring is like learning how to play every instrument in a band fairly well and knowing loads of songs to play at that level. I’d rather be a god :)

So it doesn’t time out and it’s only limitation really is how many rune arcs you have to fuel it? Nice.

Different Runes grant different abilities. Rennala's Rune is permanent and allows you to be "reborn"

Spoiler

It unlocks the ability to re-spec your character when you have the correct consumable. These are limited and rare but I had loads left at the end of my run(s)

So you don’t actually equip it, but it works automatically when you pick up something else? What’s the point of the Rune if it’s useless without the consumable? Surely it should just be a case of these consumables only working at a certain point in the game without the need for the Rune? Feels like a Rune for Runes sake that. Yet more madness :)

There are 8 Great Runes.

6 of them can be equipped at a SoG and give an active stat boost when a Rune Arc is consumed that lasts until you either die, teleport or rest. The stat boost depends on which Great Rune is equipped and only 1 of these can be equipped at any time.

One Great Rune is unique as it is passive and is the only one that you don't equip. Instead you take a Larval Tear to Rennala and she will allow you to re-spec. This does not work automatically. You have to "spend" the consumable.

There is a reason but you'll have to read into the Lore as to why this is :)

The 8th is a multi-player only one that you'll probably never use.

I don’t think you lose the rune buff if you rest or teleport. But maybe I have just died every time?

You could be right. I only ended up using Rune Arcs against EB so I died every time lol. Will test out later when I get around to beating Godrick

I am thinking of picking up this game. Now that I am a proud Series X owner which version should I go for?

I can choose Series, Ps4 or PS5.

I have it on ps5 and pc and have to say I find the bumper click on the Xbox controller a little bit better in terms of feedback that the action was queued. I think performance is a bit bad in all versions.

Buy the PS4 version and play it on PS5 - plays incredibly smoothly at 60fps. You can upgrade to the PS5 version for free from it, but after trying it, I went straight back to PS4 version.

It’s almost like they had all the ideas. I wonder how they can one up this for Elden ring two. For this fight I saw a third boss appear and nearly crapped myself. Then I realised who I had really been fighting the entire time. Wonderful.

Yeah that's one of my faves!!

I really don't want them to make an Elden Ring 2.  Something new and different(ish) again please.

I'd basically like a spiritual successor to Sekiro, with a few more weapons, no levelling / stats and a cool world to explore/get killed in.   But with the visual design of Bloodborne on new gen machines.  Oh boy.

Just watching that video, You know if you press (spam) R2 straight after after doing the bloodhound finesse attack with the bloodhound fang you will do a follow up step  attack . Maybe you were doing it , I just couldn’t make it out

Yes I do that often. It’s probably my favourite attack of the game. Because you can blink through their attack if you time it right. I am basically at a point where I am just desperately trying to use something else but when something is difficult I just end up back on the same weapon.

I wish whoever did the demon souls remake would have a go at original bloodborne
