Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion Announced

I had a few quests going on at the same time and as I inadvertently reached the capital last night decided to backtrack a bit and go to volcano manor. So far so good until the next bit is to go somewhere off to the east of the capital - do I need to finish that area/boss before I can continue or is there a path around?

I don’t want to be hunting for something that doesn’t exist if I can help it…

Nah, you're even told where to go by the grace lights and there's nothing too obtuse on the critical path. The only major missable thing is summon upgrading, which could be missed easily if you didn't know about talking to NPCs over and over until their lines run out. Without it the end of the game would be harder, although still far from 'neigh impossible'.

I haven't used any guides of any sort, though I guess it is easier if you've played a fromsoft game before and know the kinds of things they expected you to do or figure out.

I think the bit you're talking about requires you to beat the boss in the heart of the capital first.

Spoiler

There's a big door at one end of the main "road" in the lower part of the capital that you can only open after doing the boss.

Oh and actually Roderika just turns up at the hold even if you don't talk to her exhaustively. Would be a bit harsh for the newbs to miss out on such an aid.

After sticking 30 hours into this and just reaching the capital, which is a lot for me (including playing in the morning, before work a few times), I think I might be done with this.

I loved the Limgrave area so much, and the two legacy dungeons, but finding it hard to muster any enthusiasm for any more of the game. I think mainly because although I like the combat, I don’t love it, and secondly the world in general is just so bleak and lonely. Just the soundtrack puts me on edge. I wish there were some lovely friendly towns or NPCs somewhere; and that the game was packaged in a more tonally friendly way, although I guess this might not exactly gel with the gameplay.

idk maybe I will come back to it, and I definitely enjoyed it much more than any other FROM game I have played.

I’m afraid to say I’m back on my bullshit. Currently trying to take the Castle in South Caelid.

Looks like meats back on the menu boys!

Haha was literally just coming to post "what an fanny the fire giant is" 😆

What level are your weapons? Having access to horsey makes it fairly straightforward. Just don't get greedy and learn when to run away (ie always run away)

+20 and +19. Nearly got him. Can get him to phase 2 without issue then summon my mimic and have nearly gotten him last two attempts.

He's still a prick.

Rennala is actually...

sat around the corner when Sellen is in the middle of the room. She never went away or died.

Spoiler

Oh Christ then you'd better tell Reddit, it seems people are really baffled by this unnecessarily then

So she's just languishing in defeat basically. Until Sellen has a mishap.

Max level, and I know I can do it, just annoyed at myself for stupid mistakes really. He's still a Fiery twat though.

Same here. I very specifically wanted to see what I could find with my own previous From experience and investigative powers.

Quite a lot it turns out!

I feel like I've experienced a large part of it, barring a few NPC quests.

Spoiler

Even before the defeat, she is pretty much useless. She has been languishing since Radagon left her, if you note in the fight she just flops to the group and does fuck all bar an AOE before rising back in her bubble. The actual fight you have with her in the second phase isn't even her, its just illusion magic set up by Ranni. Renala is just chilling with her egg the whole time you are in the fight.

In same tradition...Elden Ring? Completed it mate. Final battle below with Malenia thrown in, for anyone interested in how bad I am at playing. :D

Spoiler

Now to await the hundred hours of Vaati content so I can know what actually happened.

I very much enjoyed the rolling during homing missile spam. I can practically hear you going "ohshitohshitohshitohshit!"

Yeah, pretty much. Feels like pure luck to get out alive. The final moments without the mimic are pure panic stations. I needed about two more hits and was expecting it to pull some huge bullshit move out of the bag at any moment.

The point at 1:12 against

Spoiler

Radagon is bullshit right? I was sure you could jump his stompy AOE moves.

Starting area

Spoiler

Tree Sentinel

down and out! Easiest enemy in the game 😆

I could not have imagined that 48 hours ago.  This game man!

Also top tip - if you find yourself wondering what to do sometimes you can return to the starting area NPC and they will give you hints. Even if they are not there...

Saw it happen! A player in your group is a lord. Nice!

And finished. I mean, not finished-finished obviously, I could keep playing this for months if I wanted to. But the final boss is dead.

Carian Retaliation with Wraith Calling Bell is fucking busted and I take great pleasure in using it to put my thumb on the scales before its inevitable nerf.

My experiences so far.

  • Meet skeletons in training dungeon. Die (only once, because I disabled m'shield and kept aiming my bow).
  • Meet bats outside. Die.
  • Meet wolves in cave. Die.
  • Meet Imps in dungeon. Die.
  • Meet guy in Santa hat selling stuff. Survive.
  • Get to castle pointed to by pixie dust supposedly guiding my way. Something large jumps on my head and squashes me to death...

I did manage to kill most of the zombie types and guards outside...

I feel like in the spirit of helping out those just starting out I have a quick tip to share:

When you first leave the training area and:

Spoiler

chat to the guy outside in the open, you may notice a large knight on horseback wandering around. This is an aggressive enemy that can be very dangerous. However, if you want a really useful item which will make things much more manageable in the next section, what you need to do is walk up to the end of the path where the knight is trotting to, and do the Warm Welcome gesture.

Make sure to time the Warm Welcome gesture right and wait until you receive the item from the knight.
