I had evidence of how Elden Ring has crossed over into the mainstream (well, mainstream for games, anyway) the other day at a barbecue. A mate of mine who plays a lot of games was there. He had tried Demon's Souls back on the PS3 but bounced off it, so he hadn't played any From games since. But after hearing the fuss about ER, he gave it a go and now it's one of his top 3 games of all time.

I think I saw a televised advert for it during tea time not too long ago on one of the "main" channels (BBC, ITV)? I'm used to Switch game ads on telly but that was unexpected...

I wonder what the sales figures are now. I know they announced sales of over 12m after it had been out for a couple of weeks, but how many has it sold now? Are From an AAA studio now?

I've noticed it too. Currently in the middle of a home restoration and the tradesmen who clocked my Series X have all struck up a chat about games, all of them are playing Elden Ring or are planning to. That wouldn't have been the case with Bloodborne or Dark Souls. Elden Ring has taken FROM overground in a big way. Must feel amazing for them.

Defeated Radhan last night, the proper way using summons. Absolutely amazing boss fight. From the very start it's this giant uphill struggle with no room for waiting, but seeing your band of merry summons rush him whilst you flee from arrows on horseback is something to behold. Then the fight, getting the upperhand, only for everyone to die, proper eye of the storm quietness, giant screaming metoer boss attack (like a FF summon) which killed me once, then getting your army back together for one last push. The best gimmick fight.

Very different to last time, where I swords and boarded him one v one.

edit- and that's ignoring the build up, the music, the silent castle, the fmv. Truly the end boss of the first act.

Slight Derail Folks -

Following up on the earlier chat about what game to move onto after Elden Ring - may I present Tunic.  OMG it's soooo good!   If you like Elden Ring you might just like the cut of Tunic's jib.

As you were!

Looks Zelda-esque and not in a bad way. Thread here for anyone else interested in the game:

Melina is so unbelievably hard!
there’s apparently a bug in the latest update that means she regens health on hitting any cooperator and not just the host!

Not sure if this is an actual bug or a real change but holy cow!

She's always healed when hitting anyone even if it's blocked. The bug people were claiming was that she was healing whilst missing her hits but that seems to be a latency based thing that cooperators sometimes see, on the hosts side she is hitting them, on the cooperators side they aren't getting hit due to bad connections so it looks like she is healing for no hits. Yeah she's extremely hard, good luck!

Ah I see!
yes, she’s an absolute bastard of a boss, and maybe best dealt with via ranged attacks 😕

I almost got her the very first time too lol 😂

Well I'm done! Got to the Haligtree last night and was also half way through CFA so I just kept ploughing on until I'd finished it. It took a good few hours but I've always used my mimic summons so as not to find the bosses too frustrating and most of them went down on 2nd attempt - the final 2 I did first time, but again, only with my faithful mimic.

Can't quite put into words how utterly superb this is - a game that lasted me a joyous 104 hours (and still I didn't want it to end) is a very special one indeed. I can't really think of any dips in quality, or criticisms it was just absolutely stunning throughout. I think I finished most of the side quests save the dung eater one as I never found the door his key unlocks (I did defeat the sewer boss though I was probably close), and the gold mask guy.

Not much else to say except, this comfortably sits above Resident Evil 4 now as "best game of all time" on my list - there's not a shred of doubt about it. It's a masterpiece.

Now I'm struggling to muster any enthusiasm for anything else so the options are: Returnal (because I still haven't played it) or a new build on this.

112 hours in and been using Bloodhound Fang almost exclusively and only just realised I’ve only been using half of the charged attack. You can follow up the LT with an RT and it does an invisible dash and uppercut for double the damage! What the fuck? What a dickhead.

Oh wow that bug where the boss dies if it has a negative status proc'd at the end of phase 1 it dies immediately at the start of phase 2 is pretty shit! I just deleted the fire giant for someone by making it suffer from rot.

That's what happened to me then. Shame, I was looking forward to beating him properly.

Pursuing the Sellen quests while I'm in a huff about Commander Niall and she sent me to Sellia to look for a wizard. Spent over an hour unlocking all of the seals in the town and killing everything in the graveyard, to no avail.

Ended up having to check a wiki to discover that I needed to run behind a gravestone and whack an otherwise indistinguishable cliff face to dispel an illusory wall, revealing the cave he's hiding in. Then I got killed by the bosses. Cheers, FROM. :hat:

Oh boy, I might drop my summon sign down there tonight to help a few people out in that case. Gotta get my cosplay on again.

EDIT: actually yeah that's always been the case... I got excited at the thought she'd been made harder

Once I beat her I actually did my bit and helped out others for the rest of the evening. Not once were we successful 😂

To be fair, there's a battle mage right near it and in my playthrough one of us revealed it by accident while duking it out, which I thought was pretty cool. Then I got killed by the bosses.

Perhaps I'm overlevelled but that guy went down in a couple of hits, so it was barely a fight. I was expecting him to drop something relevant, then I ran around checking graves.

The wall itself was also under the shade of the nearby tree. Maybe I've just lost my patience for riding around whacking everything in open worlds.

Is the 'chortlesome japes' in the topic title a reference to something?

It makes me cringe every time I read it. Reminds of the type of guy that says 'I'll have a pint of your finest ale please barkeep!'
